UN chief calls for change in Syria mission

Posted:

Ban s report to the council, delivered to the Security Council on Friday, recommend s the emphasis of the mission change from military observers - who suspended most of their monitoring activities on June 16 because of increased violence - to the roughly 100 civilian staff focusing on a political solution and issues like human rights.

The deeply divided council must make a decision on what to do with the mission before July 20, when its mandate expires. The council is scheduled to discuss the issue on Wednesday and is due to vote on July 18.

The 15-member council approved in April the deployment of up to 300 unarmed military observers to Syria to oversee a ceasefire that has failed to take hold. The mission is part of a six-point peace plan proposed by international envoy Kofi Annan.

Under Ban s recommendation, the mission would keep its current mandate for up to 300 unarmed observers, but significantly fewer likely would be needed to support the new focus.

No consensus on military option

A meeting of more than 100 nations opposed to President Bashar al-Assad also met on Friday in Paris and called for UN-backed sanctions to force Syria into a political transition. But the government representatives attending the "Friends of Syria" meeting refrained from a call for military action to end the 16-month conflict.

The meeting concluded that Assad could not be part of the transition and called on the Security Council to pass a resolution authorising sanctions and diplomatic action but which explicitly disallows the threat or use of armed force.

The six-point plan peace plan drawn up by Annan has fallen flat, and violence has climbed to levels even higher than before the plan was proposed.

Members of Syria s opposition at the Paris meeting said the international community is still moving too slowly, and called for a military measure to end the crisis.

The meeting came amid reports that Manaf Tlas, a Syrian general and personal friend of Assad, was travelling to Parisafter defecting from his position as a brigade commander in the elite Republican Guard.

Lauren Fabius, the French foreign minister, called the defection a serious blow to Assad s government, a sign that even his inner circle is starting to realise "that you cannot support a butcher," he said.

Missing powers

The meeting follows a gathering in Tunis and another in Istanbul, both of which called in vain for tougher action against Assad s government.

China and Russia did not attend either of those meetings, in which the United States, France, Britain, Germany as well as Saudi Arabia and Qatar gathered with a group of more than 60 nations, including most European Union and Arab League states.

On Friday, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton urged world powers to show Russia and China they would "pay a price" for impeding progress toward a democratic transition in Syria.

Japan likely to buy disputed islands

Posted:

The islands are at the center of a territorial dispute with China, a move that could elevate tensions between the Asian powerhouses.

Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda told reporters that he s considering nationalizing part of the islands to strengthen Japan s control over them amid China s increasing territorial claims in the region.

Surrounded by rich fishing grounds, the uninhabited islands called Senkaku in Japanese and Diaoyu in Chinese are claimed by China, Japan and Taiwan and are a frequent flash point in diplomatic relations.

Noda said Japan effectively controls the islands that are "undisputedly part of Japan s inherent territory by historical evidence and international law." But he acknowledged trying to purchase the islands from a private Japanese citizen, whom Japan says has legal ownership, as an option to strengthen their defense.

"We are talking to the owner as we make a comprehensive study of how we can maintain control over the islands peacefully and stably," Noda told reporters during his visit to the disaster-hit northern Japan.

China has said in the past that any unilateral measure taken by Japan concerning the islands is illegal and invalid.

Japan says it leased out the five main islands for free over 100 years ago, and that four of them have since been sold to private owners, with the fifth remaining state property.

The government pays rent on the four privately-owned islands to keep them from being sold to any questionable buyer.

It pays 24.5 million yen ($304,000) a year to a private Japanese citizen whom Japan says has legal ownership for three islands, which are unused, according to the parliamentary records. The fourth island, whose rent is not disclosed, is used by the U.S. military for drills.

Tokyo Gov. Shintaro Ishihara revealed in April that he was in purchase talks with the owner of the three islands, saying his move was largely intended to put pressure on the government to play a bigger role in the islands administration. He said he plans to use public funds to buy several islands.

Tokyo has already received more than 1.3 billion yen ($16.3 million) in donations for the purchase, which is expected to cost between 2 and 3 billion yen.

Southern Russia floods claim103 lives

Posted:

Intense flooding in the Black Sea region of southern Russia killed 103 people after torrential rains dropped nearly a foot of water, forcing many to scramble out of their beds for refuge in trees and on roofs, officials said Saturday.

Many people were asleep when the flooding hit overnight in the Krasnodar region, and the water rushed into the area around the hard-hit town of Krimsk with such speed and volume that rumors emerged that local officials had opened a nearby water reservoir. Muddy water coursed through streets and homes, in some cases high enough to flow over the hoods of cars and even as high as rooftops, according to witnesses.

