Diesel fumes can cause cancer

Posted:

The World Health Organization recently reported that diesel fumes cause cancer. Why are we acknowledging now, in 2012, something that could easily have been predicted decades ago? Part of the problem is our gridlocked political system which prevents meaningful change and discussion.

Independent voters and those not locked into the two parties can play a major role in reforming health care. This also ties into the economic system as a whole.

Cancer is big business. Look at the numbers. 1.6 million Americans are expected to be diagnosed with cancer in 2012. Let’s say, just as a ballpark guesstimate, that $100,000 changes hands as each cancer patient goes through the system. That’s $160 billion a year.

But there’s another important economic factor at work here. Look at the tobacco companies. If somebody figures out that a particular product causes cancer and can prove it, then billions of dollars can change hands yet again in lawsuits…

Corporations too often can have two agendas to consider. Try to corner some of the cash cow by selling cancer drugs, scans, prevention, insurance etc and at the same time, try to minimize and conceal the extent to which products sold by corporations cause cancer.

That’s the part they don’t want you to think about. No one really knows what causes a specific case cancer. Even if general epidemiological trends have been charted, no one can say for sure exactly what causes any particular individual to get cancer, since we all are exposed to hundreds of different carcinogens every day, and even if the negative effects of one particular chemical have been proven, no one has the slightest idea what happens synergistically when a person ingests many different toxic chemicals at once. That last fact brings a lot of comfort to corporations because it means they are not liable – yet.

Big business sold you the carcinogens and the expensive scanner that gave you your diagnosis plus meds that cost $40,000 a month. Plus, they can prove in court – because they can afford better lawyers — that your tumor was not caused by exhaust fumes.

For fifty years we have been taught to blame the victim. I’m told I have a 44% chance of getting cancer in my lifetime. (And that must be true because I was diagnosed with kidney cancer in 2009.) 577,000 Americans will die from cancer in 2012. One in four deaths in America is from cancer. But we blame the victims. They smoked too much, they drank too much, and they spent too much time out in the sun. It couldn’t have been caused by pollution or by toxic chemicals in the environment, or by radiation from nuclear weapons and nuclear power, or by toxic consumer products. If patients knew what was killing them, they might sue or demand major changes in the entire medical system.

Euro 2012: Italy prepare to face reigning champions

Posted:

Italian coach Cesare Prandelli says his team face the best side in the world when they take on reigning European and World champions Spain in Sunday s (July 1) Euro 2012 final in Kiev.

Speaking to journalists in Kiev s Olympic Stadium, Prandelli said he and his team were determined to beat the Spanish.

"Spain are the best side in the world. They ve show that over the last few years because they ve always played their own way, stayed true to their football philosophy and we have always said they are the side to beat," he said.

But Prandelli dismissed complaints that Spain have become boring to watch with their methods of controlling possession and constant short passing moves.

"I don t think it s a case of them being boring. It s the fear of seeing the same side always winning and over the last few years, Spain always seemed to come out on top so they re not boring in any shape or form," he said,

Spain are seeking to cement their place among soccer s great teams with a third major title after victory in the World Cup in South Africa and the last European finals in Austria and Switzerland four years ago.

Italy, who last won the tournament in 1968, by contrast have confounded expectations with positive, dynamic play and a potent attack led by the temperamental talent of Mario Balotelli.

A double from the 21-year old striker saw them upset a much-fancied young Germany side in the semi-finals in Warsaw on Thursday (June 28) and was a stark contrast to Spain s victory on penalties over Portugal on Wednesday (June 27) after a dull 0-0 draw.

"Mario has done very well this far because first and foremost he s got great natural talent and this is a great starting point for him," said Italian goalkeeper and captain Gianluigi Buffon.

"He s come into a squad where there are a lot of star players, not only in footballing terms but also stars in general. He s also come in and he s worked with a coach like ours, who in a number of different ways, managed to get the best out of Mario Balotelli so I think he deserves the most credit for this because he s really worked hard and he s wanted to succeed and credit should also go to the rest of the squad."

