NAB chairman orders reopening of cases against Sharif brothers

ISLAMABAD:

Nationality Accountability Bureau Chairman Admiral (retd) Fasih Bokhari has ordered the reopening of three references against Nawaz Sharif's family.

Officials told The paksarzameen.tk on Friday that Bokhari – on the recommendations of a special committee – has decided to reopen cases against Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz chief's family, involving an alleged case of money laundering worth more than $32 million.

The special committee headed by NAB Prosecutor General KK Agha has recommended the reopening of cases against politicians after the committee decided to scrutinise cases against all politicians, particularly against the Sharif brothers.

"NAB's chairman has signed an application requesting the accountability court to reopen three references against the Sharif brothers to contest a petition which was filed by the Sharif brothers in [the] Lahore High Court in October 2011," said an official statement. "These cases include Hudaibia Paper Mills, assets beyond known sources of income and Ittefaq foundry (wilful loan default)."

On May 17, the bureau had formally announced that the decision to initiate inquiries against Nawaz and Shahbaz Sharif came after President Asif Ali Zardari's order to scrutinise all politicians.

"The president directed NAB's chairman to make sure that there should be no political victimisation in such cases," said a top official.

The special committee will revisit all the cases pending against politicians, the official revealed while adding that "we are in the process of scrutinising the remaining cases relating to politicians and the findings/recommendations would be shared with the media accordingly".

Sharif brothers on February 15, 1995 provided a guarantee to pay on demand the Leasing Company any such due against the Hudabiya Paper Mills up to a maximum of $12.046 million together with all profits and charges, stated the reference as quoted by investigators. However, the paper mill failed to make the payment on the first due date or any date thereafter.

Then interior minister Rehman Malik had claimed on April 28, 2012 that he had documented evidence of corruption against the PML-N leadership and would file a reference against them to NAB. The federal government is the complainant in this reference, which also includes cases related to defaulting on loans worth Rs4.9 billion taken from nine different banks in the early 90s.

The official statement further stated that the proceedings on cases against the Sharif brothers were adjourned sine-die (without assigning a day for a further hearing) by the accountability court in 2001 when they were in exile.

After their return, NAB filed an application for the reopening of these cases in 2007 which was granted. But later on, these cases were adjourned sine-die in 2010 by the accountability court with the direction that the trial could be commenced if an application signed by the bureau's chairman is submitted before the court.

PML-N Information Secretary Mushahidullah Khan rejected the allegations saying: "We are ready to face inquiries… These are totally politically motivated inquiries.

"The bureau should become a mouthpiece of the Supreme Court rather than the president," he told The paksarzameen.tk.

Test rankings: Pakistan overtake India

Despite a 1-0 series-loss against Sri Lanka, Pakistan has risen to fourth in the International Cricket Council's (ICC) Test rankings, overtaking India in the process.

The new rankings, released by the ICC yesterday, reflect all Test series completed since August 2009 with results from the previous year having dropped off. Over the next 12 months, new results will be added to the table as they happen so that by July 2013 there will be four years of results taken into consideration.

Pakistan have lost just five Tests in the last two years – including three in the infamous 2010 series against England – and the series-loss against Sri Lanka was the first under Misbhaul Haq's tenure as captain.

Meanwhile, South Africa's chances of replacing England as number one after their forthcoming three- Test series became more difficult. The South Africans slipped to third in the list – Australia replacing them in second – and dropped to nine points off England from just a point adrift.

The Proteas slipped down because their series victories in England and Australia four years ago were no longer valid to the rankings. A 1-0 or 2-1 defeat to South Africa would see the victors go level on points with England, but above them by a decimal fraction.

Should England either draw or win, though, they will stay on top – and if they were to whitewash the tourists, South Africa would drop to fourth.

Misbah sees bright future

Meanwhile, Misbah said that Pakistan's future was secure with the emergence of promising young players despite losing the Test and One-Day International (ODI) series on their tour of Sri Lanka.

Pakistan lost the five-match ODI series 3-1 and the Test series 1-0. They levelled a two-match Twenty20 series 1-1. The Test defeat ended Pakistan's unbeaten run of seven series. That unbeaten streak also included a 3-0 whitewash of world number one Test team England earlier this year.

Misbah, who captained Pakistan since their defeat against England in 2010, deplored the defeats on the Sri Lanka tour.

"Defeats in the one-days and Tests are disappointing," Misbah told reporters on the team's return home on Saturday. "We could have won the one-day series but our fielding let us down in the last two matches. The Test defeat was also unfortunate. But the performance of young players like Azhar Ali, Asad Shafiq and Junaid Khan assured Pakistan has a good future. Our junior players did very well in the Tests. Ali, Shafiq and Junaid have done well in the series and with their performance we can say that our future is secure. In difficult situations these players performed well for us. The way Adnan Akmal played (in Pallekele Test) with a fractured finger is a good sign. Junaid is a big plus."

Ali scored two hundreds in the Tests, while Shafiq hit a century in the final Test. Sri Lanka won the first Test in Galle by 209 runs. Left-arm paceman Junaid took 14 wickets in the three Tests, including five-wickets hauls in the second and third Tests. (With additional input from AFP)

Misbah

"The Test defeat was also unfortunate. But the performance of young players like Azhar Ali, Asad Shafiq and Junaid Khan assured Pakistan has a good future."

Hafeez

"We had a number of new players in the Twenty20 so the first match was lost because of inexperience but we came back well to win the second game."

Cricket: ‘We aim to win the World Twenty20’

KARACHI:

The Pakistan women's cricket team is now capable of a good show against England, New Zealand and India after showing improvement in the last few months, according to coach Mohtashim Rasheed.

