Punjab Chief Minister, Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif has said that the nations progress with visionary leadership and continuous struggle and Pakistan needs the same leadership today who can put the country on the road to progress. He expressed these views during meeting with young entrepreneurs here on Wednesday. Shahbaz Sharif said that the country is passing through difficult times of its history but the rulers are busy in looting national exchequer. He said that if we did not mend our ways, no one would come to our rescue. He said that we have to march forward by relying on our own resources and by the dint of hard work and honesty. The Chief Minister said that Pakistan is passing through a critical phase and is facing serious problems like terrorism, energy, poverty and unemployment. He said that the gulf between the poor and the rich had increased during the tenure of civil and military governments in last 64 years. He said that corruption has been present to some extent during the tenure of all governments but the corruption during the last four years is unprecedented. He said that electricity loadshedding has made the life of the people miserable and people are becoming jobless due to closure of industries. He said that terrorism has shaken the foundations of the country and it cannot make progress without elimination of menace of terrorism and maintenance of peace. He said that Turkey and South Korea have been facing problems like Pakistan. He said that Japan and Germany were ruined after Second World War but due to hard work these nations restored their lost status and achieved the destinations of development rapidly. He said that China has become the second big economic power of the world. He said that China is a sincere friend of Pakistan but trade of Pakistan with China as compared to India is negligible. It is need of the hour that trade with China should be enhanced, he added. The Chief Minister said that the future of Pakistan is linked with information technology and Punjab government has taken solid steps for promotion of IT in the province. He said that setting up of E-government and IT technology has been promoted in various government departments. He said that a campus of Technology University has also been set up in the Arfa Karim Software Technology.

SC to hear memo case today

A nine-member larger bench of the Supreme Court will resume hearing of memo case today. Former Pakistan ambassador to US, Husain Haqqani will not appear before the apex court as he is under treatment abroad. During previous hearing of the case, the Memo Commission, constituted by the country’s highest court had submitted its report, establishing that the memorandum was authentic and had found Haqqani guilty of authoring the memo. The nine-member bench of the SC will start proceeding of the case today in the light of Memo Commission report.

Faisalabad: Power looms workers end long march

Hundreds of power looms workers started their long march from Faisalabad towards Chief Minister Punjab’s tent office in Lahore on the call of Labour Qaumi Movement. The workers were of the view that their salaries have not been raised despite government’s announcement. The power looms owners accepted the demands of workers and announced 29 percent increase in their salaries. The protesting workers called off protest after acceptance of their demands and ended long march at the Khariyanwala Chowk.

Bosnians bury more Srebrenica massacre victims

Another 520 victims of the Srebrenica massacre were buried in Bosnia on Wednesday (July 11), marking the 17th anniversary of the atrocity, for which accused mastermind Ratko Mladic is now standing trial. Under a scorching sun, thousands of Bosnian Muslims prayed with open palms as rows of coffins draped in green cloth were passed overhead through the crowd and interred in the Potocari memorial centre in eastern Bosnia. The ceremony, a yearly ritual, brings the number of Srebrenica victims identified and buried to 5,657. It was marred by whistling and booing when foreign and local dignitaries arrived, reflecting anger over a ruling that thousands of Muslim refugees from Srebrenica, who no longer live there, cannot vote in the town s local election in October, meaning control will likely pass to Serbs. The remains of an estimated 2,400 victims are still to be identified or dug up from the mass graves they were dumped in by Mladic s Bosnian Serb forces as they swept into a town designated by the United Nations as a safe haven in the maelstrom of war. "The brutality of what took place here can never be forgotten not just in our generation, but also for all time" said New York Rabbi Arthur Schneier, a Holocaust survivor and the first non-Muslim cleric to address the annual ceremony. Mladic, the 70-year-old former general of Bosnian Serb forces, was arrested in May last year, after he was found hiding in a village in northern Serbia. U.N. prosecutors opened their case against him on Monday at the U.N. war crimes tribunal in The Hague, where he faces a string of charges including genocide for the Srebrenica massacre of 8,000 Muslim men and boys and the 43-month siege of the Bosnian capital Sarajevo, which killed more than ten thousand people. The trial comes as little compensation to the families of his victims. Dzemila Omerovic, whose husband was killed in the conflict says she thinks Mladic will be acquitted. "They (The Hague War Crimes Court) will acquit Karadzic now, they are only killing us again with this. This court shouldn t have been established in the first place. Injustice hurts more than killing. He s (Mladic s) laughing in our faces, his disrespect for the victims, it hurts."

