ECB indicts Kaneria for spot-fixing
LONDON: Former Pakistan leg-spinner Danish Kaneria has been indicted for spot-fixing by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) disciplinary committee, Express News reported on Friday.
According to a statement, Mervyn Westfield was also found guilty.
“The panel will now consider the appropriate sanction against both players and a decision is expected later today (Friday),” said the statement.
Earlier, Kaneria had challenged the ECB through his lawyer Farogh Nasim after the organisation summoned the leg-spinner for a disciplinary hearing into corruption charges.
The ECB wanted Kaneria in for the hearing after he was named in a London court as a go-between in the scandal following which his former Essex teammate Mervyn Westfield was given a four-month sentence.
The leg-spinner was arrested in 2010 along with Westfield on suspicion of spot-fixing during an Essex match against Durham in 2009 before being released without charge.

Dilshan's century lifts Sri Lanka
GALLE: Tillakaratne Dilshan scored his first Test century in a year as Sri Lanka made Pakistan toil on the opening day of the first cricket Test in Galle on Friday.
Dilshan made 101 and Kumar Sangakkara was unbeaten on 56 as the hosts, electing to bat after winning the toss, took their lunch score of 94 for one to 188 for two by tea.
Dilshan reached his 13th Test century by sweeping left-arm spinner Abdur Rehman for a boundary just before the tea interval and celebrated by raising both hands high in the air.
It was the 35-year-old’s first three-figure knock in Test cricket since making a career-best 193 against England at Lord’s in June last year.
Dilshan, who hit 13 boundaries and a six, was dismissed in the next over when he was leg-before to off-spinner Saeed Ajmal.
The opener put on 63 for the first wicket with Tharanga Paranavitana and 124 for the second with Sangakkara to lay the foundation for a big first innings total.
Left-handed Sangakkara looked solid with six boundaries, while skipper Mahela Jayawardene was yet to score.
Ajmal was Pakistan’s most successful bowler with two for 46 from 15 overs on a slow pitch that offered no assistance to the bowlers after the initial moisture had dried out.
Pakistan’s lone success before lunch came midway through the morning session when Paranavitana was stumped in Ajmal’s first over after making a scratchy 24.
Paranavitana should have gone on 15 when he was beaten by an Umar Gul delivery, but umpire Ian Gould turned down a loud appeal for a catch at the wicket.
Replays showed a thin edge, but Paranavitana survived because the Umpire Decision Review System (UDRS) is not being used in the series.
The left-hander moved to 24 when he was dropped by Azhar Ali at silly point off Ajmal, but was dismissed later in the same over.
Mohammad Hafeez was leading Pakistan for the first time in Test cricket after Misbahul Haq was handed a one-match ban for his team’s slow over-rate in Monday’s final one-day international.
The tourists awarded a Test cap to 32-year-old middle-order batsman Mohammad Ayub, already a veteran of 93 first-class matches in which he has scored 6,074 runs.
Pakistan picked two seamers, Gul and Junaid Khan, to complement a three-man spin attack of Hafeez, Ajmal and Abdur Rehman.
The hosts were without frontline seamer Chanaka Welegedara, who woke up with a sore shoulder and was replaced by Nuwan Pradeep.

Sardar Mehtab Ahmed Khan

Political career: Former chief minister
of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa from 1997 to 1999; federal minister for railways in 2008. Also served as a senator from March 2003, but resigned in 2008 when he won the NA-17 seat in the 2008 general elections.
Controversy: Reportedly involved in a wheat scandal case. He remained in Attock Fort jail for three years.
Makhdoom Shahabuddin
Declared assets: Rs127.5 million
Political career: Contested his first election from NA-148 in 1988 on a PML ticket, losing to his uncle who contested on a PPP ticket. Recently elected chairman of the southern Punjab chapter of the PPP. Part of PPP's central executive committee.
Controversy: Alleged to have issued unauthorised quota for the import of ephedrine as health minister. Anti-Narcotics Force issued a non-bailable arrest warrant against him, hours after he was nominated by the PPP as the next premier.
Raja Pervez Ashraf
Declared assets: Rs62million
Political career: Elected twice from NA-51, Gujjar Khan. Appointed federal minister for water and power after the 2008 elections. Was again appointed a minister in the recently-dissolved cabinet.
Controversy: Faces corruption allegation for receiving kickbacks in rental power projects and buying properties in London. The Supreme Court also directed NAB to take action against Ashraf for his alleged involvement in rental power case.
Qamar Zaman Kaira
Declared assets: Rs57 million
Political career: Contested elections from NA-106, served as information minister twice – between 2009 and 2011, and in the recent Cabinet that was disqualified by the Supreme Court. Also served as minister for Kashmir affairs and Northern Areas, and acting Governor of Gilgit-Baltistan.
Controversy: None.
Maulana Fazlur Rahman
Declared assets: Rs5 million
Political career: Chief of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl, a right-wing politician and cleric, and currently serving as the president of the Assembly of Islamic Clerics. Contested, and won, his first election from NA-18 in 1988. Lost in 1990 and 1997.
Controversy: Allegedly possess military land measuring up to 600 kanals in DI Khan. Allegedly won out-of-turn tenders for diesel supplies in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa in second Benazir government.
