Curiosity rover to make landing on Mars on Aug 6

Posted:

On August 6, if all goes well, a robotic geologist will arrive on Mars. NASA scientists gave details on Monday about their latest Mars mission, which will try out a new strategy for searching for life beyond Earth.

If the Mars Science Laboratory, a wheeled rover nicknamed Curiosity, touches down safely -- which is by no means a given -- scientists expect to have two years to collect information about Mount Sharp and the surrounding area.

NASA hopes to land the Mars rover on a flat surface as close as possible to the base of Mount Sharp using a first-of-a-kind, rocket-powered sky crane.

The exact landing spot will depend on the craft s final steering maneuvers as it races toward Mars.

Mars Programme Director Doug Mccuistion said the landing was not without its risks.

"Is it crazy? Well, not so much. Once you get comfortable, once you understand it, it s not a crazy concept. It works. Is it risky? Landing on Mars is always risky. There are hundreds of discreet events that occur from release of the cruise stage to parachute deployments to heat shield deployments.

All of these are unique and any one could cause problems. We go from 13000 miles an hour to zero in seven minutes. That s quite a challenge in itself. And then there s the unknown. There s Mars. Mars throws things at you. Dust storms, atmospheric density changes, wind. So it s a very unique and a very challenging environment," he said.

Rather than hunt for microbes like the Viking missions of the 1970s, NASA s Mars Science Laboratory will look for places that could have hosted and preserved life.

The rover blasted off aboard an unmanned Atlas 5 rocket on Nov. 26 for a nine-month, 60-million mile voyage that is due to end at 1:30 a.m. EDT on Aug. 6. ‎

Mountainous cake unveiled in La Paz

Posted:

For anyone looking to get their afternoon sugar fix there was no better place to be than La Paz s Camacho Plaza on Monday where a cake of mountainous proportions was served up in 10,000 slices.

It took 85 bakers a week to make what they say is South America s biggest cake.

Gastronomy students and instructors at the Bolivia Gourmet Gastronomy Institute used more than 11,000 eggs, and hundreds of kilogrammes (pounds) of flour, cocoa and sugar to make the pastry in honour of the 203rd anniversary of the liberation of La Paz.

The bakers worked in three shifts around the clock to beat, mix and bake the cake which was inspired by Bolivia s largest mountain, Mount Illimani, which towers over the capital city.

A team of students and staff was needed to work together to pour the litres of batter into 400 cake moulds to be carefully baked in the schools ovens.

No detail was missed in the massive undertaking as the cooks whipped up gallons of dulce de leche, a caramel like filling, to fill the layers of the cake which also had layers of strawberries and chocolate fillings.

"Right now we are making the dulce de leche filling for South America s biggest cake. We are filling it with dulce de leche which goes with the cake.

We are using 300 litres (80 gallons) of milk. It is hard work, but we do it with love," said Bolivia Gourmet Gastronomy Institute student Lourdes Garcia.

On Sunday night, once all the pieces and sweet fillings were prepared and ready, the team used two trucks provided by the city to rush the week s worth of baking to the city square where it was unveiled on Monday.

The team assembled the sheets of cake into a sweet chocolate mountain to mirror the famed Mount Illimani.

Students slathered the cake in gallons of whipped cream to represent the icy peak of the snow-capped mountain.

At five metres tall, seven metres long and five metres wide the director of the school, Oscar Mora, said the cake could possibly be the largest in the world, though they were not able to register with Guinness but are documenting their achievement for possible inclusion in the famous listing later.

However, according to the official Guinness World Records, a 2008 creation in Indonesia was much bigger, coming in at a towering 33 metres (108 ft) tall.

"This is really the biggest cake in South America and maybe even the world," Mora said.

"There are 85 of us working on this and we are using close to 11,500 eggs, 10 sacks of flour, seven sacks of sugar, 20 kilos of baking powder, 300 kilos of dulce de leche, 300 litres of cream all to make this massive cake in honour of our beloved La Paz," he added.

All the ingredients were donated by the companies who make them in the name of the city.

