U19 Asia Cup: Pakistan down India in thriller

KARACHI: Pakistan edged out archrivals India by one run in their U19 Asia Cup match to record their second successive win in the tournament.

Spurred by a defiant century by Sami Aslam, Pakistan posted a competitive 287 for seven in 50 overs before Mohammad Nawaz ensured India were contained in the final over of their innings at the Kinrara Academy Oval, Kuala Lumpur.

Needing 17 to win off the final six deliveries, Nawaz gave away 15 off the first five but kept his nerve to keep India at 286.

Earlier, after being put into bat, Pakistan recovered from early losses to post a good total with Aslam scoring a brilliant 121.

The opening batsman, who scored an unbeaten 82 in the eight-wicket victory over Nepal in the first match, hit 15 boundaries and one six in his 149-ball knock. Aslam put on 213 for the second wicket with Imamul Haq.

Haq chipped in with 88, while Nawaz (43) was the other notable scorer. RB Kalaria was the pick of the bowlers for India with figures of 4 for 54.

In reply, Vijay Zol led the Indian chase with an unbeaten 109 but failed to take his side past the finish line.

Captain Unmukt Chand (49) and Akshdeep Nath (42) were the other notable scorers for India. For Pakistan, Nawaz and Akhtar Waheed ended up with two wickets apiece.

In other matches, Afghanistan trounced Qatar by 191 runs, Nepal beat Malaysia by 107 runs, while Sri Lanka outclassed Bangladesh by 43 runs.

1st Test: Humiliated Pakistan stare at heavy defeat

GALLE:

Sri Lanka turned the screws on Pakistan in the first Test in Galle after battering the tourists with both bat and ball on the third day.

Sri Lanka bowled Pakistan out for 100 in the first-innings after making 472, with off-spinner Suraj Randiv grabbing four for 13 and left-armer Rangana Herath taking three for 30. The hosts surprisingly declined to enforce a follow-on despite a substantial lead of 372 and made 137 for five in their second knock when captain Mahela Jayawardene declared in the final hour.

Pakistan, set an improbable victory target of 510 runs, were then reduced to 36 for three by stumps after Nuwan Kulasekara dismissed stand-in captain Mohammad Hafeez and Taufeeq Umar.

Herath had Azhar Ali, leaving nightwatchman Saeed Ajmal (11) and Younus Khan (0) at the crease. The hosts, overwhelming favourites to go 1-0 up in the three-match series, have two days to force a result on the spin-friendly pitch despite forecasts of wet weather.

The Test has been marred by at least 10 contentious decisions by umpires Steve Davis of Australia and Ian Gould of England, with six of them going against the tourists. But the Decision Review System (DRS), which allows reviews by the television umpire, is not being used in this series.

Whatmore furious

Pakistan coach Dav Whatmore said he was surprised the DRS was not available when it was used for Sri Lanka's two home Tests against England in March and April. "They had it for England, so why not here?" Whatmore, who guided Sri Lanka to the World Cup title in 1996, asked reporters. "It does not seem right to me that you have it for one series and not for another.

"The DRS should be made compulsory. That will go a long way in helping a lot of things — anything that will help make correct decisions."

Asked if Pakistan will make an official complaint, Whatmore said he would not make a public comment on it. "Whatever I need to say will be done through official channels."

Earlier, Pakistan, who barely managed to surpass their lowest total against Sri Lanka of 90, were bundled out at the stroke of lunch after resuming the day at 48 for five.

The tourists were dealt a cruel blow within the first 30 minutes of play when Younus was given out leg-before for 29 by umpire Davis. Television replays showed a clear inside-edge off the bat on to the pad and a surprised Younus, who had scored 14 of the first 17 runs of the day, stood his ground before walking off.

There was little resistance offered by the tail as Pakistan were bundled out, conceding a hefty first-innings lead.

Govt proposes 0.6 m tons urea import

Posted:

The Federal government has proposed to import 0.6 million tons urea in next financial year starting from July 1, 2012 as energy situation is still not satisfactory indicating need of continuous import of urea, say sources.

A target of 4,174 thousand nutrient tones off take is projected for year 2012-13 to achieve the crop production target.

According to an official familiar with the development told Online Sunday that the country has ample stock of urea for the Kharif Season whereas the Committee for Review of Urea Situation in the end of August would take the decision whether urea will be imported for Rabi season or not.

Pakistan has sufficient capacity for urea production. However due to energy crisis, less supply of gas was available to the urea plants resulting in underutilization of plant capacity and less production. To fill the supply demand gap about 1.5 million tones of urea was imported during 2011-12.

The price of urea in international market was almost two times that in Pakistan because of provision of heavy subsidy. Subsidy on imported urea was around Rs 51 billion in 2011-12. Almost an equal amount was calculated on subsidized gas supplies to fertilizer manufacturing plant in that period.

On overall basis, the fertilizer off take in 2011-12 was 4.1 per cent less as compared to 2010-11 achievements and 7.5 per cent less against target.

Climate disasters mar poverty reduction steps: ADB

Posted:

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) reported that the rising incidences, severity of climate –related disasters are affecting progress to eradicate poverty and other development gains in the Asia and the Pacific region.