PCB recalls Kamran Akmal, Razzaq for T20 World Cup

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Wednesday included controversial wicketkeeper-batsman Kamran Akmal, opener Imran Nazir and all-rounder Abdul Razzaq in the list of 30 probables for the World Twenty20 in Sri Lanka in September-October. Kamran, who last played for Pakistan in the 2011 World Cup, was recalled after a Pakistan Board integrity committee cleared him after questioning last week over his role in spot-fixing on tours overseas. His name figured at the trial of three Pakistani Test players in England last year over spot-fixing, but neither the London Court, which jailed former Pakistan captain Salman Butt and fast bowlers Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Aamer, questioned him nor the International Cricket Council (ICC), which banned the three players, took any action against him. Butt, Asif and Aamer were held guilty of conspiring to deliberately no-ball more than once during the 2010 Lord s Test and earlier in the same year, Kamran was perceived to have underperformed in the Sydney Test. Kamran failing to run out Shane Watson and dropping three sitters off Michael Hussey were seen as deliberate acts, and the ICC directed the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to form an integrity committee to verify the players  antecedents and investigate their assets in the aftermath of the London spot-fixing trial. Test and ODI captain Misbah-ul-Haq does not find a place in the list after losing his Twenty20 place and captaincy against Sri Lanka where Mohammad Hafeez led the side. The final squad of 15 will be announced in mid-August. The probables: Mohammad Hafeez, Ahmed Shahzad, Khalid Latif, Nasir Jamshed, Imran Nazir, Shahzaib Hasan, Awais Zia, Sharjeel Khan, Umar Akmal, Asad Shafiq, Haris Sohail, Shoaib Malik, Rameez Raja, Shahid Afridi, Hammad Azam, Abdul Razzaq, Umar Gul, Mohammad Sami, Sohail Tanvir, Yasir Arafat, Wahab Riaz, Junaid Khan, Aizaz Cheema, Anwar Ali, Saeed Ajmal , Abdur Rehman, Raza Hasan, Sarfraz Ahmed, Kamran Akmal, Shakeel Ansar.

New Zealand beat Windies by 88 runs in 3rd ODI

Nathan McCullum hit 50 and took two wickets plus a crucial catch to lead New Zealand to a 88-run victory over West Indies in the third one-day international on Wednesday to cut the hosts  lead to 2-1 in the five-match series. McCullum hit four boundaries and a six from 70 as New Zealand reached 249-9 off 50 overs at Warner Park. He then took 2-40 from six overs, removing big-hitting Kieron Pollard (16) and Darren Sammy (7) and catching Dwayne Smith (19) off Jacob Oram, who claimed 2-22 from seven overs. Opener Rob Nicol top-scored for New Zealand with 59 off 69 deliveries while B.J. Watling also chipped in with 40. West Indies  run chase never got going, with the hosts being bowled out for 161 off 34.3 overs.

Amir Khan gets back WBA crown ahead of Garcia fight

Britain s Amir Khan will walk into the ring as a world champion Saturday after the World Boxing Association told him on Wednesday that he has been reinstated to the light-welterweight throne. Khan will meet unbeaten American Danny Garcia, the reigning World Boxing Council champion, on Saturday to unify the crowns in a showdown that was booked after a planned Khan rematch against Lamont Peterson was called off. Peterson defeated Khan last December in a controversial split decision where the Englishman had two points deducted by referee Joe Cooper for shoving, lost points that cost Khan the decision and two world titles. A rematch was planned but scuttled when Peterson tested positive for abnormally high levels of testosterone and later admitted he had been taking testosterone treatments. Khan pushed to have the result stricken and his titles reinstated. The first move in that direction came on Wednesday when the WBA returned its title to Khan, although the International Boxing Federation has not followed suit and the result has not been changed to no contest. Khan, 26-2 with 18 knockouts, confirmed the WBA title reinstatement in a Twitter posting and said on his website that he was especially excited it happened before the fight against Garcia, 23-0 with 14 knockouts. "This is a really important fight for me and one that I m not overlooking," Khan said. "I have always wanted to add the WBC belt to my collection and to have it on the line with my old WBA belt makes this fight even more special. "Saturday is going be a great night for British boxing and I m going be coming home with the belts."

