Obama administration damaged Pak-US relations: US senator

Posted:

Senator John McCain accused the Obama administration of needlessly damaging the US relationship with Pakistan and "antagonizing the Pakistanis" with an "in your face attitude."

In an interview with an American TV channel, McCain said that the administration s encouragement of India taking a more active role in Afghanistan while simultaneously criticizing Pakistan could be a recipe for disaster.

"To further antagonize Pakistan unnecessarily is not something I would particularly think is appropriate," said the top Republican on the Senate Armed Services Committee. "It s a very delicate situation, one in which I would be very careful what we say publicly," especially because the Pakistanis "are supporting organizations that are killing Americans."

"I would have nurtured this relationship with India sort of the way we have been for years, rather than sort of antagonizing the Pakistanis even more with this kind of in your face attitude," he said.

Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta told reporters in Afghanistan last week that the United States was "reaching the limits of our patience" with Pakistan, which he accused of providing a "safe haven" for the Haqqani network and other groups that launch attacks on U.S. forces.

A day before these remarks, Panetta stopped in New Delhi, where he encouraged the Indian government to take a "more active role" in training police and other reconstruction projects in Afghanistan.

McCain said that he has long supported a close relationship with India, but that he would "do it more quietly...(India) will be a very important ally to us in the future. And they are a democracy."

McCain said that while the Pakistanis often act counter to US interests, it "doesn t mean that we also cut off all relations with Pakistan because then it could become even more unstable and we could have even greater challenges since they have a nuclear inventory, among other things."

Egypt's court says parliament is dissolved

Posted:

Egypt s highest court on Thursday ordered the country s Islamist-dominated parliament dissolved, saying its election about six months ago was unconstitutional.

The Supreme Constitutional Court ruled Thursday that a third of the legislature was elected illegally. As a result, it says in its explanation of the ruling, "the makeup of the entire chamber is illegal and, consequently, it does not legally stand."

The explanation was carried by Egypt s official news agency and confirmed to The Associated Press by one of the court s judges, Maher Sami Youssef. The ruling means that new elections for the entire parliament will have to be held.

The law governing the parliamentary elections, held over a three-month period starting in November, was ruled unconstitutional by a lower court because it breached the principle of equality when it allowed party members to contest a third of seats set aside for independents. The remaining two thirds were contested by party slates.

In a separate ruling, the court said Hosni Mubarak s last prime minister, Ahmed Shafiq, could stay in the presidential race, rejecting a law passed by parliament last month that barred prominent figures from the old regime from running for office.

Shafiq will go head-to-head on Saturday and Sunday in a runoff against Mohammed Morsi of the Muslim Brotherhood, the country s strongest political group.

The ruling said the legislation was not based on "objective grounds" and "constitutes a violation of the principle of equality," leading to discrimination on "illogical grounds."

The Brotherhood stands to lose the most by the rulings since it controls just under half of all seats in the legislature and is likely not to do as well in the next election. Its popularity has declined since the legislative election over its failure to translate its parliamentary domination into real political power and its perception as a power hungry group more preoccupied with its own interests than national ones.

Nokia to cut 10,000 jobs worldwide

The Finnish cellphone maker also on Thursday announced personnel changes and said it has agreed to sell its luxury phone brand, Vertu.

The measures, aimed at additional cost savings of (euro) 1.6 billion ($2 billion) by the end of next year, will shut down research and development facilities in Ulm, Germany, and Burnaby, British Columbia. Nokia said it will also close its main Finnish manufacturing plant in Salo, with 850 layoffs, but will keep it as a research and development center.

“These planned reductions are a difficult consequence of the intended actions we believe we must take to ensure Nokia s long-term competitive strength,” CEO Stephen Elop said. “We are increasing our focus on the products and services that our consumers value most while continuing to invest in the innovation that has always defined Nokia.”

He said more than a third of the global job cuts, to be completed by the end of 2013, will be in Finland, but pledged to keep the company s corporate headquarters in Espoo, near the capital, Helsinki.

Nokia Corp. updated its outlook, saying that heavy competition would continue to hit its smartphone sector, but to a “somewhat greater extent than previously expected” and that the downturn would continue in the third quarter.