A large crowd gathered at the plaza to marvel at the immense cake, but no doubt the highlight of the event will be when the cake is divvied up into thousands of pieces which will be handed out free of charge at the end of the day.

Fedrigo wins 15th stage of Tour de France

Posted:

Pierrick Fedrigo of France won Monday s 15th stage of the Tour de France by leading a two-man final breakaway, as Bradley Wiggins kept the overall lead as he kept with his rivals in the main pack far behind.

The 158.5-kilometre (99-mile) route from Samatan to Pau had a mostly flat layout, but teams with strong sprinters didn t try to chase down the breakaway riders.

Fedrigo, of the FDJ-BigMat team, collected his fourth Tour stage victory by leaving a group of six riders with about 6.5 kilometres (4 miles) left, with only Garmin-Sharp rider Christian Vande Velde of the United States able to stay close.

Vande Velde made a brief burst to try to outsprint Fedrigo in the last 200 metres, but his rival accelerated to the line to become the fourth French rider to win a stage this Tour.

"It s incredible ... the stars need to be aligned," said Fedrigo, whose last Tour stage win was also in Pau two years ago. "There are days when things go like that."

Fedrigo said the victory was especially satisfying because he was sidelined for six months last year after suffering from tick-borne Lyme disease.

Wiggins finished 11 minutes, 50 seconds behind Fedrigo in the main pack. The 32-year-old Team Sky leader is looking to become Britain s first winner of cycling s showcase race

Overall, Wiggins leads second-place teammate Christopher Froome by 2:05. Vincenzo Nibali of Italy is third, 2:23 behind, while defending champion Cadel Evans remains fourth, 3:19 back.

Wiggins said he and other riders were looking forward to Tuesday s rest day.

"A lot of people are tired now mentally more than physically," he told French TV. "It was hard today nonetheless, it was quite hot. And the road was hilly."

The rest day comes before two punishing days in the Pyrenees that, along with a final time trial in the next-to-last stage, are likely to determine the winner of the three-week race, which ends on July 22 in Paris.

Olympics: Athletes arrive in London, airport under pressure

The Olympic Athletes Village opened its doors Monday to the first competitors as the logistical operation to handle the arrival of thousands of athletes and officials shifted into a higher gear.

London s Heathrow Airport was expecting to handle a record number of passengers, with the Olympics arrivals swelling numbers to almost 237,000 at the west London hub, compared to 190,000 on an ordinary day.

The first priority "Games Lane" went into operation on the M4 motorway leading from Heathrow, to allow athletes and officials to be whisked to their destinations without being delayed by London traffic.

It emerged that nine police forces have had to deploy extra officers to help with security for the Games, a week after the government was forced to draft in 3,500 troops to meet a shortfall in private security guards.

At Heathrow, where passengers have complained of being stuck in passport queues for several hours in recent weeks, the addition of extra border officials appeared to have eased the process.

There were few complaints from spectators or athletes, who were greeted by more than 500 volunteers as they landed.

The Netherlands women s beach volleyball team flew in from Amsterdam in a blaze of orange tops and said they were impressed by the setup.

One of the players, Marleen van Iersel, 24, told AFP: "From the moment we walked off the plane there were people helping us straight away. It is very well-organised."

A large US contingent also arrived at Heathrow, including members of the sailing teams.

But experiences of the early arrivals were mixed, with two-time world 400 metres hurdles champion Kerron Clement claiming the bus ferrying him and his US teammates from Heathrow to the Athletes Village had taken four hours.

Clement tweeted: "Um, so we ve been lost on the road for 4hrs. Not a good first impression London.

"Athletes are sleepy, hungry and need to pee. Could we get to the Olympic Village please."

However, the hurdler later tweeted to praise facilities at the athlete s village, located in the Olympic Park in Stratford, east London.

"Eating at the Olympic village," he wrote. "Love the variety of food choices, African, caribbean, Halal cuisine, India and Asian and of course McDonalds."

London Mayor Boris Johnson shrugged off the incident, joking that it had given the athletes "even more of an opportunity to see even more of the city than they might otherwise have done."

Competitors and officials will be accommodated in 2,818 apartments across 11 residential blocks, each built around a courtyard offering athletes space to relax.