Voeckler wins Tour de France 10th stage

Thomas Voeckler of France led a five-rider breakaway to win the 10th stage of the Tour de France as the race entered the Alps on Wednesday, while Bradley Wiggins retained the overall lead. The 194.5-kilometre ride from Macon-sur-Valserine marked a return to racing after Tuesday s tumultuous rest day in which a Cofidis rider was suspended by his team following his arrest by police in a doping probe. For the first time in the Tour, the peloton scaled the 17.4-kilometre Grand Colombier pass - classified as one of the hardest climbs in pro cycling in part for two tough patches with steep, 12 percent gradients. Voeckler, the Europcar rider who wore the yellow jersey for 10 days last year, earned his third Tour stage victory in a decade-long career competing in cycling s premier race. With a few kilometres to go, Voeckler dusted off the breakaway group, beating runner-up Michele Scarponi of Italy by 3 seconds. Jens Voigt of Germany - at 40, the oldest rider this year - was third, another 4 seconds slower. At several points during the stage, Wiggins came under attack from some of his biggest rivals but nearly all failed to make up any ground. Italy s Vincenzo Nibali tried to surge ahead in a big descent; Belgium s Jurgen Van Den Broeck attempted to jump ahead on the day s big climb; reigning champion Cadel Evans tried to shake Wiggins near the end but to no avail. Riders embark Thursday on what Wiggins called the hardest stage of the race this year - a relatively short 148-kilometer trek from Albertville to La Toussuire, but with two of the toughest climbs in pro cycling and an uphill finish.

FIFA names Havelange, Teixeira in kickbacks case

Former FIFA president Joao Havelange and one-time Brazilian football leader Ricardo Teixeira received millions of dollars in a World Cup kickbacks scandal, football s world governing body confirmed on Wednesday. FIFA finally published a Swiss court dossier which detailed that Teixeira received at least 12.74 million Swiss francs (now $13 million) from 1992-97 in payments from World Cup marketing partner ISL. The Swiss-based agency s collapse into bankruptcy in 2001 sparked a criminal probe and exposed the routine practice of buying influence from top sports officials. The 41-page document showed Havelange received a payment of 1.5 million Swiss francs (then about $1 million) in 1997, one year before he was succeeded as FIFA president by Sepp Blatter. Payments "attributed" to accounts connected to the two Brazilians totaled almost 22 million Swiss francs from 1992-2000. The scale of kickbacks tied to World Cup broadcasting and marketing deals was revealed in a report by a prosecutor in the Swiss canton (state) of Zug who investigated Havelange and Teixeira for "embezzlement, or alternatively disloyal management." The document had been blocked from publication since June 2010, soon after prosecutors, FIFA and two of the most powerful men in world football reached a settlement deal to close the criminal investigation. FIFA, Havelange and Teixeira repaid 5.5 million Swiss francs (then $6.1 million) to end prosecutor Thomas Hildbrand s probe on condition that their identities remain secret. Teixeira, who repaid 2.5 million Swiss francs, denied criminal conduct. Havelange, who paid 500,000 Swiss francs, "did not comment on the accusation of criminal conduct," the report said. Before agreeing to repay 2.5 million Swiss francs, FIFA made its "consent conditional" upon dropping proceedings against its former president and then-serving member of its executive committee, the report showed. FIFA released the document hours after Switzerland s Supreme Court threw out an appeal by Havelange and Teixeira to suppress the dossier, and announced its ruling that media organizations should receive details of the ISL case. "FIFA is pleased that the ISL non-prosecution order can now be made public," football s world governing body said in a statement.