The loss-making company has been struggling against fierce competition from Apple Inc.’s iPhone and other makers using Google Inc.’s popular Android software, including Samsung Electronics Co. and HTC of Taiwan. It is also being squeezed in the low-end by Asian manufacturers making cheaper phones, such as China s ZTE.

Markets had been expecting Nokia to signal some improvement in its earnings expectations for this year after it joined forces with Microsoft Corp. in 2011, launching several Windows Phone 7 models, including its Lumia range. But its outlook bodes ill for the company that had been the No. 1 cellphone maker for 14 years.

The Espoo-based company said that although it plans “significant” cuts in operating expenses, it will continue to focus on smartphones as well as cheaper feature phones and intends to expand location-based services.

Nokia also announced that private equity group EQT VI had agreed to acquire Vertu, its global luxury phone brand, but that the Finnish company would keep a 10 percent minority shareholding. No financial terms were announced.

The company said it would also conduct an overhaul of its management team, with two long-time members of its top leadership - Mary McDowell, the head of the struggling mobile phones unit and Niklas Savander, head of the markets sector – leaving the company at the end of June. Chief marketing officer and brand manager Jerri DeWard, who joined Nokia in January 2011 will also step down.

Chris Weber, the current head of Nokia s U.S. operations, will take over sales and marketing on July 1.

In April, Nokia announced one of its worst quarterly results ever, blaming tough competition for a (euro) 929 million net loss in the first quarter as sales plunged, especially in the smartphone market.

Last year, it was still the world s top cellphone maker with annual unit sales of some 419 million devices, but in the last quarter of the year it posted a net loss of (euro) 1.07 billion, a marked reverse from the 745 million profit a year earlier.

Boston-based Strategy Analytics said Nokia had significantly lost market share in the first quarter to Samsung, which pushed it out as the world s largest seller of cellphones by volume, grabbing a 25 percent global market share against Nokia s 22 percent.

It has fared even worse in the smartphone sector against Samsung and Apple by falling to third place in the first quarter of the year with sales of 12 million units against Samsung s 44.5 million and Apple s 35 million.

“Nokia is significantly increasing its cost reduction target for devices and services in support of the streamlined strategy announced today,” said CFO Timo Ihamuotila. “With these planned actions, we believe our devices (and) services business has a clear path to profitability. Nokia intends to maintain its strong financial position while proceeding aggressively with actions aimed at creating shareholder value.”

Last year, Nokia announced more than 10,000 layoffs, aimed at cutting operating expenses by (euro) 1 billion ($1.31 billion) by 2013. 20-year old Briton hacks Fox, PBS websites

Authorities said the hackers were seeking to steal personal information and deface sites.

In a separate case, Cleary faces charges in the United Kingdom on allegations that he and others hacked a law enforcement agency, the Serious Organized Crime Agency, and various British music sites. He was taken into custody in March for breaching his bail conditions in that case, his attorney in that case has said.

The indictment filed Tuesday alleges Cleary and his co-conspirators would identify security vulnerabilities in companies computer systems and use them as opportunities to gain unauthorized access and, often, cause mayhem.

In one instance, the indictment alleges, Cleary conspired to steal the confidential information of people who registered to get information on auditions for the Fox talent competition "The X-Factor."

That hack was the first to be claimed by LulzSec, an offshoot of the larger hacking group Anonymous, in tweets about its international hacking spree that began in May 2011.

Later that month, LulzSec claimed to have hacked the website of the Public Broadcasting Service, where a phony news story was posted claiming the dead rapper Tupac Shakur was alive and living in New Zealand.

The post caused a stir on the site for "PBS NewsHour," an award-winning broadcast news show, and came after the network aired a documentary of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange that was deemed critical. PBS ombudsman at the time defended the program s treatment of Assange as "tough but proper."

The indictment also alleges LulzSec and Cleary hacked into the computer systems of Sony Pictures Entertainment Inc. in June 2011 to steal confidential information of users who had registered on the company s website.

Calls and emails to Fox, Sony and "The NewsHour" seeking comment and confirmation were not immediately returned Wednesday.
Cleary faces a maximum of 25 years if convicted on all charges.

