U19 Asia Cup: Pakistan down India in thriller




KARACHI: Pakistan edged out archrivals India by one run in their U19 Asia Cup match to record their second successive win in the tournament.


Spurred by a defiant century by Sami Aslam, Pakistan posted a competitive 287 for seven in 50 overs before Mohammad Nawaz ensured India were contained in the final over of their innings at the Kinrara Academy Oval, Kuala Lumpur.


Needing 17 to win off the final six deliveries, Nawaz gave away 15 off the first five but kept his nerve to keep India at 286.


Earlier, after being put into bat, Pakistan recovered from early losses to post a good total with Aslam scoring a brilliant 121.


The opening batsman, who scored an unbeaten 82 in the eight-wicket victory over Nepal in the first match, hit 15 boundaries and one six in his 149-ball knock. Aslam put on 213 for the second wicket with Imamul Haq.


Haq chipped in with 88, while Nawaz (43) was the other notable scorer. RB Kalaria was the pick of the bowlers for India with figures of 4 for 54.


In reply, Vijay Zol led the Indian chase with an unbeaten 109 but failed to take his side past the finish line.


Captain Unmukt Chand (49) and Akshdeep Nath (42) were the other notable scorers for India. For Pakistan, Nawaz and Akhtar Waheed ended up with two wickets apiece.


In other matches, Afghanistan trounced Qatar by 191 runs, Nepal beat Malaysia by 107 runs, while Sri Lanka outclassed Bangladesh by 43 runs.
