Houla massacre: US expels Syrian envoy

"We hold the Syrian government responsible for this slaughter of innocent lives," State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said, informing charge d affaires Zuheir Jabbour that he had 72 hours to leave the United States.

Nuland said the expulsion was carried out in coordination with Australia, Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy and Spain, which have also moved to expel Syrian ambassadors or top envoys.

In her written statement, Nuland said the massacre was "the most unambiguous indictment to date" of Syria s flagrant UN Security Council violations and urged all countries to take "similar action" to condemn the regime.

She said UN observers confirmed that more than 90 people, including at least 30 children under the age of 10, had died on Friday in the village of Houla after a "vicious assault involving tanks and artillery."

She added these are "weapons that only the (Assad) regime possesses."

According to the latest UN figures, 108 people died in the massacre, including 49 children.

In her daily briefing, Nuland said the United States welcomes the fact that the Russians back "a full investigation" because it will show "regime-sponsored thugs" killed children and their parents at point-blank range.

"From that perspective, is this going to be a turning point in Russian thinking? We hope so," she added.

With Russian and Chinese support, the UN Security Council on Sunday strongly condemned Damascus for using artillery in the May 25 massacre. Russia, like China, had previously opposed two UN Security Council resolutions on Syria.

Nuland appeared to link the massacre to Iran when she said that over the weekend "the deputy head of the Quds Force said publicly that they were proud of the role that they had played in training and assisting the Syrian forces."

She added: "And look what this has wrought." She said the "shabiha thugs" behave much like Iran s Basiji militia.

Nuland said the US did not expel the "handful" of diplomats who remain at the Syrian embassy "primarily because they are simple civil service members," unlike the charge (d affaires) who personally represents Assad and his regime."

Syria s ambassador to Washington, Imad Mustapha, already returned home last year.

The envoy s expulsion is "a political measure. This is a statement of our extreme disapproval and horror at the massacre," Nuland said.

"We will obviously continue to look at other ways we can pressure the regime economically, politically, diplomatically, and continue to try to tighten the noose."

Deadly fungus wiping out populations of bats in North America

Chris Hayes apologizes for refusing to call US soldiers Heroes

LHC orders Punjab government to unseal LESCO grid stations

LAHORE: The Lahore High Court on Tuesday ordered the government of Punjab to unseal three grid stations of the Lahore Electricity Supply Company (Lesco). The stations had been sealed due to nonpayment of property tax.

Taking up a petition filed by Lesco against the sealing of its grid stations, Justice Ayesha A Malik also suspended a Punjab government notification and sought a reply from director general of the Excise and Taxation Department by June 18.

Lesco's counsel argued before the court that under the constitution, the provincial government had no power to recover tax from a department which came in the domain of the federal government. A provincial assembly too had no jurisdiction to make such legislation, he added.

The counsel said the Punjab government illegally and in sheer violation of the Constitution had sent notices to grid stations for recovery of property tax and sealed them on nonpayment.

He prayed to the court to set aside the impugned notification by the Punjab government being null and void and order the unsealing of grid stations.

Resurgent Pakistan eye Sri Lanka scalp

COLOMBO: Pakistan are hoping to build on their impressive record over the past year when they take the field during the full tour of Sri Lanka starting later this week.

“The task here is to win, but the longer goal is to take Pakistan high up in the rankings in all three formats,” Pakistan coach Dav Whatmore said at the series launch in Colombo on Monday night.

“It’s a simple statement, but it requires a lot of work,” he said ahead of the seven-week tour which comprises three Tests, five one-day internationals and two Twenty20 games.

The Pakistanis have come a long way since the match-fixing scandal in England in 2010 led to unprecedented jail terms for Test captain Salman Butt and premier fast bowlers Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Aamer.

The talented but often unpredictable national team has shown consistent winning form over the last 12 months despite being unable to play at home due to security concerns.

Pakistan has won seven of their last nine Test matches, including a 3-0 whitewash of top-ranked England in the United Arab Emirates earlier this year.

Their record in limited-overs cricket has been equally impressive, winning 16 of their last 22 one-day games, topped by the Asia Cup title triumph in Bangladesh in March.

The two Twenty20 games in southern Hambantota on Friday and Sunday provide both teams with a useful build-up for the World Twenty20 tournament to be held in Sri Lanka in September-October.

The Sri Lankans have had an inconsistent year in which they managed just two wins in 14 Tests with six defeats, and lost 21 of their last 35 one-day internationals.

Sri Lankan captain Mahela Jayawardene praised Pakistan’s recent record and saw a good challenge ahead for his home team.

“If you take their performances in the last six months, they have performed really well in all three formats,” he said. “To play them in our conditions is a good challenge.”

Australian Whatmore, a former Sri Lankan coach who guided Arjuna Ranatunga’s men to the World Cup title in 1996, said Pakistan were ready for what would be a tough tour on the field.

“Although Pakistan is unable to play any international matches at home due to the security concerns, they managed to practice together before coming to Sri Lanka,” the coach said.

“We had a pretty decent two-week camp before we came here.”

Whatmore insisted his insider’s knowledge of Sri Lankan cricket would not give Pakistan any advantage.

“It was a long time ago when I finished with Sri Lanka and a lot of water has passed under the bridge,” he said. “I maintain some friendships which are always good but the task here is to win.”

Pakistan’s new Twenty20 captain Mohammad Hafeez said victory over Sri Lanka in all three formats in the United Arab Emirates last year had boosted his team’s morale.

“We all know Sri Lanka are always good on their own soil and we look forward to a very tough series,” said Hafeez, who will be vice-captain to Misbah-ul-Haq in the Tests and the one-dayers.

“But we have had experience playing them in the recent past and had good success against them in the UAE.”

Tour schedule:

June 1 : First Twenty20 international, Hambantota

June 3 : Second Twenty20 international, Hambantota

June 7 : First one-dayer, Pallekele

June 9 : Second one-dayer, Pallekele

June 13: Third one-dayer, Colombo

June 16: Fourth one-dayer, Colombo

June 18: Fifth one-dayer, Colombo

June 22-26: First Test, Galle

June 30-July 4: Second Test, Colombo

July 8-12: Third Test, Pallekele

Changes, training will bring results: Cheema

KARACHI: Forming separate teams for all formats and the extensive training camp with the practice matches will pay dividends against Sri Lanka, according to Pakistan team manager Naveed Akram Cheema.

Pakistan Twenty20 squad, led by Mohammad Hafeez, will practice in Hambantota today ahead of the first of the two Twenty20 internationals on Friday. Cheema, team manager since the series against Sri Lanka in the UAE last year, was confident of an improved show from the Asian champions due to the changes made prior to the tour.

"You see, it's sort of a new-look team," Cheema told The Pak Sar Zameen. "The players have the talent and potential, their morale is high and the combination of junior and senior players is gelling well. The preparation will help us too as the practice matches will play a huge role in removing the rustiness that may have crept in. Sri Lanka are a tough opposition but our preparation gives us a lot of confidence."

Cheema added that he supervised various lectures where the players were reminded of the need to avoid controversies.

"The players were given anti-doping and anti corruption lectures. They were reminded how to behave on-field with the opposition as well as the umpires. Hopefully, the tour will be controversy-free."

Meanwhile, the manager blasted organisers of the function to felicitate the Asia Cup winning squad. Test and One-Day International captain Misbahul Haq, Shahid Afridi and Umar Akmal were among those who left in protest after comedians imitated and mocked the national players.