The teams already met in the group stage of the tournament with the game ending 1-1.

Prandelli also announced that the team had received a letter of encouragement from Italian President Giorgio Napolitano, and that the squad would meet with him in Rome on Monday (July 2).

"Quite honestly I felt very emotional when I read the letter. We felt his presence here, we felt just how close he is to us at this time, just like the first time he came to watch us play against Spain in the first game of the tournament so he s given us a lot of confidence and not a lot of people had a lot of faith in the team at this time. I felt a lot of emotions," Prandelli said.

Europe's bold rescue plan still awaiting details

Posted:

Europe s leaders surprised skeptics with a bold plan to pump cash into troubled banks, reduce borrowing costs for Italy and Spain and stop forcing austerity on every government that needs aid.

Now their finance ministers have a week and a half to work out a lot of the details, and investors will be paying close attention. Financial markets liked the broad outlines of the plans that emerged Friday from a meeting of the leaders of the 27 European Union countries.

Markets roared their approval after the EU leaders declared they would:

Centralize regulation of European banks and, if necessary, bail them out directly, instead of funneling loans through governments that already have too much debt.

Ease borrowing costs on Italy and Spain, the euro region s third- and fourth-largest economies. Stop mandating painful budget cuts to every country in need of emergency financial aid.

Tie their budgets, currency and governments more tightly. The decisions made at the EU summit in Brussels won t end the crisis that has gripped Europe for nearly three years. Plenty of questions remain about how the bank bailouts would work, whether there s enough money committed to rescue banks and governments and whether impoverished, indebted

But for EU leaders who have consistently underwhelmed their exasperated publics and nervous financial markets, Friday s efforts marked a breakthrough.

The prime minister of Ireland one of the five eurozone countries that have required emergency funds said the plans marked a "seismic shift in European policy." British Prime Minister David Cameron said that "for the first time in some time we have actually seen steps ... to get ahead of the game."

There was an immediate sign that Europe s latest plan was easing fear in financial markets: The cost for the troubled government of Spain to borrow fell dramatically. The interest rate, or yield, on the country s 10-year bonds fell by more than half a percentage point, to 6.34 percent.

The Dow Jones industrial average recorded its second-biggest gain of the year, and stocks advanced even further in Europe
in strong and weak countries alike. The benchmark stock index in Germany rose 4.3 percent, by far its best performance this year. Germany has the biggest economy in Europe, and a warm reaction there was a crucial sign of approval for the plan. Prices for oil and other commodities shot higher, another sign that the plan may remove a big barrier to a healthier economy.

Review: Mere Dard Ko Jo Zuban Miley: Ep: 2
Jun 30th 2012, 21:30

I was completely blown away by the first episode of MDKJZM and I just could not wait for this second episode to go on air. The anticipation and the expectations from this episode were numerous and after watching today's episode, I can say with all certainty that MDKJZM is not going to be disappointing its viewers anytime soon. The Bushra Ansari-Adnan ahmed duo seems to be the perfect combination, add to that the name of MD productions and you have a masterpiece….story telling at its best that flows so harmoniously you feel refreshed and rewarded.

First of all it is great to see subtitles to make the viewers understand whatever communication Urooj has with his parents etc that was the only thing that was missing in the last episode. Today's episode gave us further insight into the relationship between Rehmat and Ahmed Ali. The relationship between the two friends and their conversations are so deep and moving. The chemistry between Khalid Anam and Behroze Sabzwari and the background score reminds me of the golden period of PTV plays. I really appreciate how the parents are being educated through this play and the fact being put forward that love is what makes the world go round. The recurring references to Ahmed Ali's abusive father and how it affected his life and personality and the way both these parents treat their children subtlety puts a very important message forward. It is great to see for a change a play that addresses problems faced by children who are abused in their childhood and how the memories haunt them all their lives…great job guys. The scene at the lunch table where Amina refers to Junaid as ghar damaad and the reaction she got from everyone was very nicely done. It was not what she said that was funny but the reaction that followed was hilarious. We found out today that Junaid is Shamim's younger sister's son and he was 'engaged' to Arifa in childhood. His parents passed away when he was little and since then he is been living with his khala.

