Business

Unsung heroes: Entrepreneurs are the saviours of nations

Malik Ahmad Jalal

"Your problem is solved," with those words Sir Adamjee Dawood, one of Pakistan's greatest entrepreneurs, saved the country from financial collapse a mere 13 days after its independence. Though many entrepreneurs have played a pivotal role in the country's creation, their sacrifices have been forgotten and their accomplishments erased from history.

A top-down approach: Lend a hand to the 'bottom of the pyramid'

Saad Amanullah Khan

The phrase "Bottom of the Pyramid" (BOP) was first coined by US president Eisenhower in 1932 and it was not until 1998 when two prominent US professors defined it as people earning less than $2 a day. This helped define the largest yet poorest socio-economic class, making up roughly 2.8 billion people or 40% of the world's population.

Sheep: Following the herd?

Hani Taha

To say that the concept of ready-to-wear revolutionised and propelled the fashion scene in Pakistan would be an understatement. What it did was render the traditional shalwar kameez extinct and create a whole new business model for convenience clothing for women. Sure, Teejays needs to be credited for heralding the concept, but it is brands like Khaadi, Ego, Daaman and Sheep that took the risk of introducing separates — an essential prerequisite to fashion retail world over and created a huge market for off-the-rack clothing.

Pakistan not serious in elimination of Taliban: US senator

Posted:

The Taliban can be defeated militarily in Afghanistan but the job is not done, a key U.S. senator said on Sunday, noting that the insurgents still control more than a third of the populated areas of the country and have a "safe harbor" in Pakistan.

Senator Dianne Feinstein, chairwoman of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, told a US TV channel that Pakistan is key to defeating the Taliban in both countries and expressed frustration that Pakistan has failed to deprive them of a safe haven in the rugged mountain areas along its Afghan border.

"Militarily, I think the Taliban are not going to beat us," she said. But the Taliban "have a safe harbor in Pakistan and the Pakistanis are doing nothing to abate that safe haven," Feinstein said.

What "the Taliban has done is insinuate itself in a shadowy presence, with shadow governors. They controlled over a third of the land which people live. They expanded into the north, into the northeast," Feinstein said.

"And while we were there in one province, they closed 14 schools in 17 districts and then they killed five education officials and wounded others," she told a US TV channel.

"What this does is demonstrate to many of us that the Taliban is just waiting to come back" when U.S. troops leave the country over the next few years, Feinstein said.

City wins English title for first time in 44 years

Posted:

In the final moments of the Premier League s most dramatic season yet, Manchester City had just enough time to produce one final, stunning twist.

With the club s title hopes fading by the second, with fans anxiously tearing at their hair in the stands as a stubborn Queens Park Rangers clung to a surprising 2-1 lead after 90 minutes, City threw all of its attacking might forward to secure one of English football s greatest comebacks.

Edin Dzeko and Sergio Aguero both scored in extra time to clinch a 3-2 victory that secured the club s first league title since 1968, finishing ahead of crosstown rival Manchester United on goal difference.

"It s a crazy finish for a crazy season," City manager Roberto Mancini said. "I ve never seen a final like this."
No one had.

After a season where the balance of the title race shifted back and forth between the Manchester clubs numerous times, City looked to have thrown it all away by letting 10-man QPR rally from a goal down to take the lead in the second half, while United completed a 1-0 win at Sunderland.

But Dzeko headed in an equalizer in the second minute of stoppage time to give the City fans hope, and Aguero then clinched the title when he slalomed through the QPR blasted the ball into the net. As Mancini raised his hands and ran along the touchline, Aguero the son-in-law of Diego Maradona tore his shirt off in jubilation before he was mobbed by his teammates.

"He was crying on the floor," City captain Vincent Kompany said. "All the guys were pouring their eyes out. You don t see strong personalities like that showing their emotion so often."

