Wiggins extends Tour de France lead

Posted:

Overall leader Bradley Wiggins took another important step towards his dream of becoming the first Briton crowned in the Tour de France with an emphatic victory in the race s first major time trial on Monday.

The Team Sky leader clocked 51 minutes and 24 seconds on the winding 41.5-km course between Arc et Senans and Besancon, to leave all his major rivals gasping for air. Wiggins beat his team mate Christopher Froome, who surprised many with his time, by 35 seconds.

He beat Olympic and multiple world champion Fabian Cancellara of Switzerland, the prologue winner, by 57 seconds.

U.S. rider Tejay Van Garderen set an early quick time but Wiggins beat it by 66 seconds and, most importantly, defending Tour champion Cadel Evans saw his 10 second deficit stretch to 1:53 overall before the first rest day in the race and with the Alps looming.

Vincenzo Nibali, never a specialist against the clock, limited the damage by finishing eighth, 2:07 adrift, but the Italian is already 2:23 behind Wiggins in the general classification.

Most Tour contenders made it clear a first survey of their chances would be made after the ninth stage but the main lesson learned was that Wiggins s leading rival in the two weeks to come could be in his own ranks.

New crisis looms in Egypt over legislature's fate

Posted:

A new showdown loomed in Egypt as the country s highest court stood by its ruling that dissolved parliament last month, challenging the new Islamist president s plans to reconvene the lower chamber in defiance of the military.

If he goes ahead, Mohammed Morsi would be taking a dramatic step away from the outreach that characterized his first days in office. It s a tough fight, though, and the president could lose it along with more of his already diminished powers.

The military, which handed power to Morsi on June 30 after ruling the country for 16 months, delivered a thinly-veiled warning to the president, saying it would continue to support the country s "legitimacy, constitution and law" language that means it will not stand by and watch the rulings of the country s top court ignored or breached.

At the same time, the Supreme Constitutional Court sent out a clear signal that it will not bow to Morsi s wish, saying in a statement after an emergency meeting on Monday that its June 14 ruling to invalidate the Islamist-dominated parliament was final and binding.

"Morsi s move sets the stage for a potentially very serious political and constitutional crisis," said Michael W. Hanna, an expert on Egypt from the New York-based Century Foundation.

Morsi, through his spokesman Yasser Ali, insisted his decision to reconvene the 508-seat chamber on Tuesday was an "assertion of the popular will." His presidential decree also calls for new parliamentary elections after a new constitution is adopted, something that is not expected before the end of the year in effect according legitimacy to a legislature the country s highest court ruled to be invalid.

In its ruling last month, the supreme court determined that a third of parliament s members were illegally elected under a law that allowed candidates from political parties to compete for seats that had been set aside for independents. Based on that verdict, the then-ruling military disbanded the house, in which Islamists controlled more than 70 percent of the seats.

In the days that followed, the generals pushed through a series of decrees that gave themselves legislative powers, as well as control over the drafting of a new constitution and the national budget. It also stripped Morsi of significant presidential powers.

The high court was to rule Tuesday the same day parliament was set to reconvene on three cases questioning the legality of the president s order. The dispute over the fate of parliament has divided the nation just as Egyptians were looking forward to a semblance of stability after the tumult of the 17 months since the ouster of longtime authoritarian ruler Hosni Mubarak. Egypt has seen a dramatic surge in crime, deadly street protests, a faltering economy and seemingly non-stop strikes, sit-ins and demonstrations.

Some of the youth groups who engineered the uprising that toppled Mubarak sided with Morsi, viewing his move as an attempt to curtail the military s powers. Others saw it as another bid by Morsi s Muslim Brotherhood to pursue its own interests rather than the nation s.

Summer events: Horses dance, race at tourism festival

BAHAWALPUR:

A dancing horses festival was held in Laal Sohanra National Park on Sunday.

The event, organised by the Tourism Development Corporation of Punjab (TDCP), was attended by a large audience amidst heat.

As many as 18 horses were presented in the festival. They had been brought from across the district.

TDCP Manager Shahid Mahmood told The paksarzameen.tk that many more entries had been received for participation in the event, but only the best performers were chosen. The event is held every year, he said.

Divisional Forest Officer Mian Fida Hussain was the chief guest. He inaugurated the event that began with the regional dances to the beat of drums, followed by camel dance that was largely appreciated.

Rana Basharat Ali's horse, Chaand, of 35-BC near Laal Sohanra, won the first place. It was presented the best-dance-of-the-event award. Malik Daado Guddan's horse, Jalo, came second.

Ali told The paksarzameen.tk that he had trained the horse with great care. He said it took years to teach the animal dance steps. He said he was certain that Chaand would win.

"I have spent more money and time on my horse than my children," he said.

A horse race was also arranged at the event. It was won by Syed Muhammad Abbas Shah's horse, Raju, of Dera Nawab Sahab.

Shah claimed that his horse was also the strongest among the competitive horses. He said he had spent a lot of time training it.

"I used to take it to the empty grounds and practice racing on regular basis," he said.

As a token of appreciation, traditional turbans were distributed among the riders.

I am ready to work with Whatmore: Javed Miandad

KARACHI:

Former Pakistan captain Javed Miandad, who has been given the task to mentor the junior and senior teams' batsmen, has no issues in working with head coach Dav Whatmore, adding that they share a common interest of improving the players' performance.

Whatmore was given an additional role of a batting coach and the Pakistan Cricket Board Chairman (PCB) Zaka Ashraf recently asked Miandad to work with the players ahead of major tournaments including the World Twenty20 and next month's U19 World Cup in Australia. The former captain, who also serves as PCB's director-general, was given a similar task in 2010 by the Ijaz Butt-led board but had reportedly refused to work under then-coach Waqar Younis, adding that he only wanted to be answerable to the chairman.

However, the situation seems to be different this time around.

"Let's not be negative," said the former captain. "Whatmore and I have been assigned tasks by the board. We have one aim and that is to bring an improvement. I respect Whatmore and will have no issues in working with him. My priority is to serve my country and I will be happy to work in any capacity."

Miandad, who scored 8,832 runs in 124 Tests and 7,381 in 233 One-Day Internationals, is planning on holding extensive sessions with the batsmen.

"I've given tips to various national teams recently but this time I will make a schedule of each player and work accordingly."

Meanwhile, Abbas, Pakistan's hope for a medal in the 67-kg category, has been training in Iran as he aims to qualify for the World Championship.

"I will be defending my title once again," said Abbas. "It's a warm-up event for me because I am focusing on the World Championship."

Meera & Shoaib Akhtar Scandal
Jul 9th 2012, 11:00

Meera who was all set to get married on July 21 to her fiancé Naveed Shahzad, has called off her marriage due to her in-laws false accusations about her. Meera feels her ex-boyfriend Shoaib Akhtar is a cause of her in-laws bad behaviour towards her.

She said, "The main cause for this incident is my ex-boyfriend Shoaib Akhtar. Shoaib ne Naaved ki family ko bhadkaya, mere baare main bahut bura bhula kaha. I was seeing Shoaib for almost one-and-a-half years, but when I found he was cheating on me by flirting with other women, I broke up with him. I even wanted to marry him but he was never serious". On the other hand Shoaib Akhtar denied the fact and said, "I was never romantically involved with Meera".

Meera said there is no use getting married to a family who don't respect women and want cheap publicity through the media.
