Human Tower group makes its New York debut

New York s skyscrapers were challenged with the rise of a 150-member human tower. Known as castells in Spain, the group called Castellers de Vilafranca has been performing around New York City for a week. While in Manhattan the team broke a world record by building the first eight-level castell ever.

Each tower is an example of concentration, strength and balance and takes roughly 5-7 minutes to build and collapse. The tower is formed by a succession of wedding cake like tiers, which get smaller as the tower gets higher. The layers form as members literally climb over their teammates bodies, and then is topped by a nine year old child.

Accompanying each build is inspirational Catalonian music played by a quartet.

The Castellers de Vilafranca is said to be one of Spain s best and has released a documentary film on their history called "The Human Tower."

US experts predict higher sea level rise: study

Global sea levels could rise two to three times higher over the next century than previously estimated, according to a study released Friday by the US National Research Council.

A committee of experts evaluated that latest UN estimates and updated them with new data on polar ice-cap melting that is believed to be speeding up sea level rise around the world.

By 2100, the NRC estimates that global sea levels will rise between 20-55 inches (50 and 140 centimeters).

The UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change s projection in 2007 had predicted a fraction of that, at seven to 23 inches (18-59 centimeters) worldwide.

Researchers said the wide range within each estimate is due to increasing uncertainty about sea level projections as they attempt to assess what may happen further and further into the future.

In the near term, the NRC predicted a global sea level rise of three to nine inches (eight to 23 centimeters) by 2030 (over the 2000 level) and seven to 19 inches (18 to 48 centimeters) by 2050.

The committee was convened by an executive order from the state of California to assess sea level rise in order to inform preparations for coastal impact, and to make the first detailed predictions for the US West Coast.

The NRC found that the sea level was projected to rise faster than global estimates in much of southern California due to land erosion and subsiding coastline.

But the northern part of the state as well as the coasts of Oregon and Washington could see less of an impact than the rest of the world because of shifts in the Earth that are causing the coasts there to rise, it said.

"The lower sea levels projected for northern California, Washington and Oregon coasts are because the land is rising largely due to plate tectonics," said the report.

"In this region, the ocean plate is descending below the continental plate at the Cascadia Subduction Zone, pushing up the coast."

More severe weather events are expected to accompany higher sea levels, and a major earthquake in northern California could cause a sudden sea level rise of one meter (yard) or more, the report said.

Robert Dalrymple, committee chair and professor of civil engineering at Johns Hopkins University, noted that "as the average sea level rises, the number and duration of extreme storm surges and high waves are expected to escalate, and this increases the risk of flooding, coastal erosion and wetland loss."

The NRC study was jointly sponsored by the states of California, Washington and Oregon, the US Army Corps of Engineers, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the US Geological Survey.

Djokovic, Federer drawn to meet in Wimbledon semis

Random as Grand Slam tournament draws are meant to be, Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer keep bumping into each other in major semifinals, and it could happen again at Wimbledon.

The No. 1-seeded Djokovic, the defending champion, and No. 3 Federer a six-time winner at the All England Club were placed in the same half of this year s field Friday. They ve played in the semifinals at five of the past seven Grand Slam tournaments, with Djokovic holding a 4-1 edge, including a victory two weeks ago at the French Open.

Similarly, No. 2 Rafael Nadal and No. 4 Andy Murray are making a habit of major semifinal meetings: Wimbledon could make the fifth time in nine majors they ve played at that stage. Nadal is 4-0 against Murray in that stretch, including at the All England Club in 2010 and 2011.

The potential men s quarterfinals at Wimbledon, where play begins Monday, include Djokovic vs. No. 6 Tomas Berdych, the 2010 runner-up; Federer vs. No. 8 Janko Tipsarevic or No. 11 John Isner, the big-serving, 6-foot-9 American best known for beating Nicolas Mahut 70-68 in the fifth set of the longest match in tennis history; two-time champion Nadal vs. No. 5 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga; and Murray vs. No. 7 David Ferrer or No. 9 Juan Martin del Potro.

Isner, it so happens, could wind up with a second-round match against Mahut an annual occurrence at the grass-court Grand Slam tournament. After their 11-plus-hour marathon in the first round in 2010, they met again in the first round last year.

The women s quarterfinals set up by Friday s draw are No. 1 Maria Sharapova vs. No. 8 Angelique Kerber; No. 6 Serena Williams, a four-time champion, vs. Petra Kvitova, the defending champion; No. 3 Agnieszka Radwanska or Venus Williams vs. No. 5 Sam Stosur; and No. 2 Victoria Azarenka vs. No. 7 Caroline Wozniacki.

Sharapova and four-time Wimbledon champion Serena Williams could meet only in the final which would be a rematch of 2004, when Sharapova won her first major title.

Coming off a French Open championship that completed a career Grand Slam, Sharapova managed to avoid plenty of top players who wound up on the other half of the bracket, including Kvitova, Wozniacki, Julia Goerges, Ana Ivanovic and Marion Bartoli.

Sharapova s toughest early test might come in the second round against 40th-ranked Tsvetana Pironkova of Bulgaria, who upset Venus Williams en route to the semifinals at Wimbledon in 2010, then got to the quarterfinals last year.

