Pakistan welcomes India's invitation to compete Twenty20

Posted:

Pakistan on Saturday welcomed India s invitation to compete in the Champions League Twenty20 tournament this year, saying it could lead to a "revival of Indo-Pak cricketing ties."

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), which met earlier in the day in Chennai, approved Pakistan s participation in the tournament which features leading domestic Twenty20 teams from around the world.

"We feel it s a significant and positive development," Pakistan Cricket Board chief operating officer, Subhan Ahmed, told AFP. "We had been in touch with the BCCI over the participation of a Pakistan team and hope that this step could lead to a revival of Indo-Pak cricketing ties." The news was also welcomed by Shoaib Malik, captain of Pakistan s Twenty20 champions Sialkot Stallions, who told AFP: "It s great news and I am happy to hear this."

"We eat the same food and wear same clothes and when we play cricket people of both countries come closer," he said. The invite to the tournament, to be held in October in India, came a month after Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari urged Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to consider reviving cricket ties, during a private visit to New Delhi.

The Sialkot Stallions were meant to compete in the inaugural Champions League in 2009 but the plan fell through after the 2008 terror attacks in Mumbai, blamed on Pakistan-based militants, strained relations.

Malik, whose marriage to Indian tennis star Sania Mirza in 2010 bridged the two nations bitter sporting and political divide, added: "I think its a small step towards reviving Indo-Pak cricket and I pray this continues at all level." "We reach Delhi from Lahore in 45 minutes and it takes more time to fly to Karachi, so Pakistan and India are that close," he said, speaking from Dubai.

Malik led the last Pakistan team to India in 2007. India s last tour to Pakistan was in 2008 when they featured in the Asia Cup.

Spain braces for more protests over economic woes

Posted:

Spanish activists angered by their grim economic prospects plan to demonstrate nationwide Saturday to mark the one-year anniversary of a movement that inspired similar groups in other countries.

Spain is in deep economic difficulty, prompting fears it may need a bailout similar to those helping Greece, Ireland and Portugal. It is in recession, and unemployment stands at almost 25 percent the highest among the 17 countries using the euro. One in two Spaniards under the age of 25 are out of work.

Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy s conservative government has enacted deep spending cuts to reduce the national debt, but many people blame those measures for deepening families financial plight. The protests began May 15 last year and drew hundreds of thousands of people calling themselves the Indignant Movement. The demonstrations spread across Spain and Europe as anti-austerity sentiment grew.

A year ago, the "indignados" pitched tents and occupied town and city squares across Spain for weeks. Demonstrators clashed with police who eventually moved in to evict them. The mostly young protestors aim to occupy central Puerta del Sol plaza in the Spanish capital Saturday evening and stay for three days. But authorities have warned they won t allow anyone to camp out overnight, and up to 2,000 riot police will be on duty.

"We are here today to celebrate one year since the ... movement started and though we have achieved some things the situation is much worse now, so we need to keep fighting to get things better and that s why we are here today," said 40-year-old activist Ana Pancorvo who was hooking up with one of four Madrid marches due to converge on the Puerta del Sol.

In Britain, about 200 anti-capitalist protesters from the Occupy movement marched through the English capital s financial district, rallying outside the offices of major banking groups such as Merrill Lynch and Santander. Protests were also planned in other European cities.

Antonio Barroso, a London-based Europe analyst for Eurasia Group, said he doubted the Spanish protests would force Rajoy s government to change its policies. The demonstrations "will probably have no impact on the government s strategy," he said in a written analysis.

In Egypt turmoil, thieves hunt pharaonic treasures

Posted:

Taking advantage of Egypt s political upheaval, thieves have gone on a treasure hunt with a spree of illegal digging, preying on the country s ancient pharaonic heritage.

Illegal digs near ancient temples and in isolated desert sites have swelled a staggering 100-fold over the past 16 months since a popular uprising toppled Hosni Mubarak s 29-year regime and security fell apart in many areas as police simply stopped doing their jobs. The pillaging comes on top of a wave of break-ins last year at archaeological storehouses and even at Cairo s famed Egyptian Museum, the country s biggest repository of pharaonic artifacts.

Horrified archaeologists and antiquities authorities are scrambling to prevent smuggling, keeping a watch on European and American auction houses in case stolen artifacts show up there. "Criminals became so bold they are digging in landmark areas." including near the Great Pyramids in Giza, other nearby pyramids and the grand temples of the southern city of Luxor, said Maj.-Gen. Abdel-Rahim Hassan, commander of the Tourism and Antiquities Police Department.

