Are Pakistani Dramas Losing their Charm?
Sep 13th 2012, 17:52

There was a time when Ptv used to be the only TV channel and the only source of entertainment for us. The 8pm drama was something that the viewers eagerly looked forward to and streets used to be deserted during this time period as people watched TV plays in their homes, hotels, road sides and friends and relatives' places. This trend of 8pm drama spilled on in private television programming also and channels saved their best dramas for the 8pm slot.

8-9pm is still labeled prime time wherein there is maximum viewership and maximum ad revenue is earned. Some channels have moved their prime time dramas to 8:30 rather than 8 but the majority is still airing its dramas on 8pm.

Even with all the choices available nowadays, none of the dramas fits the bill and the viewers do not look forward to these plays as eagerly as they used to at one time. There are good dramas, bad dramas and passable ones also but whenever you miss one or even a few episodes of any drama, you don't feel that you have missed much. Here is the list of some of the dramas nowadays and the reasons why they fail to attract a wide range of viewers.

1. Sher-e-Zaat:

The prime time dramas of today hold nothing of the charm of Humsafar, Daam, Dastan, Parsaa, Meri Zaat Zarra Benishan, Mera Naseeb, Roag, Mein Abdul Qadir Hoon, Diya Jalay etc. Yes, there's a Shehr e Zaat but it suffers from an oft-repeated theme extra marital affair and loss of interest in marriage. It suffers from Mahira's good-bad acting and expressions and same theme of turning towards religion once you are rejected by humans. It can be called a good drama but again due to Mahira's acting and oft-repeated theme it's not a must-watch drama for many.

2. Ashk:

There is Ashk also but too verbose and talk heavy scenes, little or no movement in story and abundance of drinking and liquor scenes makes it unbearable. The only saving grace here is the super star Fawad Afzal Khan due to whom most people watch this serial which is a total disaster to say the least and is sad misuse of a lot of money and resources.

3. Roshan Sitara:

Roshan Sitara which airs on Hum TV again has same story of a greedy mother marrying off a girl against her wishes and despite having Sanam Baloch in a double story, its story doesn't seem to be going anywhere.

4. Maseeha:

Maseeha boasts of a great talent Ayesha Khan but weak and illogical story and poor acting by others make it a very ordinary fare and something which you can definitely miss.

5. Mi Raqsam:

Mi Raqsam is an effort by the acclaimed director Sabiha Sumar but perhaps what works for a movie doesn't necessarily works for a tv drama. It will take time for Sabiha to learn this if she's to continue making dramas. Her debut drama is more of an extended version of Khuda Aur Muhabbat and is so depressing that most people don't watch it.

6. Yeh Zindagi hai:

Geo's Yeh Zindagi Hai should now be named Yeh torture hai. Jameela's gone but her duplicate beggar look alike is there and this serial is nothing less of an Indian soap with characters dying and reappearing, frequent use of fowl language, physically aggressive behavior and nonsensical story. I wonder why is it on air and who's watching it.

7.  Sabz Pari Laal Kabootar :

Sabz Pari Laal Kabootar is a novel theme dealing with poverty and its related issues but is lost in gamut of other serials. Again it's a good effort and can be called a good drama but depressing theme and slow-moving story stops it from becoming a must-watch.

8. Quddusi Sahab kee bewa:

ARY's Quddusi Sahab kee bewa having Hina Dilpazeer in multiple roles is too bold, boasts of vulgar dialogues and open flirtations and is definitely not a family drama thus limiting its appeal and charm

9. Thakaan:

Thakan of the same channel has an ages old story of a girl being made to work for her selfish family with no one really caring for her or bothering for her feelings and happiness. Had it not been for Saba Qamar, this serial would have lost major chunk of its audience for it holds nothing new for us audience.

10:  Aks :

Aks could be a good drama but has just started out so too early to comment on it except that it has same theme of sisters pitted against each other vying for same man. Let's wait and watch what does it have in store for us.

This pretty much sums up the dramas on air on different channels. I might have missed some dramas but again they were not great either and hardly anybody is addicted to them, so no harm done. I seriously wish, hope and pray that we get to see some really good, addictive and must-watch prime time dramas soon. This overdose of same themes, depressing stuff, mediocre acting and misfit actors is driving us away from our tv screens.

Interesting Facts About Our Favorite Actors:
Sep 14th 2012, 13:32

I am always very curious to find out how many of our talented actors landed up in the industry. There are many actors who suddenly caught my attention and I could not help but wonder when and how they started their career and there are those who have always been there, or so it seems! So I put my inquisitive mind into action by getting information regarding these actors. Some of them were instant hits, others took time to grow on the viewers but all of them proved that they belong in the entertainment world. It is very interesting how most of these actors never went out looking for this career but it was more of fate or chance that landed them in showbiz. I thought I should share with you guys some interesting facts about how these actors started their careers and if any of you knows something that I don't, please do share.