Hubble telescope spots fifth moon near Pluto

The irregular-shaped moon, nicknamed S/2012 for now, is about six to 15 miles (10 to 24 kilometres) across, the US space agency said. Last year, astronomers reported finding the fourth moon around the icy dwarf planet some three billion miles away. "The moons form a series of neatly nested orbits, a bit like Russian dolls," said Mark Showalter of the SETI Institute in Mountain View, California. Pluto s largest moon, Charon, is 648 miles across. The other two, Nix and Hydra, are between 20 and 70 miles in diameter, NASA said. Hubble -- a potent space telescope that has transformed the field of astronomy since it was first launched in 1990 -- discovered Nix and Hydra in 2005. Astronomers at the US Naval Observatory glimpsed Charon in 1978. Pluto, once known as the ninth planet from the Sun, was declassified as a full-fledged planet in August 2006 and joined the new category, dwarf planet. At about 1,430 miles wide, it is about two-thirds the size of the moon and has a mass less than one percent of the Earth s.

Oil prices bounce back above $86

Hopes that the Federal Reserve will signal potential steps to boost a slowing U.S. economy have helped the price of oil rise more than 2 percent on Wednesday. China also reported strong auto sales for last month, and the U.S. said crude supplies declined last week by a much larger amount than what analysts expected. Benchmark U.S. crude rose by $2.05, or 2.4 percent, to $85.96 per barrel in afternoon trading in New York. Brent crude, which helps set the price of imported oil, increased by $1.96, or 2 percent, to $99.93 per barrel in London. The Fed is expected to release the minutes of a June meeting where it decided to extend a bond-buying program through the end of the year. Independent oil analyst Andrew Lipow said investors are betting the minutes will provide new details about what steps the Fed would take to stimulate the economy if it keeps slowing down. Prices began to rise early in the day after China s auto industry said sales jumped 9 percent in June despite a slowing economy. China has quickly become the world s biggest market for new vehicles, leading some cities to limit new registrations in hopes of controlling traffic congestion. Those limits drove customers to showrooms last month to buy cars ahead of any restrictions. In the U.S., the government said oil supplies fell last week by 4.7 million barrels triple the decline expected by analysts as refineries cranked up production of gasoline and other refined fuels. Average oil demand also increased slightly last week. Meanwhile, the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries reported that world supplies fell last month by about 100,000 barrels per day, in part because of a large drop in production in Iran. Iranian oil production has suffered as Europe and the U.S. work to limit its exports and force the country to scale back its nuclear program. Western nations fear Iran is building a weapon; Iran denies the claim. In other futures trading, heating oil added 3 cents to $2.75 per gallon while gasoline futures rose by 1.76 cents to $2.7645 per gallon. Natural gas increased by 6.2 cents to $2.799 per 1,000 cubic feet.

Euro hits 2-year low vs dollar after Fed minutes

The euro plummeted to a two-year low against the dollar Wednesday after minutes from the Federal Reserve s last meeting suggested that policymakers are not considering any immediate plans for more bond purchases to help the economy. The euro sank as low as $1.2211 after the minutes were released, its lowest point against the dollar since July 1, 2010. By late Wednesday, the euro was trading at $1.2228. It was worth $1.2254 late Tuesday. According to the minutes, several Fed policymakers said during their June meeting that they would consider more stimulus, but only if the economy worsens. Traders interpreted that to mean that the Fed won t announce any bond buying next month. The Fed has launched two rounds of bond purchases, most recently in August 2010, to lower long-term interest rates and make stocks more attractive to investors. Lower interest rates can weigh on a currency by reducing the returns investors get from holding it. With a third round of bond-buying off the table for now, traders bought dollars. Europe s debt crisis is also weighed on the euro. The euro has fallen about 6 percent so far this year against the dollar as the region s financial crisis spread to Spain. Boris Schlossberg, a currency strategist at BK Asset Management, said the euro could fall as low as $1.20 by the end of the month if more isn t done to ease Europe s debt crisis. The dollar strengthened against most other currencies. The British pound fell to $1.5493 from $1.5509. The dollar rose to 79.67 Japanese yen from 79.45 Japanese yen and to 0.9822 Swiss franc from 0.9801 Swiss franc. The dollar fell to 1.0211 Canadian dollar from 1.0227 Canadian dollar.

