Cricket: Bangladesh renew hopes of revival

KARACHI: While 'no one is interested in coming to Pakistan', Bangladesh, with memories of the last-minute u-turn still fresh, has handed the former world champions renewed hopes of reviving international cricket here.

According to a Pakistan Cricket Board official, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) chief Mustafa Kamal met PCB chairman Zaka Ashraf in Kuala Lumpur to discuss prospects of playing in Pakistan. The BCB had to postpone their brief tour in April following a Dhaka court ruling. However, both chiefs met yesterday on the sidelines of the International Cricket Council's (ICC) Annual Conference where Kamal informed Ashraf that his board has received the government's consent.

"The BCB chief said that things will be clear after the court hearing which is taking place on July 12," the official told The Pak Sar Zameen. "Kamal has assured the PCB chairman that Bangladesh will send their team at the earliest possible time after getting the court's clearance on the tour. It's a sort of a breakthrough. The PCB continues to strive for a return of international cricket in Pakistan."

Pakistan have not hosted a Test nation since 2009 while the most of the boards showed reluctance to tour Pakistan on Ashraf's invitation in Kuala Lumpur when the PCB chief confirmed that no board wanted to tour the country due to the security situation.

Bangladesh expressed interest in touring Pakistan for a two-match series which would have been the first time a Test nation visited the country since the Lahore attack on the Sri Lankan team bus in March 2009.

Euro 2012: Balotelli double downs Germany as Italy march on

WARSAW: Striker Mario Balotelli struck twice to seal Italy’s 2-1 semi-final win over Germany on Thursday to leave the Germans’ Euro 2012 ambitions in tatters while the Azzurri march on to the final.

The 21-year-old Manchester City star broke German hearts with a first-half header and sublime strike as Joachim Loew’s inexperienced team — the youngest of the 16 at Euro 2012 — failed to cope with Cesare Prandelli’s street-wise Italians.

A late penalty from Mesut Ozil proved no more than a consolation score for the Germans whose 16-year wait for a major title continues.

Italy are now into Sunday’s final in Kiev to face defending champions Spain with the Italians bidding to win their first European crown since 1968.

Victory at Warsaw’s National Stadium means Italy maintain their impressive record of having never lost to Germany at a World Cup or European Championships on their eighth meeting at a major tournament.

Having dropped three of his forwards for last Friday’s 4-2 quarter-final win over Greece, Loew again tinkered with his starting line-up, but this time it back-fired as the Germans lacked an effective Plan B when things went wrong.

Arsenal-bound Lukas Podolski was hauled off at half-time, striker Mario Gomez also made way for 34-year-old veteran Miroslav Klose after the break, while Toni Kroos barely troubled the Italian defence from the right wing.

Germany had a couple of golden chances early on, but the Azzurri soon asserted themselves and after Riccardo Montolivo tested Germany goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, Italy took the lead on 20 minutes.

Antonio Cassano ghosted through two German defenders and crossed for Balotelli to beat his marker Holger Badstuber and slam his header past Neuer.

It was the first time since the Euro 2008 final Germany had fallen behind in a European Championship match after their ten wins in qualifying and their four wins so far at Euro 2012.

The perplexed looks in the German ranks told their own tale.

Rattled, the Germans tried to reassert themselves with Mesut Ozil and Gomez both squandering half chances, but Italy captain Gianluigi Buffon stood up to the challenge in goal before the Azzurri struck again.

A sublime pass from Fiorentina’s Montolivo split the German defence and gave Balotelli all the space he needed to curl his shot past Neuer on 36 minutes.

With the Germans now reeling, Reus was quickly into the action after replacing Podolski and tested Buffon with a well-struck free-kick with an hour gone.

But the Italians were not to be denied their first European final since their Euro 2000 defeat to France when Claudio Marchisio fired wide on 67 minutes and again eight minutes later.

Balotelli made way for Antonio Di Natale on 70 minutes and with time running out, the Udinese forward missed a golden chance with the German defence all at sea.

A handball by Federico Balzaretti in the 92nd minute gave Germany brief hope as referee Stephane Lannoy pointed to the spot and Ozil blasted home the spot-kick, but it was too little, too late.

The Azzurri can now dream of denying world and European champions Spain a third consecutive major title on Sunday.

Nadal suffers shock Wimbledon defeat

Sharapova, Serena Williams win at Wimbledon

On the verge of victory, Maria Sharapova briefly lost her bearings. Sharapova s old serving problems resurfaced Thursday at Wimbledon, costing her the second set before she recovered to beat dangerous Tsvetana Pironkova, 7-6 (3), 6-7 (3), 6-0.

The Court 1 match took two days and ended three minutes after Serena Williams concluded her second-round victory on Centre Court, beating qualifier Melinda Czink 6-1, 6-4.