Moments earlier, United had completed its victory at Sunderland and were lingering on the northeast pitch ready to start celebrating title No. 20, waiting for the final result of the City game.

Instead, a party 44 years in the making burst into life back in the blue half of Manchester as fans flooded the City pitch and exploded blue smoke canisters.

"Miracles do happen in Manchester," Kompany said. "This time it s on this side of the road."

Now United on the other side of the road will have to live with the fact that the club once dismissed by manager Alex Ferguson as a "noisy neighbor" is now a serious threat to its supremacy.

United had won 19 titles since City last won the English championship for just the second time in 1968. City has since had to climb back into the Premier League from the depths of the third tier in 1999, but became a credible title challenger after a takeover by Abu Dhabi s Sheikh Mansour, who has invested more than $1 billion into the club over three years hoping to build a powerhouse.

"It was really important to start winning this championship," City manager Roberto Mancini said. "Manchester City can have a big future now."

The two Manchester rivals have traded places atop the standings all season, but City had to overturn an eight-point lead United held five weeks ago to finish on top.

"We didn t deserve to lose, we had a lot of chances and we deserved to win the game and championship," Mancini said. "It s fantastic for the club and the supporters after 44 years."

It was the first time the English title was decided in such dramatic circumstances since 1989, when Arsenal and Liverpool finished level on points and had the same goal difference, and the Gunners won the title on total goals.

Federer wins Madrid Masters, takes number two spot

Posted:

Roger Federer put his best fighting tennis on display to produce a 3-6, 7-5, 7-5 victory over Tomas Berdych on Sunday to capture a third Madrid Masters title and depose Rafael Nadal as world number two.

The Swiss, with 16 Grand Slam titles, will now stand behind Novak Djokovic on Monday on the ATP list after sending Nadal back to third with his winning performance on the controversial blue clay laid down at the Caja Magica.

"I feel amazing," said Federer, who came through on his fourth match point as Berdych ploughed a forehand into the net.

"This is a tough tournament and a brutal draw. I m playing well and I m so happy to win this once again."

The 30-year-old went level with Nadal on 20 career titles at Masters 1000 level, with both men sharing the overall record.

Federer, playing in his 104th ATP final, won his 74th title and fourth of the season.

He now stands 11-4 in head-to-head encounters with Berdych, who had beaten him in three of their five most recent matches.

But Federer was having no more of that scenario as he turned in victory in just over two and a half hours with a dozen aces, 44 winners and 30 unforced errors.

Berdych saved three match points in the final game before going down.

"We both played a nice match, but Roger showed why he s the star," said the Czech. "He was able to win in the conditions, it was well done."

Berdych claimed the first set as he dominated with 14 winners and two unforced errors, only to quickly find himself on the other end of a Federer fightback in the second.

The Swiss third seed missed on a set point while serving at 5-3 to level, but stayed in the chase, finally taking the set 7-5 as Berdych double-faulted on set point.

In the third, Federer rallied from 0-30 in his first three service games, then moved into position with a break for 5-3, which was finally achieved after Berdych saved three break points with consecutive aces but then sent over two double-faults in a row to give away the game

Federer still could not close as he was broken in the next game, 5-4.

The Swiss hung tough through the next two games on serve before finally putting away the win on his fourth match point.

"It s a great feeling to win any event, but especially another here in Madrid," added Federer.

"This is a tough tournament. It was tough to move on the clay but you just get on with it and try to make the best of the situation.

"The level of play was good this week and I m looking forward to the next few weeks."

In an unexpected post-match ceremony, American film star Will Smith came down from his spectator position to present the winner with the suit he wore in his latest Men in Black film.

The American also said a few words to the delighted crowd in Spanish.

Formula One: 16 hurt in Williams garage blaze

A total of 16 people were injured, one with severe burns, when a fire erupted in the Williams team garage on Sunday in the aftermath of Pastor Maldonado s victory in the Spanish Grand Prix.