These empirical findings point to the urgent need for action by national and local governments and communities to strengthen their preparation and resilience to natural disasters, improve adaptive capacities, and implement climate mitigation measures. To achieve this, disaster management needs to be viewed not as a cost, but as a necessary investment for saving lives and livelihoods, reducing disaster threats to critical infrastructure, and promoting sustainable and inclusive development.

Recent devastating floods and storms in Asia and the Pacific—notably in the Philippines, Thailand, India, Pakistan and Australia—have vividly highlighted how severe and frequent climate-related natural disasters are wreaking havoc on lives, livelihoods and property. The increased frequency of intense floods and storms has been observed amid the specter of climate change. Confronting the many development and policy challenges of climate impacts is an immediate concern and not one for the distant future.

The ADB is organizing a one day confronting the Rising Threat of Climate Disasters programme on June28, 2012 in Philippines which will go a long way to address the rising challenges and risks from climate-related natural disasters.

The panel of experts will discuss the increasingly pressing issues of post-disaster compensation in reconstruction and recovery, needed pre-disaster investments in risk reduction, as well as innovative disaster finance measures being discussed in the wider development community.

Fewer announcements, more change on the power front: Ashraf

KARACHI: Calling power management his number one priority, newly elected Prime Minister Raja Pervaiz Ashraf said on Sunday that he would rather have people “feel the difference” themselves on this front, rather than the government making announcements in this regard.

"We have already held a meeting on this issue," he stated. "Law and order will be tackled in a similar manner," he added.

Ashraf, who is on a two-day trip to Sindh, visited Bhutto mausoleum in Garhi Khuda Bux and Mazar-e-Quaid in Karachi.

Responding to a question regarding writing a letter to the Swiss authorities to reopen graft cases against President Asif Ali Zardari, Ashraf said that his party does not want conflict between institutions and would work according to the constitution of the country.

Flanked by ministers and party members, Ashraf told media that no power can derail democracy in Pakistan.

"We respect all the institutions and we will always do so," he said.

He further said that some people thought that Pakistan's democratic process would be disrupted after Yousaf Raza Gilani's disqualification, however, Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) has come out of this turmoil by following its policy of reconciliation.

"Everyone needs to come together for the sake of Pakistan," he said.

He further said that anarchy would lead Pakistan to ruins and only democracy can save the country. Ashraf also promised to ensure free and fair elections in Pakistan.

My Favorite On-Screen Characters (Recent):
Jun 24th 2012, 18:31

There are some dramas that leave a very deep impression on our minds and hearts and we cannot help but watch them over and over again. Even if we don't watch these plays repeatedly we may find ourselves, unconsciously, comparing other plays with these particular dramas. In my opinion this does not hold true for dramas alone but it is also true for certain characters in these plays. Some characters stay with us for a very long time and we want to see more of such characters on-screen. I am going to talk about some very recent characters that left a lasting impression on my mind. If I go back in time there are many more such characters but for the sake of brevity I must limit myself to the recent ones.

What makes a character impressionable? In my opinion firstly, the way a character is conceived is very important. Secondly, dialogues matter a lot. Thirdly, how well that character is portrayed by the person playing it, is of great significance. If the right actor is not chosen for playing a certain role, all the efforts of the director and the writer may prove futile. Without further ado, here is a list of some characters which I am going to remember for a very long time. Some made me cry and others made me laugh till my belly hurt but all of them are very special.

1. Sami Sahib From Durrr-e-Shehwar:

I am certain most of my readers are well acquainted with this character, since Sami Sahib was the soul of the hit serial Durr-e-Shehwar. For those of you who do not know. Sami Sahib was Durr-e-Shehwar's father in the play; the role was acted out brilliantly by Mohammad Ahmed.
This character was wise, fair and an extremely loving one. A father who went all out to save his daughter's marriage and saved many more relationships in the process. The letters written by Sami Sahib to his daughter and the conversations he had with her will stay with many of us for a very long time.

2. Mumtaz (Momo) From Bulbulay:

This is another extremely well-done character that needs no introduction. Hina Dilpazar plays Momo in the comic sitcom Bulbulay. Everything about Momo from the body language to the expressions is just hilarious. Interestingly enough, this character was not even a regular part of the show till the 15th episode. This would definitely be another character that has been very nicely conceived and acted out.

3. Mehru From Ashk:

Till now Ashk may not have been an instant hit and many people have problems with some of the characters in the play but I find the character of Mehru to be very impressive. Resham has done a remarkable job in portraying the character in a very apt manner.

4. Mehru From Zard Mausam:

Sania Saeed plays Mehru, a mother of four children, three her own and one step-daughter. Although this play may not have gotten the attention, till now, that it deserves. In my opinion, Mehru's character is the star of the show, excellently acted out by Sania Saeed.

5. Saima Chaudhry From Annie Ki Aye Gi Baraat:

Honestly speaking this play is not one of my favorites but whenever I watch it, it is because I need a dose of Saima Chaudhry's wit and humor. Bushra Ansari fits perfectly in the role of Saima Chaudhry, the designer from Faisalabad who has a very colorful personality.

6. Durr-e-Shehwar (old) From Durr-e-Shehwar:

Since I am a die-hard fan of this play I could not help but put two of the characters from this play on my list. While the young Shehwar was played brilliantly too but in my opinion Samina Peerzada did an outstanding job of bringing the character of older Durr-e-Shehwar to life. This is another character that I will not forget for a very long time.

Share with us the characters that have rocked your world and the reasons why they are so special.