People waded through waist-high water or maneuvered the streets in boats on Saturday. About 5,000 residences were flooded, the Krasnodar governor was quoted as telling the Interfax news agency.

The Interior Ministry gave the death toll as 103 on Saturday evening, according to Russian news agencies; a regional ministry spokesman said earlier that at least 67 of the deaths were around Krimsk, about 1,200 kilometers (750 miles) south of Moscow. Five people were electrocuted in the Black Sea coastal city of Gelendzhik after a transformer fell into the water, state news agency RIA Novosti said.

President Vladimir Putin flew to the region Saturday evening, viewing the damage from a helicopter. He will also meet with regional officials in Krimsk.

Gelendzhik is on the Black Sea coast, and along with the area around it, is a popular summer vacation spot, including many children s camps. Vice-premier Olga Golodets told RIA Novosti that some 7,100 children were at holiday camps in the area, and that 459 children had to be evacuated.

The area also includes Novorossiisk, a major Black Sea port. The Transneft oil company said Saturday it has suspended loading oil onto tankers at the port because of the severe weather.

More than 1,500 Emergency Ministry officials were working to aid flood victims and clean up the damage, state TV said.

Serena Williams claims fifth Wimbledon crown

Posted:

Williams claimed her 14th Grand Slam singles title, her fifth at the All England Club, matching sister Venus total.
With the victory, Williams becomes the first woman past her 30th birthday to win a major in 22 years. Martina Navratilova was the last to do so, capturing a ninth Wimbledon crown in 1990 at age 33.

Into the final, she was converting 92% of the time when she got her first serve in. And she set and broke records for aces, smacking 23 againstZheng Jie and upping that record with 24 against Victoria Azarenka in the semifinals.

The numbers dipped in the final — she won only 82% of her first-serve points, despite 17 aces. Near the end of the second set, Williams wobbled. Radwanksa finally broke through in the eighth game of the second set to get back on serve at 4-4. She broke again when Williams was serving to stay in the second set.

Williams took control of the third set with a break in the fifth game, held to 4-2 and then broke again to take a 5-2 lead. Then she held her serve, and her nerves, to close it out.

Radwanksa, a deft counterpuncher who plays great defense and chases down ball after ball, had dropped only one set on her way to the final, struggled to stay with Williams in the opening set.

A brief burst of rain caused a delay after the first set, but they waited it out — about 20 minutes — and the roof remained open.

Radwanksa, who had been battling a respiratory illness, found her game midway through the second set, after getting broken early.

Williams was a little shaky early in the tournament and was forced to tough out close three-set contests against Zheng in the third round and Shvedova in the fourth round before taking down 2011 Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova in the quarterfinals. Next came a tense semifinal victory against No. 2 Azarenka.
It has been a long road back since Williams last major crown.

A few days after winning the 2010 Wimbledon title, Williams cut her foot on glass at a Munich restaurant. The foot required two surgeries in the fall, one to repair a severed tendon.

Six months later, she suffered a pulmonary embolism, or blood clot, that traveled from her leg to her lungs. She then was hospitalized to remove a hematoma from her stomach that grew to the size of a grapefruit.

And just last month, she lost in the first round at the French Open, her first career loss in the opening round of a major.

Against restoring NATO supplies: DPC announces long march to parliament

LAHORE:

The long march on Sunday (today) against the resumption of NATO supplies through Pakistan shall be a step towards ending US influence in the country, speakers at a Difa-i-Pakistan Council (DPC) meeting said on Saturday.

Addressing the DPC All Parties Conference hosted by Jamatud Dawa (JD) at a private hall with Maulana Samiul Haq in chair, they announced that arrangements had been finalised for the march which would reach Islamabad in two days.

Participants of the meeting included the heads of several religious parties, ex-ISI chief General (retd) Hameed Gul and three ex-brigadiers, Nadir Mir, Hamid Saeed and Muhammad Hanif and Awami Muslim League head Sheikh Rasheed.

In his opening speech, Maulana Samiul Haq, said that the re-opening of NATO supplies was an insult to the parliament. On behalf of the participants of the APC, he demanded that the government resign.

He said that the long march was not just against re-opening NATO supplies but also against corruption, the increase in prices and power outages. He asked drivers, conductors, helpers and mechanics of NATO containers should refuse to work on them since advancing the NATO supply was an "un-Islamic act."

Qari Mansoor Ahmed, representative of Tehreek Ghalba-i-Islam, told the participants that stopping NATO supplies was a favour to the Taliban. "Our party is fighting against US forces in Afghanistan shoulder to shoulder with the Taliban and will do whatever it takes to ensure NATO supplies remain suspended," he said. "It is an effective tool of jihad (just war)." He said they were aligned with the DPC in line with their chief, Maulana Abdul Jabbar's orders.

