ODI series: Pakistan hope for better results in Colombo

If one was to look at the scorecards of the ongoing series, the honours have been shared evenly by both teams — Pakistan and Sri Lanka have been convincing winners in the matches they dominated.

Yet both teams have had their fair share of weaknesses to overcome as the third One-Day International (ODI) takes place at the R Premadasa Stadium, Colombo.

Pakistan, despite an attack boasting of experienced individuals, failed to contain the Sri Lankan batsmen in the second ODI and the batsmen were not up to the task in reply.

In the opening ODI, the same was the case for Sri Lanka. Preceding the ongoing ODI series were two Twenty20s that saw the same pattern as well.

With a crucial match today – followed by two more ODIs at the same venue – both teams would be keen to put past their inconsistent show and display a more even performance in the same game.

Misbahul Haq will remain calm and composed ahead of the match. His opposite number, Mahela Jayawardena, on the other hand, is looking to end Pakistan's unbeaten run over Sri Lanka at the venue – Pakistan have not lost an ODI against the hosts in the past five games the teams have faced each other in.

“We haven’t played that well against Pakistan [at the R Premadasa Stadium], it’s up to us to challenge ourselves,” Jayawardene told ESPNcricinfo.

“Pakistan's a quality team. The bowling unit, with the variations they have, has the fire-power to play in any conditions, that that is why they are successful in these conditions."

Euro 2012: France reflect on what might have been

DONETSK:

France’s players admitted frustration after failing to turn their dominance into victory against England in their Euro 2012 opener but took heart from their reaction to falling behind.

Laurent Blanc’s side enjoyed 60% of possession and registered 15 shots on target to England’s one but had to settle for only a point after Samir Nasri cancelled out Joleon Lescott’s opener.

“We’re not really satisfied, it’s a bit frustrating,” said midfielder Florent Malouda, the most experienced player in France’s squad with 78 caps. “We wanted to win to start the competition well but looking at the start, it’s a good result. We reacted well to England’s goal. We had the possession but it wasn’t enough."

France’s next assignment sees them tackle Ukraine on Friday.

Gerrard salutes ‘unbreakable’ England

Meanwhile, England captain Steven Gerrard hailed his side's 'unbreakable' defence after managing to frustrate France.

“I thought we defended really well and were resolute," he said. "When we turned over possession, we looked really dangerous so I’m satisfied. Considering we haven’t been together so long, I think the lads have taken the tactics on board really quickly. We’re happy with the point but it only becomes a good point if we go and build on it now and try and we’ll try to take the three points against Sweden.”

Shevchenko revels in ‘historic game’

Meanwhile, Andrei Shevchenko rolled back the years as he leapt like a man a decade younger than his 35 years to head two superb goals to cancel out Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s opener for the fancied Swedes against Ukraine.

“I feel great, it was an historic game for us, it’s a victory,” grinned Shevchenko, who made his debut back in 1995. “I feel like 20, not 35. If I can choose my dreams I want to dream of a day like that, it’s a fantastic day. I want to thank everyone who worked with me the last year-and-a-half – I had so many knee and back problems. Now I am fit thanks to them.”

Onwards and upwards, says dejected Hamren

Swedish coach Erik Hamren said he and his players would spend a day brooding after the 2-1 defeat.

However, the 54-year-old – who has been in the post since 2009 – added that from dawn on Wednesday they would have to lift themselves and focus on their next match against England on Friday.

“It was not the happiest bus ride of my life,” admitted the Swede, who at club level has been twice a Norwegian title winner and once in Denmark. “When you lose, and when you are not happy with your performance, it is never a happy time. No-one talks, it is very quiet. The players are capable of doing their own navel-gazing. They are winners, they don’t like to lose."

Russia, Poland play out 1-1 draw in Group A

Alan Dzagoev scored his third goal of the European Championship, and Jakub Blaszczykowski scored what will surely be one of the goals of the tournament.

With hooligans fighting one another and police away from the stadium, Russia and Poland played out a 1-1 draw Tuesday. The result left Russia at the top of Group A, but all four teams still have a chance to qualify for the quarterfinals.

Dzagoev was first to score Tuesday. He darted past defender Lukasz Piszczek in the 37th minute and sent a glancing header beyond goalkeeper Przemyslaw Tyton after a curling free kick from Andrei Arshavin.

Russia continued to push forward after the goal, allowing Poland to equalize on the counter in the 57th when Blaszczykowski cut in from the right and sent a searing left-foot drive into the far corner of the goal.

At least 15 people were injured in fighting between fans. Polish police also fired rubber bullets and tear gas at a group of young Poles who attacked them with glass bottles.

The violence erupted around a group of thousands of Russian fans who marched in a cordon of riot police across a bridge over the Vistula River to the National Stadium to celebrate the Russia Day national holiday.

The march was seen as a provocation by many Poles, who share a difficult history with Russia, including decades of control by Moscow during the Cold War. Many Poles felt the authorities should not have allowed the Russians to march as a group in Warsaw given the historical wounds.

Russia s football federation pleaded with its fans to behave after video emerged online of supporters beating stewards at the Municipal Stadium in Wroclaw during the match against the Czech Republic, warning that more trouble could cost the team points.

UEFA opened disciplinary proceedings against the Russian federation following the trouble in Wroclaw, including throwing fireworks onto the field and displaying nationalist flags both of which happened again Tuesday.

On the field, Russia s rampant attack in the opening 4-1 win over the Czechs was largely muzzled by a well-organized Polish defense. At the other end, Robert Lewandowski was a constant threat.

Czech fans happy with victory over Greece

Posted:

To the delight of their supporters in the fan zone in Wroclaw, the Czech Republic kept alive their hopes of progress at Euro 2012 with an initially scintillating but ultimately nerve-wracking 2-1 win over Greece in Group A on Tuesday.

In an enterprising but niggling clash that stirred memories of the teams dramatic 2004 semi-final, decided in Greece s favour by a silver extra time goal, Petr Jiracek and Vaclav Pilar struck in the opening six minutes for the Czechs.

But despite captain Tomas Rosicky s graceful conducting of the game from midfield against a shaky Greek defence, the Czechs failed to add a third and, following the diminutive maestro s halftime withdrawal with a heel injury, had to ride their luck in face of a spirited Greek fightback.

When substitute Fanis Gekas capitalised on an error by goalkeeper Petr Cech to pull one back in the 53rd minute, the prospect of a draw or worse loomed for the Czechs.

But they dug in, survived some torrid moments and secured a first victory over Greece in four attempts as an independent nation.

"It was a nervous match for the fans. But we did play better than last time with Russia," said one Czech fan.

"This was a tormented match. When Bilek (Czech couch) use two forwards, than it would be completely different. This is much better football also for the viewers," said another.