Maldonado s win was his first in Formula One, in just his 24th race, and the first by a Venezuelan.

It was also the team s first victory since the 2004 Brazilian Grand Prix and came on the weekend of team founder Sir Frank Williams 70th birthday on Saturday.

In a statement, the Catalan regional government said that one person was airlifted to hospital with serious burns while five others were taken to a local hospital for the effects of smoke inhalation.

Ten more were treated at the Circuit de Catalunya medical centre after the incident caused, it was reported, by a fuel fire at the back of the team garage as they were packing up to leave.

The Caterham team said four of their mechanics were among those taken to the circuit medical centre, one with a minor hand injury and three for smoke inhalation.

The fire left a cloud over the team after their first dramatic and emotional victory in eight years, Maldonado driving resolutely to hold off a challenge by two-time champion Fernando Alonso of Ferrari to win the race.

"It s a wonderful day for me and the team. An unforgettable race," said Maldonado, who was hoisted onto the shoulders of Alonso and Kimi Raikkonen, who finished third, when the drivers appeared on the podium.

His win was a great result for Williams, but the team founder was among those whose celebrations were cut short when the wheelchair-bound principal was assisted from the team garage because of the post-race fire.

Na takes a 1-shot lead at Players Championship

Posted:

Kevin Na birdied the 18th hole to complete one of only three rounds without a bogey at The Players Championship on Saturday, giving him one-shot lead over Matt Kuchar as they chase the richest prize on the PGA Tour a five-year exemption and a spot in all the majors.

For all his practice swings and waggles, even purposely missing the ball so he could start over, Na pieced together a brilliant 4-under 68 for a three-round total of 12-under 204. He finished with two birdies on the last three holes to edge ahead of Kuchar (69), who hit into the water at the island-green 17th.

"I know how to play under pressure," Na said. "I ve won before. I ve been in situations like this. I ve got to take everything I ve learned and do my best."

Rickie Fowler, coming off his first PGA Tour win last week at Quail Hollow, was dynamic as ever as he shot up the leaderboard. Fowler didn t make a bogey until the last hole but still had the best score of the third round with a 66 and was two shots behind.

He is trying to become the first player since David Duval in 1997 to win his first two PGA Tour titles in consecutive weeks.

Texas Open champion Ben Curtis also played bogey-free. He just didn t have as many birdies, missing from inside 10 feet on his last two holes for a 70. He was five shots behind, along with former Masters champion Zach Johnson (73).

Tiger Woods never came close to getting into contention, though he gave himself plenty of chances. The card shows two birdies, two bogeys and a 72 that left him 10 shots out of the lead going into the final round. It was hard for him to digest.

"I played well today and didn t get anything out of that round," Woods said. "It was probably the most solid I ve hit the golf ball all year, actually. Even though I hit a couple off line, they were just hit dead flush. I just got nothing out of the round."

Kuchar went eight consecutive holes without a par six birdies and two bogeys to seize control on a windy day at Sawgrass. But he slightly missed on his tee shot at the par-3 17th and never came close to land. He did well to hit his third shot from the drop area to 5 feet to escape with bogey.

"It was exciting," Kuchar said. "A lot of birdies and a lot more bogeys than I normally make. But I knew today was going to be a tricky day. I knew there were going to be a lot of bogeys. I knew there were dangers around every corner."

Na is considered among the slowest players in golf, and he was given a bad time on the 16th hole for taking too long to hit his shot. One more bad time and he would have become the first PGA Tour player in 20 years to be given a one-shot penalty.

He was informed of his bad time, and was told his appeal was denied after hitting onto the 17th green. Then, Na drilled his tee shot after only three waggles on the 18th hole, back off only once and then hit his approach to 15 feet to set up his last birdie.

Na said he is changing his swing and still struggles with balance, making it hard for him to get comfortable over the ball. He knows the world is watching, and he realizes it makes for painful viewing from living rooms and behind the ropes.