Organisers could do nothing though about the grey skies and persistent drizzle in London as athletes got a first taste of their home for the next three weeks.

The Australian team have already taken over several balconies of one block, with a banner reading "Aussie, Aussie, Aussie; Oi, Oi, Oi" draped across them.

The furore over the giant private security firm G4S showed no signs of abating, despite ministers insistence that the Games would be secure.

G4S has insisted that the extra police drafted in should be able to withdraw in the next few days.

"This situation is being rectified over the coming days, which should lead to the withdrawal of police officers from those roles assigned to private security," a G4S spokesman said.

Russia blocks UN Council statement in Syria

Russia on Monday blocked a proposed UN Security Council statement on mass killings in the Syrian village of Treimsa, diplomats said, amid worsening deadlock over international action on the conflict.

Russian envoys opposed the statement, saying it was not clear what had happened in Treimsa, council diplomats told AFP on condition of anonymity.

A draft statement had been proposed saying that Thursday s attack on the village was a Syrian government "violation" of its commitments to UN-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan not to use heavy weapons. But Russia put a hold on its release.

Dozens of people were killed in Treimsa by President Bashar al-Assad s troops and pro-government militias, according to Syrian activists. The government has denied involvement.

Russia called for Major General Robert Mood, the head of the UN Supervision Mission in Syria (UNSMIS), to brief the council on the killings.

UN spokesman Martin Nesirky said UNSMIS was still trying to check the facts of what happened in Treimsa, but added that it was "quite apparent that something terrible happened there and that heavy weaponry was used."

Western diplomats said they would now probably stop pressing for the statement so the 15-nation council can concentrate on negotiating a formal resolution on the future of the UN mission in Syria which has to be agreed by Friday.

"I don t think there is going be any press communique," said Colombia s UN ambassador Nestor Osorio, the council president for July.

Britain, France, United States, Germany and Portugal want a resolution under Chapter VII of the UN Charter that includes the threat of sanctions if Assad does not halt the use of heavy weapons. Heavy clashes hit Syrian capital for second day

Posted:

Syrian rebels fired at tanks in Damascus residential districts, armored vehicles blocked the main entrances to a neighborhood and protesters briefly barricaded a main highway into the city with bricks and burning tires, leaving hundreds of cars backed up in some of the worst clashes to hit the tightly controlled capital since the uprising began 16 months ago.

The scenes from the second straight day of fierce clashes in Damascus, unfolding in amateur videos posted online, were the latest evidence that Syria s conflict is fast devolving into a civil war that is moving ever closer to the seat of President Bashar Assad s power.

Plumes of black smoke drifted over the city skyline and gunfire could be heard throughout the capital, even in the upscale cafes in downtown frequented by members of Assad s regime. The fighting left many streets deserted in a string of neighborhoods on the city s southwest corner where the fighting was focused. Many families have fled, and fear grips many who remain behind.

"It is a war here, a war," said a woman reached by phone in the Midan neighborhood who said her 5-year-old son had not stopped screaming since the clashes started. She didn t give her name for fear of repercussions from Syrian security.

"It seems there is a new strategy to bring the fighting into the center of the capital," Mustafa Osso, an activist inside Syria, told The Associated Press, referring to the rebels who fight under the banner of the Free Syrian Army. "The capital used to be safe. This will trouble the regime."

The violence in Syria has grown increasingly bloody and chaotic in recent months as the uprising has morphed from a peaceful revolt into an armed insurgency aimed at toppling Assad s regime.

Monday s fighting in Damascus was concentrated in the neighborhoods of Kfar Souseh, Midan and Tadamon, according to Osso and the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. The Observatory said there were casualties but did not provide a number.

An amateur video posted online showed several gunmen, some of them masked, as they ran or opened fire in the streets of Tadamon. Other gunmen took positions behind sand bag fortifications and fired toward areas where government forces were said to be taking positions.

Another video showed Kfar Souseh with the sound of intense gunfire in the distance. The presidential palace, on a mountain overlooking the capital, could be seen in the background.

The authenticity of the videos could not be independently confirmed.