Although Rehman threatens Pervaiz (his employee) of dire consequences if his son tried to forge his signatures again but that does not stop him from making plans to get his hands on Rehman's money and Kamran (Rehman's brother in law) is equally involved in all these misdoings. Razia tries her best to manipulate her sister to get a wholesome amount out of her but Zakia is wise enough not to fall for it and does not even bother asking her husband. Ahmed Ali and family visit Rehman and Rehman puts forward the idea of running a joint business in Hyderabad with the intention of helping his friend out. Urooj is doing a great job of being the son who has it all except just one disability, for a first timer Shehryaar Munawar is doing an outstanding job, I am sure he is going to win the hearts of many. Sarwat Gillani is simply rocking as Amina, she has managed to bring a smile on my face every time she cracked a joke, and this has to be her most memorable performance so far because making people laugh in an otherwise serious play is a tough job. I do not want her character getting serious anytime soon because I have not enjoyed a comic character the way I am enjoying this one in a long time. The fact that Bushra Ansari (the writer) was at the set to monitor everything reflects in Sarwat's acting and everything else. Adnan Ahmed has proved yet again that his story telling is spot on.

The chemistry between Mohib Mirza and Alishba Yusuf is remarkable. In fact the chemistry between all the actors is just awesome. All the characters are well-etched and the story has a lot to say and convey. I enjoyed every moment of today's episode and for those people out there who have not been following this show I highly recommend it.

2 prisoners killed, 1 injured in firing at Lahore Sessions Court

LAHORE: Two prisoners were killed and another was injured in a firing incident and standoff with the police at the Sessions Court in Lahore on Saturday, Express News reported.

According to Express News, a prisoner identified as Azam had shot Shafqat inside the temporary lockup of the Sessions Court. A standoff between Azam and the police lasted for an hour before he was also shot inside the temporary lockup.

Another prisoner was injured as a result of the firing.

A police official said that Azam had arrived today from a jail in Sahiwal for a hearing and Shafqat had come from Township. Both men had earlier served their sentences together and had gotten into a fight, he said.

Zaka Ashraf rejects Salman Butt's innocence claims

LAHORE: Pakistan cricket chief Zaka Ashraf Saturday rejected spot-fixing convict Salman Butt’s claims of innocence, saying the former captain was just expressing his personal views.

The 27-year-old ex-Pakistan captain, found guilty in a spot-fixing scandal that rocked the sport, Friday called for an open trial in his home country, saying justice was not done in the case leading to his ban and jail time.

“Whatever denial Butt is giving now, it is his personal view,” Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Ashraf said at Lahore airport after returning from the International Cricket Council annual conference in Kuala Lumpur.

“Butt was convicted in a UK court so the matter was related to the UK.”

The cricketer was found guilty by both the game’s governing body and a British court of receiving money in return for orchestrating deliberate no-balls during the Lord’s Test against England in 2010.

The bowlers Mohammed Amir and Mohammad Asif were also charged relating to deliberate no-balls they bowled but that were allegedly contrived by Butt in association with agent Mazhar Majeed, also sentenced to 32 months in jail.

The deal was organised by Majeed and an undercover reporter for the now defunct News of the World, in a sting operation which exposed corruption in international cricket.

“If the chief justice of Pakistan’s Supreme Court decides to take up the matter it is up to him, but the PCB has no link and no role in all this,” said Ashraf, who took over in October, a month before the players were sentenced.

Butt was the last of the three players released from prison last week after serving less than a quarter of his 30-month sentence.

All three players were banned for a minimum of five years by the International Cricket Council (ICC).