Venus Williams, unseeded at Wimbledon for the first time since she made her tournament debut at age 17 in 1997, could face Radwanska in the second round a rematch of their second-round meeting at the French Open, won by Radwanska.

Kim Clijsters, also unseeded this year after missing three months with injuries, was drawn to face another former No. 1, Jelena Jankovic, in the first round.

Teacher held for damaging child̢۪s eye

MULTAN:

A seminary teacher has been arrested by Shujabad police for damaging the left eye of an eight-year-old student.

Police have yet to register an FIR against Qari Ismaeel. They say they have postponed the registration of the FIR until a medical report is available from the Shujabad tehsil headquarters (THQ) hospital where the child, Abu Bakr, was referred for medical examination on Thursday.

THQ hospital Medical Officer Idrees Bhatti told The paksarzameen.tk the child's eye had been badly damaged from the beating. He said a medical report would be issued on Friday after a detailed examination by an eye surgeon. "The eye specialist will be in a better position to tell if the child will be able to see from the affected eye or mot," he said.

Child's father Muhammad Rafiq told the Tribune that he was beaten as a punishment for his absence from the seminary on Wednesday.

He alleged that the seminary was not registered with the government but said that most poor people enroll their children there because there was no school in the vicinity.

SHO Fayyaz Khan claimed that the cleric had confessed during questioning to beating the child.

Child sent with father

In another incident, a child, who claimed to have escaped detention at a seminary in Kukar Hata village, was handed over to his parents on Thursday.

Muhammad Hussain, president of Brick Kilns Association in Multan, said the child, Muhammad Ali, 11, had come to his kiln and asked for work on Wednesday. He said when he asked the child about wounds on his arms and body he told him that he had escaped from a seminary where he was kept in chains for four days.

"He (the child) said he did not return home fearing that his father might take him back to the seminary," Hussain said.

The child said he had broken the chains using an axe he found at the seminary. He said several other students were held in chains at the seminary.

He said the cleric had chained him as soon as his father left him at the seminary four days ago.

His father Muhammad Iftikhar reached Multan on Thursday morning after Hussain called and informed him about his child. Iftikhar said he would not report the matter to the police.

ECB indicts Kaneria for spot-fixing

LONDON: Former Pakistan leg-spinner Danish Kaneria has been indicted for spot-fixing by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) disciplinary committee, Express News reported on Friday.

According to a statement, Mervyn Westfield was also found guilty.

“The panel will now consider the appropriate sanction against both players and a decision is expected later today (Friday),” said the statement.

Earlier, Kaneria had challenged the ECB through his lawyer Farogh Nasim after the organisation summoned the leg-spinner for a disciplinary hearing into corruption charges.

The ECB wanted Kaneria in for the hearing after he was named in a London court as a go-between in the scandal following which his former Essex teammate Mervyn Westfield was given a four-month sentence.

The leg-spinner was arrested in 2010 along with Westfield on suspicion of spot-fixing during an Essex match against Durham in 2009 before being released without charge.

Dilshan's century lifts Sri Lanka

GALLE: Tillakaratne Dilshan scored his first Test century in a year as Sri Lanka made Pakistan toil on the opening day of the first cricket Test in Galle on Friday.

Dilshan made 101 and Kumar Sangakkara was unbeaten on 56 as the hosts, electing to bat after winning the toss, took their lunch score of 94 for one to 188 for two by tea.

Dilshan reached his 13th Test century by sweeping left-arm spinner Abdur Rehman for a boundary just before the tea interval and celebrated by raising both hands high in the air.

It was the 35-year-old’s first three-figure knock in Test cricket since making a career-best 193 against England at Lord’s in June last year.

Dilshan, who hit 13 boundaries and a six, was dismissed in the next over when he was leg-before to off-spinner Saeed Ajmal.

The opener put on 63 for the first wicket with Tharanga Paranavitana and 124 for the second with Sangakkara to lay the foundation for a big first innings total.

Left-handed Sangakkara looked solid with six boundaries, while skipper Mahela Jayawardene was yet to score.

Ajmal was Pakistan’s most successful bowler with two for 46 from 15 overs on a slow pitch that offered no assistance to the bowlers after the initial moisture had dried out.

Pakistan’s lone success before lunch came midway through the morning session when Paranavitana was stumped in Ajmal’s first over after making a scratchy 24.

Paranavitana should have gone on 15 when he was beaten by an Umar Gul delivery, but umpire Ian Gould turned down a loud appeal for a catch at the wicket.

Replays showed a thin edge, but Paranavitana survived because the Umpire Decision Review System (UDRS) is not being used in the series.

The left-hander moved to 24 when he was dropped by Azhar Ali at silly point off Ajmal, but was dismissed later in the same over.

Mohammad Hafeez was leading Pakistan for the first time in Test cricket after Misbahul Haq was handed a one-match ban for his team’s slow over-rate in Monday’s final one-day international.

The tourists awarded a Test cap to 32-year-old middle-order batsman Mohammad Ayub, already a veteran of 93 first-class matches in which he has scored 6,074 runs.

Pakistan picked two seamers, Gul and Junaid Khan, to complement a three-man spin attack of Hafeez, Ajmal and Abdur Rehman.

The hosts were without frontline seamer Chanaka Welegedara, who woke up with a sore shoulder and was replaced by Nuwan Pradeep.
