Amir Khan, Garcia eye big future after title showdown

Posted:

Britain s Amir Khan and undefeated American Danny Garcia meet in a light-welterweight title unification showdown on Saturday with each fighter seeking a victory to launch him to another level.

Khan, 26-2 with 18 knockouts, will defend the World Boxing Association title he was given earlier this week while Garcia, 23-0 with 14 knockouts, defends his World Boxing Council crown.

Khan lost the WBA and International Boxing Federation titles last December in a controversial split decision to Lamont Peterson in the American s hometown of Washington, but protested the outcome over several issues.

A rematch was booked but Peterson came back positive in random doping tests and the fight was called off, with Garcia entering the picture and Khan coming into the fight after 16 weeks of training and with his WBA title returned.

"It s thrilling," Khan said. "Having two world titles makes the fight even bigger.

"We re more than ready for this fight. That (extra training time) maybe is going to give us more experience and in a way help me a little bit more because I ve spent more time in the gym."

For Garcia, Khan would be the biggest victim on his unblemished record and could signal a jump into the welterweight division and such stars as unbeaten Floyd Mayweather and Filipino icon Manny Pacquiao.

"A win would be big," Garcia said. "It would put me in a new category, superstar category, and I m pretty sure that we re going to get the job done.

"It makes me train harder, keeps me focused, keeps me motivated, but I don t feel like it s too soon. If you re the world champion who are you supposed to fight? Are you supposed to fight bums and pad your record?

"If you re the world champion you re supposed to fight the best people in their prime and that s what I want to do. I want to build my legacy."

Khan is cautious about talk of future plans, having lost more time than he might have expected at light-welterweight, but a rise to welterweight and a potential date against Mayweather, could be in his future with a victory.

"I m at my peak now where I like to be very professional because in the future there are some super-fights out there, so it s all about winning this fight and not really looking too far ahead," Khan said.

"It s maybe time after this fight to move up to the next weight category and go for the new challenges. When you are world champion and you re at the top of your game, you want to fight the best."

I don t think so," she said. "But I saw it as my duty to make my statement. Because otherwise I would not know why I became an artist in the first place."

The short display of 15 minutes took month of preparation. The loaves of bread were donated by a bakery chain, technicians made sure that everything went according to plan and no art fan was hurt in the process.

Boxing: Khan vows to knock Garcia out

In his fight today, Amir Khan has vowed to knock Danny Garcia out, according to the Daily Mail.

His remarks came after Garcia's father, Angel Garcia, made unsavoury comments about WBA champion Khan's Pakistani heritage during the main pre-fight press conference.

"I promise you – I've never said this at a press conference – I will knock Danny Garcia out and win the title," said Khan. "That will shut his dad up. I cannot wait until after the fight, when I've knocked his son out and I'm standing here with the titles. It's funny when he said he's never seen a Pakistani fight. He's going to see a Pakistani fight, and knock his son out. I can't wait to get in there."

‘Some PCB officials want the team to lose’

KARACHI:

It seems like Shoaib Akhtar cannot stay away from the headlines despite being out of action.

The former Pakistan fast-bowler, who in his day could prove to be a problem child for the cricket board, ignited another controversy after he questioned the integrity of 'some' of the officials, saying that they wanted the national team to lose.

Akhtar, who announced his retirement during the World Cup last year, said some of the officials at the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) were not well-wishers of the team, adding that 'politics' always had a negative impact on the performance.

"It's the truth — some people in the PCB don't want Pakistan to win," the former pacer said while speaking to Express News. "There's too much politics. Our board also becomes the enemy of the player the day he becomes captain of the team. The PCB should take help from former cricketers rather taking revenge or settling old scores."

Akhtar's career had been a roller-coaster ride as he remained in and out of the team due to various controversies, injuries and problems of ill-discipline.

The former paceman was also banned on various occasions including a five-year ban when Dr Nasim Ashraf was the PCB chief.

'Lee, a super athlete'

Meanwhile, the former fast-bowler praised his Australian counterpart Brett Lee who announced his retirement from international cricket.

"Lee without any doubt was a super athlete. He was a great fast-bowler. I know this for a fact that he was playing with pain since the last decade. It is unfortunate that people and managements don't understand the problems of a fast bowler.

"They keep on fighting with injuries throughout their careers. They cannot serve for long due to repeated injuries. The world is already facing a dearth of fast bowlers and Lee's retirement will leave a vacuum."

'Measures need to be taken'

Akhtar, who was nagged by several injuries in his day, said that measures needed to be taken to protect the art. "Fast-bowling is not a normal job, it's abnormal. The number of fast-bowlers is diminishing and they need to be safeguarded. I have said repeatedly that the International Cricket Council should remove the laws and restriction on fast-bowlers."

Akhtar to form pool of 50 pacers

Meanwhile, Akhtar said he was working to form a pool of 50 young pacemen who could serve the country in the long-run.

"Every board say our country is full of talent. But I don't see anyone because we've not got a good fast-bowler for a long time."

"The board humiliates the ones who have talent which is having adverse effects. The youngsters who take inspiration from their heroes are not coming forward after seeing what is being done to their heroes."

He said he will launch a country-wide talent hunt for fast bowlers.

"I will go to the outskirts to find talent. I will mentor and promote them through media and in other ways.

Actors Who Refuse To Age.
Jul 13th 2012, 13:59

Hey don't take it in a negative way, I actually say this in a very positive manner, some of our television actors seem to have been dodging age for a very long time now. Some of them look like they have not aged more than a couple of years in the past decade and others just seem to be getting prettier and even more polished with time. Here is a list of some such actors, would love to hear what you people have to say about these actors and add to the list other names if you can think of any.

1. Mahnoor Baloch:

I think Mahnoor Baloch has done a marvelous job of staying in shape and looking stunning all through these years.

2. Faisal Rehman:

Another actor who refuses to let his age show, he may have lost his 'boyish' looks but he still looks great.

3. Seemi Pasha:

This woman is as chic as she is versatile, a great model and actor, Seemi Pasha knows how to look great year after year.

4. Zeba Bakhtiyaar:

Another very beautiful lady who still has that doll face which she had years back, it is always a treat to see her on-screen.

5. Nauman Ejaz:

His weight may falter every now and then but overall he has always looked great, it is only fair that he should be on this list.

6. Bushra Ansari:

Bushra Ansari has to be one of those actors who look prettier and more polished with time. Great writer, great actor, great comedian and great looks!

7. Sajjid Hassan:

Yes, he may have lost his hair and like other actors did not opt for a hair transplant but he still looks tip-top.

8. Qavi Khan:

Of course he has aged from what he was way back when he started television but talk about aging gracefully. I actually find myself envying Qavi Khan's skin and overall he has done a great job of maintaining himself.

9. Adnan Siddiqui:

He has not only managed to keep himself from aging but this man obviously knows the art of aging gracefully.

10: Hamayun Saeed:

Hamayun Saeed has looked the same from the past decade or so, I remember the first time I saw him on-screen back in the 1990s and he still looks the same.

I hope you had fun reading the list, waiting for your feedback!