Faisalabad: Power loom workers march towards Lahore

Power loom workers in Faisalabad carrying batons started protesting on the roads against non implementation of announcement of increase in salaries. Workers rally were taken out in different areas of Faisalabad on the appeal of Labour Qaumi Movement. The workers staged sit-ins on different points including Jhang Road, Lakar Mandi, Faizabad, Ghulam Muhammad Abad and Jaranwala Road. The protesters said that their salaries were not increased despite the announcement. They shouted slogans against the Punjab government and said that the district management had bowed down to the factory owners while the workers were deprived of their right. The workers laid siege to the government offices in Faisalabad and after failure of talks with the district government they started long march towards Lahore. The protesting workers said that they will stage sit-in at Minar-e-Pakistan in front of Chief Minster’s tent office for the acceptance of their demand.

New provinces: Presidential reference sent to NA

In the session of National Assembly, Deputy Speaker said that President Asif Ali Zardari has sent reference for constitution of a commission to look into issues related to creation of South Punjab province and revival of the previous status of Bahawalpur. In a message to Speaker National Assembly, he said six-members should be nominated by the Speaker of the National Assembly&sbquo; six by the Chairman Senate and two by Speaker of the Punjab Assembly. The commission would submit its recommendations to the government within 30 days regarding boundary of new provinces, seat adjustment of national and provincial seats on population basis, representation in Senate and seats for minorities. In the light of recommendations of the commission, special amendments would be introduced in the constitution. The MQM while appreciating the presidential message has demanded that the commission should also consider about formation of Hazara Province.

It s a dream come true for 15 Chinese couples. They traveled all the way to southern Germany to get married. And the fabled Neuschwanstein Castle setting did not disappoint. "The scenery in Germany is beautiful. The culture is also very interesting. The atmosphere is fantastic. My parents have been to Germany twice already. That s what gave us the idea to have our wedding here," said a participant of mass wedding. "I have always loved Germany. Germans are very romantic. To celebrate my wedding here is a childhood dream come true," he said The couples are spending just three days in Germany - so no honeymoons - at least not just yet.

Athletics: Bolt scorched fastest time of the year

World record holder Usain Bolt stormed to the fastest time of the year in winning the 100m at the Diamond League meeting here on Thursday. Olympic champion Bolt ran 9.76sec, beating the time he set earlier this month in Kingston by six hundredths of a second. Compatriot and former world record holder Asafa Powell was second in 9.91sec with French European champion Christophe Lemaitre an impressive third in a high quality field in 10.04sec. World bronze medallist Kim Collins of St Kitts & Nevis was fourth in 10.05sec. The win, and more importantly the time, made up for Bolt s sluggish performance in Ostrava last week where he ran his slowest time in three years, 10.04sec.

Oil prices slump to new lows on demand worries

Oil prices dived to fresh seven-month lows Thursday, driven by weak data in the United States and the dollar s rally against the euro amid worries of a possible Spain bailout, dealers said. New York s main contract, West Texas Intermediate crude for delivery in July, tumbled $1.29 to $85.53 a barrel, its lowest level since October 20. In London, Brent North Sea crude for July slumped $1.60 to settle at $101.87 per barrel. US data on first-quarter economic growth and the jobs market in May signaled that the economy continues to struggle to pick up speed, a sign that favored sellers in the oil market. The government s weekly US oil stockpiles report, for the period to May 25, added to that sentiment, with crude inventories significantly higher while gasoline consumption remained relatively weak. Despite pump prices falling steadily since March, gasoline shipments for the past four weeks were down 2.6 percent from a year ago, the Department of Energy said. "I don t know if the (inventory) figures were so bearish; it s more that the market is concerned over the global economy," Phil Flynn of Price Futures Group said of the overall New York market trend.

NASA: Cosmic smash-up expected; Earth will survive

Don t worry about when the world as we know it might end. NASA has calculated that our entire Milky Way galaxy will crash into a neighboring galaxy with a head-on hit in 4 billion years. Astronomers in a Thursday NASA news conference announced that observations from the Hubble Space Telescope detail a long-anticipated galactic smash-up. Astronomers had seen the Andromeda galaxy coming at us, but thought there was a chance that its sideways motion would make it miss or graze the Milky Way. Hubble readings say there s no chance of that. Scientists say the sun and Earth should easily survive what will be a 1.2 million mile per hour (1.9 million kph) galactic merger, but likely will be in a different place in the cosmos.