Karachi is currently playing host to the women's Twenty20 triangular event with the view to give the players practise ahead of the 2013 World Twenty20 in Sri Lanka and Rasheed believes that Pakistan will go into this event as title-contenders and not mere participants.

"The team has learned very quickly and it can now do well against top sides like England, New Zealand and India," Rasheed told The Pak Sar Zameen.

"We won't go to the World Twenty20 as just participants. We're taking part to win it."

Rasheed added that while the standard had improved with time, several good performers have also been shortlisted as they have the potential to become an integral part of the national setup in the future. The coach also added that following the team's 2010 Asian Games triumph, more departments should invest in the players as that will help motivate them.

Pakistan will head to Ireland and England for their World Twenty20 preparation. Ireland will be hosting a tri-series also involving Bangladesh in August and Pakistan will take on England's Women Academy and the West Indies in England the following month.

"It'll be a good opportunity to play against a top side like England in tough conditions. These tough series can help a team to raise their its game and help gauge where they stand before a mega event. Hopefully, the players will take full advantage of the opportunity."

Singapore serves 2012 fish heads to set Guinness World Record

Singapore set a new Guinness World Record by serving 2012 fish heads to 2012 paying customers.

The red snapper heads, a delicacy in Singapore, were cooked in a spicy curry broth by six different restaurants, part of celebrations during the food festival in Little India.

C. Sankaranathan, the President of the Indian Restaurants Association, said he came up with the record-making idea to commemorate the year, but also to celebrate the best of Indian seafood cuisine.

He added that the dish itself was unique to Singapore, an island state.

"No others is going to break this record. They can t. It s not easy to get so many fish heads in a day. It s really difficult to do it. Only in Singapore we can do it and we have done it. We have the largest serving of fish heads. And within that, any organizer could create a dish in flavour of their region, their local flavours," Vara said.

While the counting was underway, everyone was told to wait before they tucked into their fish head curries.

Diner Sharon Yeo said she was happy to be part of the making of the record.

"I think it s exciting. It has never been done in Singapore. It has never been done in anywhere else. I think it s a feat to be able to serve 2012 piping hot fish heads all at one time. Review: Mere Dard Ko Jo Zuban Mile: Episode 3
Jul 14th 2012, 19:51

For me, today's episode was definitely more touching and moving than the last one. Zakiya's reliance and trust on Ahmed Ali's family and total disregard of what her sister and brother-in-Law had to say showed that she is a wise woman who can see through people. While I was very happy to see Zakiya doing a great job of distinguishing between those around her where family was concerned, unfortunately she could not apply the same instinct/wisdom when it came to the people at work. Running a business is obviously something very new for her and she has so much to deal with all of a sudden. We saw a very Confused and grief stricken Zakiya being exploited at the hands of Harris and his father and signed the cheque they asked her to without much questioning. Later on, leaving Harris with Urooj was another decision she took because she was completely oblivious of what ever went on between her dead husband and Harris. I must appreciate the fact that things move with a very fast pace in this play yet you never feel rushed. Zakiya found out soon enough that Harris and his father could not be trusted. I am glad we did not have to wait for few more episodes for this development to take place. I am so sure if it were any other drama Zakiya would have been fooled and cheated for three more episodes before she found out the truth and she would have confided in her sister too.

Urooj's wondering eyes and poignant expressions literally broke my heart, Shehryaar Munawar's brilliant was so convincing, I could totally relate to what Urooj must be going through.

I loved it how Amina turned out to be the pillar of strength for both Zakiya and Urooj. It almost felt like she was meant to be a part of this family. Today's episode showed us another side of Amina's personality, she is not just a happy-go-lucky girl but also very mature and intelligent. On the other side the scene between Arfa and Junaid, although short, was spot-on. I have said this before but I can't help but say it again that the chemistry between these two is remarkable and Alishba Yusuf has never looked this good.

Kamran proved today that he will leave no stone unturned to take over the business. Razia is not as evil as Kamran but she will do anything to please her husband and gladly follows Kamran's lead.

Even with all the serious developments today, the drama did not lose its comic aspect and like always Amina and her jokes were a breath of fresh air. The only quibble i had with today's episode was that the picture quality was not that great, I could barely see the faces.

Overall, like always, today's episode was very engrossing and had me glued to the TV screen. I must appreciate the entire team of this play for a job well done and have great expectations from this play.

PTI to take peace caravan to Waziristan by late September: Imran Khan

PESHAWAR: Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) will take a peace caravan to Waziristan, a place engulfed by militancy and security operations, by late September, announced party chief Imran Khan during a rally in Peshawar on Saturday.

"We will take representatives of human rights organisations and the media with us. We will march for peace," said Khan, adding that the party wants to show the government that 'innocent people' are being killed in the area.

According to Khan, the party is holding protests to force the government to come out of the US war. "This is not our war, this is not Pakistan's war," Khan said as the participants started chanting the famous slogan of "Amreeka ka jo yaar hai, ghaddar hai, ghaddar hai (Those who are friends with the US are traitors)". Khan added that the government is fighting the war for dollars.

The party chief also called on President Asif Ali Zardari to "bring back his Rs1 billion from Switzerland".

"If you try to destroy the Supreme Court to save your looted money, then the tsunami march will reach there as well," Khan warned and went on to bash the newly elected Prime Minister Raja Pervaiz Ashraf. "Raja Rental, end this loadshedding. This is because of your theft and ineligibility that people are suffering."

Khan also targeted the major political party of the province, the Awami National Party (ANP). "We had high hopes from you, but you also became a pawn of Zardari and started looting along."