An after-hours call to Cleary s legal representative in London was not returned. Power cuts and the plight of home-based workers

LAHORE: Making a large percentage of the informal workforce in Pakistan's economy, home-based workers are not only caught in an exploitative cycle of unregulated labour but their work is also now severely affected by power cuts.

At the mercy of their contractor, Shumaila Imran and two other women of her family struggle to stitch the upper part of shoes for rupees four to five per pair.

Shumaila is the wife of a daily wager who suffers from Hepaptitis B and he can hardly work in the summer. The women of the family try to make ends meet by stitching shoes, and one of them also works at a factory on minimum wage.

Many women in Shumaila's neighbourhood in Kot Lakhpat, Lahore stitch shoes to help their families get by.

According to the findings of a non-profit organisation, there were three million home based women labourers in urban Pakistan in 2010. As their numbers keep growing, so does the exploitation.

Shumaila and others like her are the invisible faces who chose not to riot, but continue to struggle silently.

Pakistani athlete Mubeen Akhtar passes away

LAHORE: Pakistani athlete Mubeen Akhtar died on Thursday after she sustained head injuries as a result of tripping over the staircase in her house, Express News reported.

Akhtar's family confirmed the mishap and requested the media to not probe into the matter much. She belonged to Lahore.

The 20-year-old athlete had run 100 and 200-metre races and had bagged three gold medals.

She was also declared the fastest athlete in Pakistan.

During the 44th National Athletics Championship, Akhtar clinched the women's 100-metre race after clocking 12.64 seconds.

Her coach, Bushra Parveen, while speaking to Express News said that her death was a great loss and it came at a time when she was about to achieve what she was striving for during the last 2-3 years.

"She was a very sensitive and innocent girl. She only had one aim – to be the best, to be a champion.

Correction: An earlier version of this article incorrectly stated that Akhtar participated in international championship in 2012. The player never participated in any international championship.

Cycling: Armstrong attacks USADA over doping charge

WASHINGTON: Seven-time Tour de France champion Lance Armstrong lashed out at the US Anti-Doping Agency on Wednesday, saying they want to brand him a drugs cheat based on “discredited” allegations.

“I have been notified that USADA, an organization largely funded by taxpayer dollars but governed only by self-written rules, intends to again dredge up discredited allegations dating back more than 16 years to prevent me from competing as a triathlete and try and strip me of the seven Tour de France victories I earned,” Armstrong said in a statement.

Armstrong said the witnesses cited by USADA were the same ones who spoke to federal investigators during a two-year probe which eventually ended without any criminal charges being brought.

“These charges are baseless, motivated by spite and advanced through testimony bought and paid for by promises of anonymity and immunity,” Armstrong said.

“Although USADA alleges a wide-ranging conspiracy extended over more than 16 years, I am the only athlete it has chosen to charge,” added Armstrong, who spoke of the agency’s “malice” and “star-chamber practices”.

The Washington Post reported Wednesday that USADA had written to Armstrong and seven others alleging the agency had collected blood samples from Armstrong in 2009 and 2010 that were “fully consistent with blood manipulation including EPO use and/or blood transfusions.”

According to the Post, which obtained a copy of the letter, USADA claims it has witnesses to the fact that Armstrong and five former cycling team associates — including Italian doctor Michele Ferrari and cycling team manager Johan Bruyneel — engaged in a doping conspiracy from 1998-2011.

USADA officials could not immediately be reached for comment on Wednesday.

Armstrong, who won the Tour de France from 1999-2005 and used his fame to fuel his charitable work for cancer awareness, has vehemently denied using performance-enhancing drugs during his cycling career.

He has never tested positive, but has been publicly accused by former teammates Floyd Landis and Tyler Hamilton — both admitted drugs cheats — of doping.

When US prosecutors dropped their probe of Armstrong and other cyclists without bringing charges in February, USADA said it would continue to probe allegations of doping in cycling and hoped to have access to the information gathered in the criminal probe.

“Unlike the US Attorney, USADA’s job is to protect clean sport rather than enforce specific criminal laws,” USADA chief executive Travis Tygart said in February.

Armstrong, however, accused the agency of a “vendetta”.
