A simple solution to Pakistan's economic conundrum

The Delicatessen gives something new to Lahore foodies

Momina Sibtain

Grab and go food culture has not really hit Pakistan. The concept of power lunches is still benign and inconsistent, and as far as Lahore is concerned, the only option most working people have is to grab a bakery sandwich from Coffee, Tea and Company or Kitchen Cuisine and, worse yet, a fast food chain. But here's the good news: a conceptualised new eatery that focuses on quick grab and go items has opened its doors. In other words, Lahore opens up its very first deli: The Delicatessen.

Amid haggling, PTI delays intra-party elections

ISLAMABAD:

Differences in Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf's (PTI) party cadres have reportedly led chairman Imran Khan to indefinitely delay intra-party elections, according to some sources.

To justify his decision, the PTI chairman has extended the party's ongoing membership campaign, without setting a clear deadline for its conclusion.

"Imran assented to the point of view of two party leaders, who had asked the PTI chief to first prepare for the general elections," said a party leader while talking to The Pak Sar Zameen.

According to sources, party president Javed Hashmi and Additional Secretary General Saifullah Niazi, as well as some influential members of the steering committee, had recommended 'putting off party elections' for now.

Earlier, Imran had dissolved all regional bodies by constituting regional steering committees in all the provinces, a move that aimed to pave way for holding party elections.

However, the party's top leadership held many meetings to resolve all outstanding issues but failed to generate an agreement to hold intra-party polls before the next general elections.

"PTI is unlikely to hold elections at the council level before the general elections," said one of the sources.

New inductees into the party, especially Sikander Hayat Bosan and Javed Hashmi, had advised Imran Khan to focus on the next general elections first.

While talking to The Pak Sar Zameen, Bosan said that he had opposed the idea of holding intra-party polls first, since that would take the focus away from the challenge of the general elections.

On the other hand, some leaders from the old guard had wanted intra-party elections to precede the general elections.

Party hierarchy

According to sources, there were serious differences among the echelons of the party leadership over the exact framework to be followed in formulating a party hierarchy as well.

Party leaders including Khursheed Mehmood Kasuri, Sardar Assef Ahmed Ali, Sikandar Bosan, Jamal Khan Leghari, Mian Azhar and Mian Mehmood Rashid had conveyed their concerns, highlighting the fact that they had not been given any party office as yet.

They had also opposed direct nomination of seven new senior vice presidents as well as a president without holding appropriate consultations.

"The decision not to hold party elections was based on the fact that the party's constitutional document is still being studied by its legal attorneys," said a senior leader, while talking to The Pak Sar Zameen.

When asked to comment, Khursheed Kasuri dismissed these differences as trivial, adding that all emerging parties undergo such challenges.

"The PTI is an emerging political party so differences are a part of the democratic cycle," he pointed out.

Leftists poised to win French elections

French voters are choosing a new parliament Sunday that will determine how far Socialist President Francois Hollande can push for economic stimulus in France and around a debt-burdened, stagnant Europe.

Six weeks after Hollande won the presidency, his fellow Socialists and their political allies were expected to win control of the 577-seat National Assembly in Sunday s second round of legislative elections.

The Socialists dominated the first round last week and pollsters predict they will win the most seats in the lower house. That would wrench it from the hands of former President Nicolas Sarkozy s conservatives, who have led it for a decade.

The campaign focused on local issues but the outcome will determine the country s political direction, which has Europe-wide importance. France is the second-biggest economy in the eurozone and, along with powerhouse Germany, contributes heavily to bailouts to weaker nations and often drives EU-wide policy.

Coming so soon after Hollande s victory, the parliamentary race has faced the risk of voter fatigue. At 5 p.m. in France, turnout was just under 46.2 percent on the French mainland nearly 3-1/2 percentage points fewer than five years ago and slightly less than the figure a decade ago.

The elections come after a hasty new bailout for Spanish banks and on the same day as crucial voting in Greece. The Greek elections may determine whether the country stays in the euro, with repercussions for all the other 16 countries that use the joint currency.

After budget-tightening in France under Sarkozy that leftists warned would send France back into recession, Hollande is pushing for government-sponsored stimulus to encourage growth.

That has met opposition from German Chancellor Angela Merkel as the two try to stem Europe s crisis. Hollande presented other European leaders last week with a new "growth pact" that includes €120 billion ($151 billion) worth of measures around the continent to stimulate growth, French newspaper Journal du Dimanche reported Sunday. The paper said it obtained a copy of an 11-page letter on the issue sent to Merkel and other European counterparts.

Markets have been worried about higher spending when France s debts are so high.
Hollande, a moderate and mainstream leftist who is committed to European unity, is hoping to get an absolute majority of 289 seats for the Socialists to avoid having to make concessions to the Euro-skeptic far left.

In a well-off area of central Paris, voter Eve Baume said she cast her ballot for the local Socialist, Claire Morel, "because I ve been waiting for change for a long time. ...