IMF: no bailout plans for Spain in the works

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) spokesman Gerry Rice s comments Thursday come as Spanish Deputy Prime Minister Soraya Saenz de Santamaria arrived for talks with IMF Managing Director Christine Lagarde and Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner. The Spanish official was discussing how Spain can finance an overhaul of its banking sector. The government nationalized a major bank earlier this month. It now says it will need to inject euro19 billion in public money into the bank  more than twice what the government had estimated. Doubts over how recession-hit Spain will handle the bailout have sparked concerns that the country will soon follow Greece, Portugal and Ireland in asking for financial assistance.

Creation of new provinces: Zardari sends reference to Speaker

President Asif Ali Zardari sent a reference to Speaker National Assembly Thursday night calling for the constitution of a commission to look into the creation of two new provinces namely Multan and Bahawalpur in Punjab. The commission, to be comprised six Senators, six MNAs and two members from the Punjab Assembly, would initiate the process of amendments in the Constitution for the purpose. Spokesperson to President Senator Farhatullah Babar said that the Commission will submit its report within one month to be followed by the process of Constitutional amendments for making the two new provinces. He said that the reference drew attention of the Speaker to the resolutions passed by the National Assembly and the Punjab Assembly calling for the creation of the new provinces.

Seraiki province before elections, says Gilani

Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani has said that Seraiki province will be established in the southern Punjab before the next election. This he said while speaking in an appearance on the monthly television programme during which he answers questions from people around the country. Answering a question regarding his conviction in the contempt court, he said that after the decision of the Speaker there is no need for any appeal... Parliament is the supreme institution and it has its own domain, and all the institutions derive power from the parliament, and after her decision the matter is over.

Cabinet reshuffle on the cards

According to sources, reshuffle in the federal cabinet is on the cards and portfolio of Defence Minister Ahmad Mukhtar and Federal Minister for Water and Power Naved Qamar are likely to be changed. Chaudhry Ahmad Mukhtar has been serving as defence Minister since 2009 while Naved Qamar was made Minister for Water and Power in 2011.

Talking to media in Lahore, Federal Minister Amin Fahim said that Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) is against the division of Sindh. He said that everyone must stay united in the province. Amin Fahim said that charges are leveled against every popular government and the government of PPP is very popular. He said Pakistan and the US need to work together on issues of mutual interest on the basis of a spirit of partnership and respect.

Peshawar: 5 killed as car turned turtle

The car was coming to Peshawar from Mardan on Motorway. When it reached near Chamkani it turned turtle due to over speeding while overtaking another vehicle. The dead were identified as Yaro, Fawad, Asghar, Farhan and Saleem. The dead bosies were shifted to a nearby hospital.

Federal Budget 2012-13 to be presented today

All the preparations had been finalized for the presentation of the national budget for the fiscal year 2012-13. Both the Houses of the Parliament have been fully prepared for today’s budget sessions separately. A lot of hue and cry from opposition benches, especially from lawmakers of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) is expected against Prime Minister Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani after his conviction from the Supreme Court in contempt of court case against him. Finance Minister Abdul Hafeez Sheikh while responding to questions on the occasion of release of Survey of Pakistan Report 2011-12, asked the reporters not to end all of their questions as he would have to respond to them day after tomorrow. Both the Houses of the Parliament were summoned to meet separately by the Acting President Nayyar Hussain Bokhari almost on week ago. It is the 42nd session of the 5th Parliamentary year of the incumbent National Assembly. It will be the fifth and last budget of the sitting coalition government led by PPP and will be laid before the National Assembly by Finance Minister Dr. Abdul Hafeez Sheikh. Similarly, as per agenda of the Upper House of the Parliament, copies of the finance bill containing the Annual Budget Statement, for making recommendations, if any, thereon to the National Assembly, will be presented in the House. Sources said that both the Houses would be adjourned for next two days after budget speech by the Finance Minister. Well placed sources informed that PM L-N members of the National Assembly of would continue their protest against Prime Minister Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani so lot of hue and cry is expected during budget speech of Finance Minister, however, PML-N Senators are likely to maintain their prestige and sanctity in today’s session.

