The flawed system of TV ratings
Sep 24th 2012, 16:39

Private TV channels are revenue based. This revenue comes from advertisements they get for their different programs. Advertisers run their ads in programs most watched by viewers. The data of which program is the most watched one is provided in Pakistan by Television Ratings Agency Medialogic in collaboration with Gallup.

The rating agency Medialogic uses a device called People Meter for monitoring viewership of different programs in different time slots. These people meters are connected with TV sets in selected households and record television viewing data on the basis of which ratings or Television Rating Points (TRPs) are determined for different programs on a daily basis. This data is used by TV channels as well as advertisers to keep tabs of the programs being watched/not watched by audiences.

The most watched programs get the maximum ads while the not-so-popular ones see a change in their time slot. In addition to time slots, show hosts and formats are changed on the basis of ratings. Internationally, stories or tracks of ongoing dramas are changed in order to improve ratings. However, this is not the case in Pakistan as in most cases the entire story and production is also done before the airing of the drama. Thus the only option available to TV channels is to change the time slot of the drama.

Many channels especially ARY is famous for doing this. Neeyat, Kala Jadoo, Shadi Mubarak, Kuch Khawab thay meray, Topi Drama you name it and they have changed its timings. Recently, Hum TV has also replaced its Saturday night drama 'Meray Dard ko Jo Zuban Milay' with 'Bari Aapa' as it was not getting the 'expected ratings' at Saturday night prime time slot.

Geo has also done it on numerous occasions. For instance, it moved 'Meray Charagar' featuring Ayesha Khan and Ahsan Khan from Saturday night to Tuesday night as it wasn't getting good ratings as compared to Hum TV's blockbuster Humsafar aired at the same time. The timings of Ik Nazar Meri Taraf were also changed many times and it was made a sandwich between 8-9pm programming.

Many times, TV channels run multiple episodes of a play during a week or wrap two episodes in one go in order to finish their low rated dramas. This happened recently in case of Geo's controversial 'Behkawa' and Express Entertainment's 'Chandni' and 'Baat hai ruswai ki'.

However, the reliability of the ratings data gathered through people meters remains questionable. The official website of Medialogic tells you that they have installed 600 people meters in four major cities of the country i.e. Karachi, Lahore, Rawalpindi and Islamabad. There is disagreement over the number of people meters and number of cities. Many claim that people meters run in thousands and the number of cities is also more than four. Even if that's the case, a sample size of few thousands in few metro cities only cannot be reflective of a population of 180 million people.

Moreover, Television viewing today is not just limited to TV programs being viewed in our living rooms, bed rooms, hotels, cafes and shops. Sizeable number of people watch TV programs especially dramas on internet or Youtube to be precise. Overseas Pakistanis especially watch dramas on Internet and Youtube as all Pakistani TV Channels are not available in every country of the world. The rating agency should take into account Internet hits on any specific drama episode or show episode before reaching to a final rating.

Many rating providers available on facebook and other Internet sites take into account Youtube hits, thus their rating is different from the one provided by the rating agency or people meters. You also see claims by different channels that their drama is the highest in rating. What these channels do is that during the one-hour slot they pick the quarter i.e. those fifteen minutes wherein the rating of their drama was the highest and project it as the overall rating of the episode thus misleading the audiences.

In order to move forward, sizeable number of additional people meters should be installed so that the ratings become reflective of the population and Internet hits should also be considered while reaching to a final rating of any program/episode of a drama. Otherwise this system of ratings based on few people meters gives distorted ratings, restricts the creativity of producers and TV channels and prevents them from undertaking new challenges and exploring new frontiers.