"It is no longer a crime motivated by poverty, it s naked greed and it involves educated people," he said. In a country with more than 5,000 years of civilization buried under its sands, illegal digs have long been a problem. With only slight exaggeration, Egyptians like to joke you can dig anywhere and turn up something ancient, even if its just pottery shards or a statuette.

But in the security void, the treasure hunting has mushroomed, with 5,697 cases of illegal digs since the start of the anti-Mubarak uprising in early 2011 100 times more than the previous year, according to figures obtained by The Associated Press from the Interior Ministry, which is in charge of police.

London: Protests against fiscal austerity policies

Posted:

Several hundred Occupy protesters took to the streets of the City of London on Saturday, calling for an end to "predatory capitalism" after their movement declared a global day of action.

Demonstrators gathered in London s financial heart as Spain s linked movement of "indignados" held marches in 80 towns and cities, and Occupy organisers promised protests in cities including Moscow, New York and Athens. The demonstrators, some waving the movement s trademark tents or wearing white "V for Vendetta" masks, held banners proclaiming "normal predatory capitalism", "we expect political democracy" and "shut down the 1 percent".

They gathered outside St Paul s Cathedral in spring sunshine for a "teach-out" from a series of speakers before "visiting the 1 percent" in a tour of the City taking in various financial institutions. James Meadway, senior economist at the New Economics Foundation, told AFP: "This is a good turnout. The issues haven t gone away. The crisis is getting worse."

Norwegian student Ragnhild Freng Dale said the main achievement of the movement -- galvanised by anger at social inequality in the economic downturn -- was to attract people who did not normally see themselves as activists. "The movement has made a big impact," she said.

City of London Police said they had a "proportionate" operation in place. Minor skirmishes broke out between protesters and police who briefly encircled the demonstration. Occupy organisers said in a statement, "Nowhere in Europe in the unequal distribution of wealth as striking as in the UK.

Activists linked with the global movement on Friday published a manifesto of "concrete proposals for global change", demanding "an absolute end to fiscal austerity policies that benefit only a minority". Other demands included free healthcare and education worldwide and more use of renewable energy.

Inspired by the Occupy Wall Street protesters who pitched tents in New York s Zuccotti Park last September, protest camps sprang up in dozens of countries worldwide, but the movement has since lost momentum.

In London, an Occupy camp outside St Paul s was evicted by police in February after four and a half months.

Algeria's elections a step toward reform: EU observers

Posted:

The European Union observer mission on Saturday called Algeria s elections an important step toward reform, though they said additional measures could have been taken to increase transparency and trust in the process.

Algeria s main ruling party took nearly half the seats in the elections, prompting the independent daily El Watan to describe the election result as the "The Status Quo" in a banner headline. The stunning victory came as a surprise after decades of parliaments more evenly split between several parties, including Islamists, and provoked an audible gasp from journalists when the results were announced Friday.

An alliance of three Islamist parties that had expected to do well, according to their own observers at polling stations, cried fraud. The European Mission, however, said elections took place in an atmosphere of calm efficiency, though it did not describe them as free and fair.

"The elections mark an important first stage of reform," said the observer mission s statement. "The mission noted an atmosphere of general calm and order during the vote." The mission did suggest that a number of measures could be taken to increase the transparence of the process, including giving political parties access to the national voter registry. It had asked to see the registry as well, as part of its observation, and was flatly turned down by the Algerian Interior Ministry, which said the information was confidential.

Mission head Jose Ignacio Salafranca said the mission regretted the decision, describing voting lists as an "essential element" of its work. "According to an agreement we had with the Algerian government, we would have total access to information we received limited access," he said.

Regarding the allegations of fraud, Salafranca suggested that the results of the individual voting stations that should have been made available to the political parties be consulted and compared to the announced results. The National Liberation Front, which led the country to independence from France in 1962 and was the sole political party until 1990, nearly doubled its presence in parliament by winning 220 seats in the 462 seat body.

The National Democratic Rally, known by its French initials RND, and also made up of figures close to the regime, took another 69 seats, giving pro-government parties a comfortable 62 percent majority.

The new parliament will be charged with implementing President Abdelaziz Bouteflika s political reforms, including a rewriting of the constitution. The two parties ran against the momentous changes taking place in the Arab world. Prime Minister Ahmed Ouyahia of the RND called the Arab Spring "a disaster" and urged Algerians to vote for continuity.

In the run-up to the election, Ouyahia and other government officials spoke of the "Algerian Exception" and expressed their confidence that the people would not vote for Islamist parties, such as those that have dominated other post-Arab Spring elections in North Africa.