JD chief Hafiz Muhammad Saeed said that DPC had played a role in keeping NATO supplies suspended for eight months. He said that the DPC believed in non-violent protest and aimed at cutting off NATO supply lines. He said that they hoped to ensure the exit of US forces from the region.

He expressed his apprehension that suicide attacks would start again if the supply line is re-opened and the US stay in the region would be extended.

Introduced as a "symbol of jihad" by the stage secretary, General (retd) Hameed Gul said that the government had announced it would reopen NATO supplies under pressure.

He said that if an agriculturally rich country such as Pakistan could not uphold its sovereignty, no one in the world could do so.

"It is tragic if the decision to re-open supply lines was taken unanimously by the civil and military leadership," he said.

He said that the supply line agreement was for an unlimited period despite the NATO announcement to leave by 2014. "Parliamentary permission will allow US forces to attack any region in Pakistan or conduct Combat Air Patrol (CAP) if its supply line is attacked," he said.

He said that the US was attempting to divert Chinese influence away from Pakistan and de-nuclearise, de-Islamise and divide it. "The notion that NATO will not be allowed to transport 'lethal weapons' is strange. All weapons are lethal and used against humanity," he said.

Munawar Hassan, chief of the Jamaat-i-Islami, said that government must act according to mandate or this movement will continue. He said that missing persons and drone attacks were the result of the US war on terror.

Sheikh Rasheed, the APML chief, said that only religious parties can take a principled stand against the US. He asked the government to step down. He also said that the Islamic faith could not be complete without believing in jihad.

Later, addressing a media briefing, Maulana Samiul Haq said they will proceed towards Islamabad through GT Road from Nasser Bagh on Sunday at 10 am. He said they would reach Gujrat on Sunday where they will spend the night. He said that they will reach D Ground Islamabad in front of the Parliament House on July 9 where they will hold a procession and deliver speeches.

He said that this was the first phase of their protests. He said that protest marches will be held on the NATO supply routes; from Quetta to Chaman, Karachi to Hyderabad, Multan to Dera Ghazi Khan, Sargodha to Mianwali, Peshawar to Khyber Pass, Rawalpindi to Chakwal Talagang, Faisalabad to Sargodha, Khushab and Islamabad, during the second phase of the protests.

Review: Meray Dard Ko Jo Zuban Miley : Episode 3
Jul 7th 2012, 17:36

What a horrifying development in what has been a very simple story till now; this was a very intense episode and a great deal happened today. Abdur Rehman killed at the hands of robbers and Urooj struggling to recover from bullet wounds, I really did not see that coming. Everything that happened in today's episode totally took me by surprise and I can't imagine the repercussions it will have for everyone, whether it is Ahmed Ali, Urooj or most of all Zakiya. I must add here that Bushra Ansari's acting was beyond brilliant today, her reaction to everything that happened was spot-on.

So, there is more to Zakiya and Kamran's relationship than it appears on the surface. In the last episode it was great to see Zakiya not getting blackmailed into giving money to Razia for Kamran's bail but it seems like Kamran is going to " go the extra mile" to get what he wants. Zakiya's character has really caught my attention, I can't remember the last time I saw such a balanced character on-screen. She is strong but sensitive and very smart at the same time. I hope she will not fall for Kamran's 'blackmail' and will prove to be the intelligent woman that she has been so far. How well she is going to do with dealing with the 'conspiracies' surrounding the business, is a big question mark.

I have to say that all the characters in this play are very relatable and they are the kind of people you and me are, nothing extraordinary or superhuman about them. Abdur Rehman, even after everything that happened was willing to help out his employee, the gullibility in his character made it easier to relate to. Unfortunately, Abdur Rehman never mentioned any of it to Zakiya so she has absolutely has no clue.

Abdur Rehman and Zakiya had such a strong bond and I am waiting to see how Zakiya will cope without him, there is so much to look forward to after what happened today. One thing I really appreciate about Abdur Rehman and Zakiya is that although they really want that Urooj should Marry Amina but cannot muster up the courage to ask Ahmed, even with all their wealth they realize that money is not everything and they cannot misuse Ahmed Ali's friendship.

All the characters in this play big or small are very well portrayed. The picture quality is excellent and the play definitely has the flow to keep you glued to your TV screens. The only quibble I had today was that it seemed like there were way too many commercials and too little of the drama…or did I just feel that way? The play did not start till 8 15 and 15 minutes later there was an advertisement break again, that of course would mean that the play is doing great but I felt like I watched more commercials today than the actual play. Nevertheless, it made for a very exciting episode.