Pakistan, Sri Lanka gear up for first T20

Hosts Sri Lanka will swing into ICC World Twenty20 mood as they take on Pakistan in a two-match international series with both teams looking to move up in the ICC T20 Championship table. Today s match marks the start of a series between Sri Lanka and Pakistan that will encompass another Twenty20 at the same venue, five one-day internationals and three Test matches. Sri Lanka, who will host ICC World Twenty20, need to win the series 2-0 if they are to move up from third place in the ICC T20 Championship table. The two teams will also be keen to get some good match practice ahead of the World Twenty20 to be held from September 18 to October 7 in Colombo, Pallekele and Hambantota later this year. Mahela Jayawardene s side has the opportunity to rise to second in the table, and usurp South Africa who currently occupy second place, if the 2-0 scenario occurs. Sri Lanka s ratings points would rise to 124, while Pakistan s would drop to 107 and put the latter in seventh place just above India when the points are calculated to within the decimal point. If Pakistan, the ICC World Twenty20 2009 champions, beat Sri Lanka 2-0 in the series, then newly appointed Twenty20 captain Mohammad Hafeez would see his side move up to fourth, one ratings point behind New Zealand. Should Sri Lanka lose the series 2-0, they would see the ICC World Twenty20 2009 runners-up drop to sixth in the Championship table, just below Australia when the points are calculated to within the decimal point. If both matches are tied, neither side will move up or down the table, while if one match is tied and Sri Lanka win the other match, Pakistan will drop to sixth in the table after losing two ratings points. If the scenario is reversed and Pakistan win one match, while the other is tied, this visitors will remain fifth, while hosts Sri Lanka will drop to fourth in the table.

Dhoni favours Pak-India series

India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni endorsed the idea of resuming the bilateral cricketing ties with Pakistan, but expressed his doubts over the scheduling of matches. "If Pakistan come and play here, it s good for us. But I don t know about the scheduling... How they will fit it. We are open to it [the idea of playing with Pakistan again]," Dhoni said. Relationship between the two neighbours hit a low following the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, and the bilateral cricket ties between the two countries were snapped since then. But the BCCI s invitation to PCB chief Zaka Ashraf to come to India and watch the IPL final and the inclusion of a Pakistan team in the Champions League Twenty20 indicated that things are on the mend now.

Viswanathan Anand wins world chess championship

World chess champion Viswanathan Anand defeated Israel s Boris Gelfand in a tiebreaker in Moscow to retain his world chess championship title. Anand beat Gelfand in a four-round tie-breaker after the 12-match contest was tied at 6-6. Three of the four rapid chess games were drawn but the 42-year-old Indian edged out his challenger in the second game. "The match was so even that I had no sense of what shape the tie-break would take. And I think right now probably the only feeling I have is relief. I think I m too tense to be happy, I m really relieved," Anand said at a post-match news conference. "I wouldn t say there s some kind of justice in this or something, but you simply play the tie-break. I think given that we drew our first 12 games, deciding it by a tie-break is quite a reasonable situation. Obviously, I m not suggesting we start with it, but after such a long and tough match maybe it s the only thing that could separate us. Well, even just the tie-break, of course I was incredibly tense, I imagine I opened it as well. And well, things really went my way. That s all you can say. I think I can say that I won because I won, that s it," Anand added. Gelfand, 43, gained the right to be a contender for the world title after defeating Russia s Alexander Grischuk last May. He said his title match would help to raise the profile of the game in Israel. Viswanathan Anand, world champion since 2007, won the junior title in 1989 and became India s first Grand Master at the age of 16. Anand became the first Asian to win the FIDE world chess championship after defeating Spain s Alexei Shirov in Tehran in 2000. His title win on Wednesday was his fourth in a row -- he also won in 2007, 2008 and 2010.

Rangers official among 5 gunned down in Karachi

Five people, including a Rangers official, were killed in different incidents of violence and target-killing in last 12 hours in Karachi. The renewed wave target killing continued in the metropolis, claiming 13 lives in 24 hours, sparking panic in various localities, with business activities suspended, police said. According to police, Abdul Hameed Chachar, the Rangers sub-inspector, was gunned down early morning by unknown bikers outside his home Korangi Dhai area. In Korangi, 35-year-old Asad was shot dead by some unidentified persons. In a similar incident, a man was shot dead in Maripur locality of the city near Dua Hotel. In Lea Market area, a man was shot dead during firing by unidentified persons while another received bullet wounds. Police also recovered a dead body from Lyari Stream near Pak Colony.