The trio has a right to appeal against the ICC ruling, and while Amir, who pleaded guilty during the trial, has decided not to appeal, Butt and Asif have hinted they may challenge the bans.

Hafeez ton ruins Sri Lanka's gamble

COLOMBO: Mohammad Hafeez roared back to form with an unbeaten century as Pakistan made Sri Lanka pay for a failed gamble in the second Test in Colombo on Saturday.

Pakistan, trailing 1-0 in the three-match series, took advantage of Sri Lankan captain Mahela Jayawardene’s surprise decision to field first on a good batting track at the Sinhalese Sports Club.

Hafeez was unbeaten on 105 following a fluent 65 from fellow-opener Taufeeq Umar as Pakistan went to tea on the opening day at a promising 217 for one.

It was Hafeez’s fifth Test century and the first after 10 innings since making 143 against Bangladesh in Chittagong in December last year.

The Pakistan vice-captain put on 78 for the first wicket with Taufeeq and 139 so far for the second with Azhar Ali, who was unbeaten on 45 at the break.

Hafeez earned a lucky break just before tea when he was caught down the leg-side by wicket-keeper Prasanna Jayawardene, but television replays confirmed Angelo Mathews had sent down a no-ball.

The century helped Hafeez overcome the disappointment of losing the opening encounter in Galle by 209 runs, where he led Pakistan in the absence of the banned Misbahul Haq.

Hafeez took time to settle down, making only 20 till lunch, before opening out after the break with attractive strokeplay on both sides of the wicket.

He had made only 12 when Taufeeq raced to his 14th Test half-century in the 18th over with two successive boundaries off Mathews.

Taufeeq fell just when he had mastered the Sri Lankan attack, edging an intended cut off Mathews to the wicket-keeper.

Hafeez began the post-lunch session by sweeping left-arm spinner Rangana Herath for two fours to bring up Pakistan’s 100 and then drove Nuwan Kulasekara to the point fence to reach his eighth half-century.

Azhar was content to play second fiddle at the other end as the second-wicket pair laid the foundation for a big first innings total.

Misbah returned to lead Pakistan after missing the Galle Test due to a one-match ban for slow over-rates. Middle-order batsman Mohammad Ayub was dropped to accommodate the skipper.

But the tourists were without frontline seamer Umar Gul, who was ruled out with an ankle injury. He was replaced by fast bowler Aizaz Cheema.

Sri Lanka retained the same side that won the first Test to lead the three-match series.

3 blasts kill 8 in central Iraq

Three bombs planted on motorcycles went off in quick succession near a market and police station in central Iraqi town Friday, killing at least eight people and wounding dozens more, officials said.

The blasts in Balad, located some 80 kilometers (50) miles north of Baghdad, were the latest in a wave of bombings and shootings has made June one of the deadliest months in Iraq since the last U.S. troops pulled out of the country in December.

Police said the bombs, which were hidden on motorbikes and went off within minutes of each other, also wounded at least 38 people.

"We were expecting this, because the terrorists want to ignite sedition among the Iraqi people," said Shiite cleric Murtada Faraj, 49, who was at Balad hospital caring for his three wounded nephews. Faraj said he had been about to leave the market when the explosions hit.

"Our town is Shiite, but it is surrounded by areas controlled by terrorists," he said.

Balad is a predominantly Shiite town in the majority Sunni province of Salahuddin. Shiites are a prime target of al-Qaida s offshoot in Iraq, which claimed responsibility earlier this month for attacks that killed 72 Shiite pilgrims headed to an annual religious ceremony in Baghdad.

Earlier Friday, gunmen in eastern Diyala province fatally shot four members of a local Sunni security militia know as Awakening Councils, which joined forces with the U.S. military to fight al-Qaida at the height of the insurgency. They are another frequent target for insurgents.

At least 220 people have been killed in June in a surge of bloodshed that officials and experts fear is part of insurgents efforts to reignite widespread violence along sectarian lines.
