Enrichment not a step towards a bomb: Ahmadinejad

<p>&nbsp;</p><p>Iran&nbsp;s enrichment of uranium to 20 percent &quot;is our right&quot; and &quot;is not a step towards a bomb,&quot; President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said on Wednesday in an interview with the satellite television network France 24.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>The enrichment activity, which world powers are trying to curb in fraught talks with Iran, &quot;is one of our rights in terms of international law,&quot; Ahmadinejad said.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>&quot;There have been lies about our programme.... Enriching uranium to 20 percent is not a step towards a bomb,&quot; he said, speaking in Farsi through translators.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Ahmadinejad added that world powers &quot;should provide us with uranium at a 20 percent enrichment level, but so far they have not done so.&quot;</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>As a result, he said, Iran &quot;decided to move forward on our own&quot; with enrichment.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>His remarks on Iran being supplied with 20 percent enriched uranium as translated into English for the channel offered a different formulation.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Ahmadinejad hinted, however, that Iran could be open to stopping 20 percent enrichment -- if world powers offered significant concessions.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>&quot;If others do not wish for us to fully benefit from this right, they need to explain to us why. And also they have to say what they are willing to give to the Iranian people in exchange.&quot;</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>The UN Security Council has issued six resolutions demanding Iran suspend all uranium enrichment. It has also imposed four sets of sanctions on Iran on the issue. Western powers have hardened those measures with their own tough economic sanctions.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>The five UN Security Council permanent members plus Germany -- the so-called P51 group -- are especially intent on getting Iran to stop enrichment to 20 percent as it is just a few technical steps short of bomb-grade 90-percent.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Iran, which insists its nuclear programme is peaceful, enriches uranium to 3.5 percent for its Bushehr atomic energy plant in the south of the country, and says it needs 20 percent uranium to produce medical isotopes at its Tehran research reactor.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>The issue is at the heart of the talks with the P51 that are to resume in Moscow on June 18-19.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Ahmadinejad said that, as much as Iran would like to see the nuclear dispute resolved, &quot;we do not expect to see a miracle&quot; in Moscow.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>The last round of talks, in Baghdad last week, nearly collapsed as it became clear that there was a gulf between the two sides.<br />&nbsp;</p>

US not convinced Dr Afridi had links with militants

Car accident: FIR names cricketer Mohammad Sami for rash driving, damage claim

LAHORE: The Gulberg Police in Lahore have registered an FIR against cricketer Mohammad Sami and his three friends under charges of mischief, causing damage and rash driving, late Wednesday night.

According to the officer on duty at the police station, they have registered an FIR, number 756/12, under section 427 and 279 of Pakistan Penal Code (PPC) on the complaint of Advocate Farrukh Ilyas Cheema. No one has been arrested so far.

PPC 427: Mischief causing damage to the amount of 50 rupees:

Whoever commits mischief and thereby causes loss or damage to the amount of 50 rupees or upwards, shall be punished with imprisonment of either description for a term which may extend to two years, or with fine, or with both.

279. Rash driving or riding on a public way:

Whoever drives any vehicle, or rides, on any public way in a manner so rash or negligent as to endanger human life, or to be likely to cause hurt or injury to any other person, shall be punished with imprisonment of either description for a term which may extend to two years or with fine which may extend to three thousand rupees or with both.

Talking to The paksarzameen.tk, complainant Cheema said that he had lodged an FIR against Sami for misbehaving with him and causing damage to his car while rashly driving his car at Hussain Chowk, Gulberg on May 26.

Narrating the incident, he said that Sami and his friend Mohammad Shakil Gondal were returning from MM Alam Road in a Toyota Corolla – AHJ 583 – when they hit his car– LEF 5734 Coure – from behind at Hussain Chowk, damaging the car.

The advocate added that initially Sami, his friend Shaukat Bhatti and three other unidentified men laughed at him mockingly and only after he pressured the cricketer for compensation, the latter offered his Computerised National Identity Card (CNIC) as surety, saying that he would pay him the next day.

The complainant further recounted that Sami again misbehaved with him the next day when the former called him up, demanding the compensation and instead said that he would pay him after returning from the Sri Lanka tour. However, Sami’s freind, Bhatti delivered a cheque of Rs 30,000, payable at Dawood Islamic Bank, to Cheema and retrieved Sami's CNIC in return.

However, Cheema said that he received a call from Sami the next day demanding the return of the cheque. Cheema said that the cricketer allegedly misbehaved with him. On this, he decided to file an FIR against the cricketer.

Cheema said that on Thursday he would file another FIR against the fast bowler for threatening him, claiming that he also has a record of threats made by the player.

Sami is making a comeback, after a long hiatus from the national side, and is hopeful of being featured in the series against Sri Lanka scheduled to start from June 1. The 31 year old fast bowler from Karachi, was dropped from the team in 2010 due to unimpressive performance.

