Chris Gayle the best batsman in Twenty20 cricket

Posted:

No one doubts Chris Gayle s ability to hit the cricket ball long and hard - he has done it repeatedly in both Tests and ODIs, in all sorts of climes and conditions.

Yet even his staunchest supporter will probably be amazed by the kind of numbers he has racked up in 20-over cricket.

The very nature of the format demands that batsmen take risks all the time, and in doing so attempt low-percentage shots and get out. An average of 30 is considered acceptable in this version, at a strike rate of around 125.

Not for Gayle, though. The spat with the West Indies board has been terrible news for the international team, but it has given Gayle ample time to play 20-over cricket for various sides, in various conditions, all over the world.

(The list reads as follows: Barisal Burners, Sydney Thunder, Matabeleland Tuskers, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Western Australia, Kolkata Knight Riders, Stanford Superstars, Jamaica and PCA Masters XI.)

It has given him the opportunity to hone his skills, and work out his best strokes and scoring areas.

The result has been awesome - Gayle is, quite simply, the best batsman in the world in 20-over cricket; no one even comes close.

The IPL was only the latest example of what he is capable of achieving in this format - his tally of 733 was easily the highest in this edition of the tournament - and also the highest in any edition - while his 59 sixes are as many as the sum of the next three batsmen put together.

His IPL performance took his tally of Twenty20 runs for 2012 past 1000, the second successive year he has achieved this. (In fact, his T20 averages in 2011 and 2012 are exactly the same - 57.57.)

There are clear indications that LPG sales will come down in the country. He said current energy crisis could be handled with help of locally produced LPG. But, there is need to bring down LPG price to make it available to consumers and also as substitute fuel for automobiles

Egypt poll results point to deeply divisive runoff race

Posted:

The runoff will be held on June 16-17, pitting the two top contenders from the first round of voting held Wednesday and Thursday. The victor is to be announced June 21.

Nearly complete results showed the Brotherhood s Mohammed Morsi rising into the second round with a plurality of the votes. Former prime minister Ahmed Shafiq appeared headed into the second round as well though it was not entirely certain. A dark horse leftist candidate was close on his tail for the spot, and still-uncounted votes from the country s biggest metropolis, the capital Cairo and its sister city Giza, gave him at least a theoretical chance to overtake Shafiq.

Morsi and Shafiq are the country s most polarizing candidates, each loathed by significant sectors of the population. A head-to-head match between them is the most heated imaginable scenario ironically, recreating the pattern of the past three decades, when the Brotherhood was the Mubarak regime s top opponent.

The Brotherhood, which already dominates parliament, has promised to implement Islamic law in Egypt, alarming moderate Muslims, secular Egyptians and the Christian minority who fear restrictions on many rights. Morsi s first place win was based on the Brotherhood s ability to bring out its fiercely loyal base. But he garnered less than half the vote that the Brotherhood raked in during parliament elections late last year, a sign of public disenchantment with the group.

Shafiq s strong showing, in turn, would have been inconceivable a year ago amid the public s anti-regime fervor. He was Mubarak s last prime minister and was himself forced out of office by protests several weeks after his former boss was ousted.

A former air force commander and personal friend of Mubarak, he campaigned overtly as an "anti-revolution" candidate in the presidential election, criticizing the anti-Mubarak protesters. He still inspires venom of many who believe he will preserve the Mubarak-style autocracy that the popular revolt sought to uproot. He has been met at public appearances by protesters throwing shoes.

But his rise underlines the frustration with the revolution felt by many Egyptians. The past 15 months have seen continuous chaos, with a shipwrecked economy, a breakdown in public services, increasing crime and persistent protests that turned into bloody riots. That has left many craving stability.

In a runoff, the Brotherhood will likely try to drum up anti-Mubarak fervor among the public, while Shafiq will play on fears of an Islamist takeover. Each has repeatedly spoken of the danger if the other becomes president. Morsi has said there would be massive street protests if Shafiq wins, arguing it could only be the result of rigging though there were no reports of major violations in the first round.

A top Brotherhood lawmaker, Mohammed el-Beltagy, said Shafiq s showing was a "shock."
It "reflected the ability of the old regime to reproduce itself" through its old tools, he said. "This represents a complete threat to the revolution and the nation. Shafiq represents the pre-Jan. 25 Revolution state," he added, referring to the date last year when the uprising against Mubarak began.

Political analyst Bashir Abdel-Fatah, however, contended that "Egyptians don t want an Islamist president they will vote for anyone but an Islamist."
The first rounds results showed the drop in the Brotherhood s popularity since the parliament voting because of their reversals of political positions, poor performance in parliament and moves that people saw as "hunger for power."

"Citizens felt that the Brothers are not really carriers of a message but they want to hijack power," he said.