1. Mikaal Zulfiqar:

Yes, we all love this multitalented entertainer, Mikaal slowly made a place for himself in the industry and is not only a wonderful performer but also a heart throb. Do you people remember seeing him on screen for the first time? Well, those of you who don't let me refresh your memory, Mikaal made his first TV appearance in Ibrar-ul-Haq's song "Menu Tere Naal Pyaar Ho Gaya", and little did we know that this young model will one day be a versatile actor.

2. Marina Khan

Shehzad Khalil wanted Marina to play one of the lead roles in Tanhayaan but Haseena Moin was very apprehensive about it because Marina was a newbie and her command on Urdu was not exactly impressive. Marina was asked to audition in order to convince the writer, she performed a scene from the Ankahi script for her audition. Marina Khan used to arrive hours before all the other actors on the set of Tanhayaan and practice because not being proficient in Urdu was a huge barrier which she managed to overcome with her hard work.

3. Mohib Mirza:

Mohib's story is more interesting than anyone elses. Mohib formed his own theatre company Dramaybazz in the late 90s because he did not have enough money to fund his studies. Mohib and his group of friends wrote and directed a play and it got very good response and he and his friends ended up collecting more money than they needed! That is how Mohib was noticed by many and offers started pouring in. How interesting.

4. Sarwat Gillani:

Sarwat Gillani is another actress who entered showbiz by chance; she never planned to enter the industry, in fact never even dreamed of it. Sarwat went to pick her sister from a location where she was shooting for a commercial and there she was spotted by a director looking for a young girl to play a role in his drama. This was the first step for Sarwat and after that there was no stopping her.

5. Faisal Rehman:

Faisal Rehman started acting at the age of 14 but the primary reason for him continuing acting was not because he liked it but due to financial constraints. He never liked acting because he thought there was too much pressure and always wanted to be a diplomat. Even after pursuing acting for many years, the monotony got to him and he left for Canada. According to him his trip to Canada was a life changing experience and he realized that he was meant to be an actor. He has no qualms in admitting that he is lazy and acting is what suits him best because it comes naturally to him.

Did You Know That….

1. Tahira Wasti was Maria Wasti's aunt (Khala).

2. Ayeza Khan's birth name was Kinza Khan.

3. Saba Qamar's birth name is Sabahat Qamar.

4. When Bushra Ansari was only nine years old she managed to convince her mother to take her to the PTV studio for an audition that is how her acting career started, she was obviously born to perform.

5. Faria and Noor Bukhari are sisters; here is a picture of the two of them together.

Review: Zard Mausam: Episode 20
Sep 13th 2012, 17:28

Tahir is back (with a bang, if I may add!); the good thing about this latest development is that we will get to see some more of Mohib Mirza's excellent acting but the bad thing is that Aimen's life is spinning out of control again. Just when we thought that Aimen realized her mistake and wanted to start afresh, Tahir came out of nowhere. I am sure we can all tell by his living standards where he put all the money that he "stole" from his grandfather. To me it seems like Tahir is making another cock and bull story and he just disappeared so that he could get Aimen off of his back. Now that he knows that Aimen is married to a rich man and also that the house is in Aimen's name, he has more of a reason to convince Aimen to leave Tariq and marry him.

I honesty thought that Aimen had entered into this new relationship with Tariq wholeheartedly but it was after all a "samjhota". Had she accepted this union with all her heart, it would not have been so easy for Tahir to convince Aimen to go back to him. The scene between Mehru and Aimen suggested that these two are not meant to be mother and daughter. I actually enjoy the "subtle" war of words between Aimen and Mehrunissa, such scenes leave a great deal to the imagination. The expressions on Mehru's face when Aimen asks her to cook for her damaad suggested a great deal. I must give Ayza Khan due credit here for acting so well and for not letting her confidence shake considering she is working with one of the most versatile actors in the industry. She manages to keep her performance at the same footing as Sania Saeed, which is a very big deal.

Tahir once again is playing the same old mind games with Aimen, trying to put ideas in her head regarding her husband's sincerity towards her and also giving references to the way the two were married. Mohib Mirza we totally love you as Junaid and we can't help but despise Tahir for being so greedy and selfish, now that is what I call versatility.

Momo's life seems to be revolving around the love of her life and I have my serious reservations about that boy, he does not seem genuine at all. The scene between Momo and Aimen was very well-done, for the first time the two interacted with each other like sisters and Aimen did keep her secret. But my favorite scene had to be when Aimen sits on her bed wondering what was she to do, the music playing in the background and Ayza Khan's expressions made that scene a treat to watch.

I thoroughly enjoyed today's episode, this was yet another episode of Zard Mausam with a new twist that took me by surprise. This was the 20th episode, so I am thinking there will be five more episodes of this show, which would mean a lot more drama and more interesting developments. The acting remained top notch in this episode, just like all the previous ones and the direction was spot on too. Zard Mausam is definitely another feather in the cap of Hum TV, I can only wonder why it is not getting the appreciation it deserves.