There have been sporadic clashes in Damascus in recent months, although President Bashar Assad s forces remain firmly in control of the city. Many of the Damascus suburbs, however, have risen up against the regime, prompting a ferocious response from the military in an attempt to clear out rebel fighters from the towns that ring the capital.

On Monday, activists reported government attacks in the Damascus suburb of Qatana.

Rami Abdul-Rahman, who heads the Observatory, said Monday s fighting was taking place about 2 kilometers (1 mile) from the airport highway.

Planning and commerce: Muslim Town businesses suffer as road fixing delayed

LAHORE:

Shops in Muslim Town are continuing to lose business because of the government's failure to complete the service roads around the Muslim Town flyover, which was inaugurated on May 30.

The disruption to their businesses has gone on since September last year, when work on the flyover began and traffic on Ferozepur Road was diverted to the service lanes. The service roads crumbled due to heavy traffic loads including heavy machinery used in the construction.

Though the flyover was officially inaugurated six weeks ago, the service roads under the flyover are still unrepaired. Further, workers are now building an elevated bus lane for the Metro Bus Service project, formerly known as the Bus Rapid Transit System. With that work due to take at least six months, the businesses have been left wondering about their future.

Hafiz Zubair, the owner of Delite Store, said that business had never been so bad in the 42 years since he had opened the store on Wahdat Road. "I would say our sales are 30 per cent of what they used to be before the construction of the flyover began," said Zubair.

He said that most of his clientele were from Ichhra and Canal Bank Road and they had stopped coming after the road was broken up. He said that some shop owners had formed unions and approached the government, which had repaired patches of road in front of their shops, but most of the road was still a mess.

Malik Ayaz, the owner of Rafiq Sweet House, said that they had been losing business since the start of the flyover project. "We had hoped the situation would improve after the inauguration of the flyover, but they haven't repaired the road at ground level," he said.

Wajid Butt, the general manager of the popular Butt Sweet House, said that the business was operating at 50 per cent of the level it was at last year. He said that he did not expect things to improve soon. He said that the government had not communicated any deadlines for the repair of the roads to the shopkeepers.

Sabir Khan Sadozai, the project director for the Muslim Town flyover, said that the repair of the service roads had initially been delayed because the Water and Sanitation Agency had to lay a sewage line. Then the Traffic Engineering and Transport Planning Agency (TEPA) stopped the repairs as the final design of the elevated bus lane for the Metro Bus Service, being drawn up by the National Engineering Services of Pakistan (NESPAK), had not arrived. "Otherwise we could have had a situation where we finished the reconstruction of the road but TEPA had to break sections of it again to lay piers for the elevated bus lane," he said.

Sadozai said that the design of the bus lane had been received from NESPAK last week and they had started the road works. He said that WASA still had some work to finish, namely to raise the height of gutter necks on Wahdat Road and Ferozepur Road so that the manholes were at the same level as the road. He said that work on the service lane around FC College and the 1122 office would be finished in a few days. He said some sections of the road would not be repaired until after the bus lane is finished.

Asked why the design of the bus lane for the MBS project had been changed and delayed, TEPA Director Mazhar Hussain, who is in charge of the construction, said that the decision had been made to avoid the expense and hassle of having to acquire land for a ground-level bus lane.

Pakistan cricket team to tour India in December

The Pakistan cricket team will visit India for a short tour in December, the Indian media reported on Monday.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has said that the tour will take place in December and will consist of three One Day International matches.

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Zaka Ashraf told media that Pakistan was still waiting for a formal invitation for the series, but said “it seems it will surely be held later this year”.

“The decision is great and we welcome it. It seems that millions of cricket fans have their wishes fulfilled,” said Ashraf in Lahore.

“We are still waiting for a BCCI invitation for the series, but it seems it will surely be held later this year.”

Earlier in April, President Asif Ali Zardari during a daylong visit to India had requested Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to resume cricketing ties between the two countries.

All bilateral sporting ties including the most sought-after cricket games were stalled after the November 2008 Mumbai attacks, which killed 166 people including some foreigners, blamed on militants based in Pakistan.

Pakistan last toured India in 2007 while India featured in the Asia Cup held across the border in 2008.