However, a string of good spells in domestic cricket impressed the selectors who handed him a chance to don the green shirt in the T20, ODI and Test matches.

French Open: Aisam, Rojer pass 1st test

PARIS:

Aisamul Haq Qureshi launched a last-ditch effort to qualify for the Olympics as he and doubles partner Jean-Julien Rojer won their opening French Open match 6-3, 6-2 against the French pair of Jonathan Dasnieres De Veigy and Nicolas Renavand.

Aisam, who is also partnering Czech Republic's Andrea Hlavackova in the mixed doubles, needs to gather 1,470 ranking points in order to get back in the top-10 and be eligible for the London event.

Aisam and Rojer, following the easy win, will now face Bjorn Phau of Germany and Adil Shamasuddin of Canada in the next round.

The Pakistani, however, went down in the first round of the mixed doubles event with Hlavackova, losing to Galina Voskoboeva and Daniele Bracciali 6-4, 6-2.

Federer sets win record

Meanwhile, Roger Federer set a new record of 234 Grand Slam match wins as he reached the French Open's last-32 where he was joined by top seed Novak Djokovic whose date with tennis destiny edged a little closer.

Federer, the third seed, overcame a mid-match wobble to beat Romania's Adrian Ungur 6-3, 6-2, 6-7 (6/8), 6-3, and go past Jimmy Connors' long-standing record of 233 wins at the majors which he had equalled in the first round.

"I expect myself to win and I usually manage to do it," said Federer. "It's not like that at the start of your career when you think you are good enough but you are not that good yet."

Djokovic edged closer to Grand Slam history with a 6-0, 6-4, 6-4 win over Slovenia's Blaz Kavcic. The world number one, bidding to become only the third man after Don Budge and Rod Laver to hold all four Grand Slam titles at the same time, put down a gutsy challenge from world number 99 Kavcic.

Argentine ninth-seed Juan Martin Del Potro, the only man outside of Djokovic, Federer and Rafael Nadal to have won a major in the last seven years, made the last-32 with a 6-7 (5/7), 7-6 (7/3), 6-4, 6-4 win over France's Edouard Roger-Vasselin.

Del Potro, battling a knee injury and who had to call the trainer onto the court for the second match in a row, faces Croatian 21st seed Marin Cilic for a place in the last-16. Cilic put out 2003 French Open winner and former world number one Juan Carlos Ferrero of Spain 7-6 (7/4), 6-2, 6-3.

Azarenka, Stosur cruise

In the women's draw, Victoria Azarenka and Samantha Stosur moved closer to a potential quarter-final showdown with both coasting to straight sets wins as the second round got underway.

Top-seeded Azarenka from Belarus defeated German qualifier Dinah Pfizenmaier 6-1, 6-1 while Australian sixth-seed Stosur saw off Irina Falconi of the US 6-1, 6-4.

Azarenka won the Australian Open in January and is seeking to become the first woman since Jennifer Capriati to win the first two Grand Slam tournaments of the year.

"It was a different game for sure," she said. "I didn't really know my opponent and it took a few games to understand. But after a few games I found my rhythm and definitely played much better today."

Victoria Azarenka

"It was a different game for sure. I didn't really know my opponent and it took a few games to understand what she does. But after a few games I found my rhythm and definitely played much better today."

Samantha Stosur

"It's only the third round and there is a long way to go yet before you are holding the trophy. It's just one of those things — you have to knuckle down. I know that I've had good runs here. Now I'm up to the third step of that."

Roger Federer

"I expect myself to win when I walk on the court and I usually manage to do exactly that. It's not like that at the start of your career when you think you are good enough but you are not that good yet."

Zardari endorses formation of National Human Rights Commission

ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari signed the National Commission for Human Rights Bill 2012 on Wednesday.

The National Human Rights Commission Act was endorsed by the Senate on March 9 and passed by the National Assembly on May 4 this year.

A few months after the bill was signed by the Senate, the Human Rights Watch (HRW) had urged the president to not sign the bill until it was revised to authorise investigations of the military and the intelligence agencies for rights abuses.

The HRW had said that the current bill would "prevent the commission from addressing or investigating human rights violations by members of the armed forces and intelligence agencies."

The commission includes the chairperson of the National Commission on Status of Women, as well as a member from minorities.

The panel, either on its own or after receiving a petition concerning violation of human rights, will be eligible to seek a report from the federal government.

Also, panel members or any other individual authorised by the body, will be entitled to visit the country's jails as well as any other detainment centre falling under the authority of the government or the intelligence agencies.

The commission would have the legal authority to summon witnesses and obtain documents, including government documents. However, according to the bill passed, the panel cannot inquire directly into the acts of intelligence outfits.