The No. 1-ranked Sharapova saved five set points in the first set and led the second set 3-1 when play was halted Tuesday because of darkness. She lost the first two games when the match resumed, and double-faulted on her first three service points in the tiebreaker.

"It felt like two matches in a way," Sharapova said. "Today I wanted to start off really well because I knew I was up a break. Didn t go according to plan. Really served sloppy."

Sharapova underwent shoulder surgery in 2008 and has been prone to double-faults, but in the final set she had no trouble with her serve or anything else. She won 21 of the last 27 points and finished with just 11 unforced errors.

Pironkova, ranked 38th, beat Venus Williams at Wimbledon each of the past two years,

"If she played on grass 365 days a year, she d be top five probably," Sharapova said. "She has the perfect game for it."

But Sharapova s at her best in winner-take-all sets. She improved her record in three-set matches to 9-0 this year and 21-1 since the beginning of 2011.

She has won 14 consecutive matches, including the French Open this month to complete a career Grand Slam.

While Sharapova battled an erratic serve, with eight aces and 10 double-faults, four-time champion Serena Williams had no such trouble. Czink twice whiffed on returns.

"I love my serve," Williams said, "and I love feeling good when I serve."

The sixth-seeded Williams could meet Sharapova in the final next week. Serbia: Mammoth graveyard discovered at coal mining site

Posted:

Serbian archaeologists have found a large graveyard of mammoths, recently discovered at an excavation site for coal.

They were found near the town Kostolac, some 100 km east of the capital Belgrade.

Heavy rain recently exposed the remains of what could be up to seven mammoths, not far from a site where other remains of the extinct animals had been uncovered in 2009.

Director of the Archaeological Project Viminacium, Miomir Korac, said that the discovery came as a complete surprise.

"On every 30 metres we found mammoth bones, so at the moment we have seven groups of mammoth bones, which are visible, that s very impressive number, don t forget that we are in process of excavation, we now have to dig down to 100 metres , so I am sure that we might find something else, besides mammoths, maybe some other beings which lived next to mammoths, this is fantastic," Korac told Reuters Television.

The archaeologists were first alerted to one set of mammoth remains that was damaged by mining machinery. But heavy rain later rinsed away the remains.

Korac s team will now use infrared screening to get a better idea of what lies below the surface and check if there are additional mammoth bones.

"That s why we have a group of experts from all scientific fields, we will do infra red scanning of all the areas, experts for paleobotany and Palaeozoic era will do their research, we have to find out, what type of climate was then. And then, maybe we will be able to determine why we have such a group of mammoths here so, so maybe we would be able to say what really and why it happened here," said Korac.

The location covers an area of some 20,000 square metres on what could have been an island in the Pannonian Sea.

Just a kilometre away, the first prehistoric skeleton was discovered in 2009. The bones belonged to a female mammoth, that was later named Vika, which is now one of the biggest scientific attractions in Serbia. Experts concluded that Vika drowned in swamp mud.

These particular creatures lived in the range of 100,000 years ago to as long as one million years ago, Serbian and international scientist estimate.

Experts believe that either some sort of catastrophe struck a herd, killing all the mammoths in the same place, or the first mammoths "graveyard" has indeed been found.

Turkey fortifies Syrian border; bomb hits Damascus

Turkey deployed anti-aircraft guns, rocket launchers and other weapons along its border with Syria on Thursday, a military buildup that came as world powers showed new urgency to resolve the crisis before it ignites the region.

A bomb exploded in central Damascus near a busy market and the country s main justice complex, wounding at least three people, damaging cars in a parking lot and sending a black cloud rising above the Syrian capital. It was not clear who was behind the bombing.

Much of the violence that has gripped Syria since the uprising began in March 2011 has been sanctioned by the government of President Bashar Assad to crush dissent. Activists say more than 14,000 people have been killed.

But rebel fighters are launching increasingly deadly attacks on regime targets, and several massive suicide attacks this year suggest al-Qaida or other extremists are joining the fray.

Assad told Iranian state TV Thursday that his country still supports him, and he warned that any intervention in Syria will cause a "domino" effect in the region. He has given similar warnings before, saying the entire Middle East will go up in flames if others meddle in his country.

Turkey, a former ally of Syria, has become one of the strongest critics of the Assad regime, and tensions between the two countries spiked following the downing of a Turkish military plane last week.

A small convoy of Turkish military trucks towing anti-aircraft guns entered a military outpost in the border village of Guvecci, which faces a Syrian military outpost, according to TRT television video.

Several anti-aircraft guns also have been deployed elsewhere along the border. Some trucks were seen carrying self-propelled multiple rocket launchers, the video showed.

Ties between Turkey and Syria have not been this low since the late 1990s, when the neighbors almost went to war. Tensions ran high in the 1980s and 1990s as Turkey developed military ties with Israel and Syria sheltered Turkish Kurd guerrilla leader Abdullah Ocalan.