By mid afternoon Friday, counting had been completed in at least 25 of the country s 27 provinces, representing more than half the votes cast. The election commission said turnout in the election s first round was about 50 percent of more than 50 million eligible voters.
Morsi was in the lead with 26 percent, according to the independent newspaper Al-Masry Al-Youm, which was compiling official reports from counting stations.

But the race for second place was neck-and-neck between Shafiq with 23 percent and leftist Hamdeen Sabahi with 20 percent.
Cairo and Giza, where around 20 percent of the votes nationwide were cast, were likely to be decisive in determining the second-place finisher. The vote counting there was expected to be finished late Friday or early Saturday.

Sabahi was a dark horse during months of campaigning but had a surprising surge in the days before voting began as Egyptians looked for an alternative to both Islamists and the former regime figures known as "feloul" or "remnants." Campaigning on promises to help the poor, Sabahi claimed the mantle of the nationalist, socialist ideology of Gamal Abdel-Nasser, Egypt s president from 1956 to 1970.

"The results reflect that people are searching for a third alternative, those who fear a religious state and those who don t want Mubarak s regime to come back," said Sabahi campaign spokesman Hossam Mounis.

Hockey coach demands improvement from India

IPOH: India’s hockey coach ripped into his squad Friday over its pummelling by New Zealand a day before, saying much work remained before the former power was ready for the London Games.

Australian Michael Nobbs had especially harsh words for his defence, calling it “awful” for leaking what he called easy goals by the Black Sticks on the first day of the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup in Malaysia.

“We were really bad at the back. Everything we talked about and practised in training was forgotten,” Nobbs told reporters in the northern Malaysian city of Ipoh, site of the annual hockey tournament.

The seven-team tournament which also includes Great Britain, Pakistan, Argentina, South Korea and Malaysia is an important last chance for teams to tune up and hone line-ups before the Olympics in July.

India dominated Olympic hockey from the 1920s to the 1950s. A recent run of good form has raised hopes of a strong result in London, with much of the credit going to Nobbs.

But Nobbs said the team went back to “our old style of play” against the Kiwis, accusing defenders of letting their marks get away, and singling out Rupinder Pal Singh and V Raghunath.

Nobbs said the side, ranked 10th in the world, must figure out how to raise its game against better teams like fourth-ranked Great Britain and seventh-ranked New Zealand if they want a good showing at the Olympics.

“We seemed to have problems with teams like Great Britain and New Zealand and need to close the gap playing them,” said Nobbs.

“Indian hockey needs to play catch-up and start defeating these teams in order for us to move up the rankings.”

Nobbs spoke as the team was readying for its second match late on Friday against the sixth-ranked South Koreans.

“The Koreans will be another tough opponent but one that we can defeat. It all boils down to how the players handle the pressure,” he said, adding he was optimistic the team would bounce back in coming games.

Nobbs further warned his players that the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup, which runs to June 3, was a chance for him to determine who was worthy of a ticket to London.

Azlan Shah Cup: Pakistan draw first blood on blue turf

KARACHI: Pakistan got their Azlan Shah Cup campaign and the Olympics preparation off to a flying start as they beat Argentina 4-2 in the tournament's opening match in what was the Greenshirts' first international on the blue Astroturf.

The win also handed new captain Sohail Abbas a perfect start to his reign.

The game was heading towards a goal-less first-half before Mohammad Irfan, following a brilliant pass from Shafqat Rasool, found the goal in the 34th minute. The match gained momentum after the interval with Abbas, courtesy a powerful drag-flick, scored in the 50th minute. However, Argentina bounced back and halved the lead through Peillat Gonzalo who struck off a penalty-corner three minutes later. Their continued attacks yielded results when Paredas Matias Enrique found the equaliser via a field effort in the 62nd minute.

But Pakistan, last year's finalists, held their nerves and scored twice late in the day to seal the result in their favour. Striker Haseem Khan made it 3-2 after he deflected Irfan's shot in the 65th minute before vice-captain Mohammad Waqas scored a minute before full-time.

Cautious strategy went in our favour: Coach

"The positive thing is that we executed our plan well," coach Khwaja Junaid told The Pak Sar Zameen from Ipoh. "It was in our strategy to start off defensively because we wanted to contain our energy till the end in the hot and humid conditions. Argentina were comparatively more aggressive and their energy level went down in the end."

The Olympian was extra pleased with the team winning its first game on the blue turf.

"We are still learning about the blue turf and the win will definitely boost our morale because Argentina are considered a very tough side. The players were cautious and left little gaps in their defense and midfield that went in our favour."

Meanwhile, Junaid also lauded Abbas' leadership.

"He played with responsibility and his individual performance was also not affected as he managed 50 per cent success rate in penalty-corner conversion."

Pakistan will now meet New Zealand on Sunday.