Now, Turkey is hosting civilian opposition groups as well as hundreds of military defectors who are affiliated with the rebel Free Syrian Army.

Syria insists the Turkish military plane it shot down on June 22 had violated its airspace. Turkey says the jet had unintentionally strayed into Syria s airspace and was inside international airspace when it was brought down over the Mediterranean by Syria.

The search for two missing pilots continued in Syrian waters but hopes for their survival are dim, Turkish authorities said. The Turkish military said search teams have found some pieces of the plane as well as equipment belonging to the pilots.

Uzbekistan quits Russia-dominated security pact

Uzbekistan has suspended its participation in a Russia-dominated security pact of ex-Soviet nations, officials said Thursday, a move that reflected tensions inside the grouping.

The Collective Security Treaty Organization s spokesman, Vladimir Zainetdinov, said Thursday that it received a note from Uzbekistan declaring the suspension of its involvement in the seven-nation alliance. Zainetdinov wouldn t comment on possible motives behind the move, and Uzbek officials couldn t be reached for comment. The grouping also includes Russia, Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan.

Russia has touted the CSTO as an ex-Soviet response to NATO, but the pact has remained amorphous and weakened by differences among its members. The pact members created a joint rapid reaction force that held sporadic maneuvers, but its numbers were small and its mission unclear.

Uzbekistan has refrained from contributing its troops to the force in an apparent reluctance to give Russia too much clout.

Uzbekistan left the grouping once before in 1999, but returned in 2006, reflecting its strongman ruler s often unpredictable decisions.

Uzbek President Islam Karimov was the country s Communist Party boss and stayed at its helm after the 1991 Soviet collapse. International rights groups list Uzbekistan among the world s most corrupt and repressive nations.

Over the past two decades, the 74-year old Karimov has maneuvered between Russia and the West, periodically shifting loyalties.

Karimov allowed the United States to use a major air base for the war in Afghanistan after the September 11, 2001, terror attacks, but he fell out with the U.S. and other Western nations after violently cracking down on a 2005 uprising in the city of Andijan and moved to boost ties with Moscow. In recent years, Karimov has sought to mend ties with the West while Uzbekistan s relations with Russia have grown colder.

Vladimir Zharikhin, a Moscow-based political expert studying the ex-Soviet nations, told the RIA Novosti news agency that Uzbekistan s decision had been prompted by "Karimov s intention to flirt with the U.S." He added that the Uzbek leader later may again lurch in the opposite direction.

Also under Karimov, Uzbekistan s ties with its Central Asian neighbors often have been strained amid a series of disputes over borders and water-sharing.

In Tajikistan, head of the parliamentary defense committee Amirkul Azimov criticized Uzbekistan s move.

"Uzbekistan s decision doesn t help collective security in the region," he was quoted as saying by RIA Novosti.

Azimov said that the planned withdrawal of NATO forces from Afghanistan would leave a "hornet s nest" threatening Central Asia.

Nikolai Fedoryak, a deputy chief of the defense and security committee in the upper house of the Russian parliament, also said that Uzbekistan may regret its decision after U.S. and other forces leave Afghanistan as scheduled by the end of 2014.

"It s regrettable that Uzbekistan made that move without a thorough analysis of its consequences," he told the Interfax news agency.

Energy crisis: PM refrains from giving deadline

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Raja Pervaiz Ashraf said on Thursday that dealing with the energy crisis was the government's number one priority since it is a major challenge faced by the nation, but refrained from giving a deadline.

"We are making all efforts to improve the condition of the power sector and are on our way towards betterment."

Speaking to the media outside the National Power Control Center (NPCC) in Islamabad after a high-level meeting with ministers, the prime minister said that he understood the challenges in the power sector, citing his past experience as the power minister.

He insisted that there has been an improvement in the loadshedding problem, adding that he did not want to make any tall claims and wanted the public to feel the difference for themselves.

The ministers who attended the meeting included Minister of Water and Power, Minister of Petroleum, Minister of Information and Broadcasting, Minister Kashmir Affairs and Minister of Defence.

When inquired regarding a timeline to when the energy crisis would be resolved, Ashraf avoided answering and said that he had been widely criticised for his [tall] claims in the past for never meeting his deadlines and did not want to comment on it this time around.

He said that everyone, including the opposition, political forces and stakeholders in the power sector, needed to work together to combat this problem, adding that stakeholders in the power sector were already working with 'collective wisdom' and making well coordinated efforts in this regard.

When asked why his claim of uniform loadshedding throughout the country was not being implemented, Pervaiz replied that he had directed the Water and Power Ministry to ensure uniform loadshedding throughout the country, however, he clarified that loadshedding was being done on the basis of 'allocated quota' and 'proportionately'.

The prime minister also requested for harmony in the country and an end to blame games.
