Russia, Poland play out 1-1 draw in Group A

Posted:

Alan Dzagoev scored his third goal of the European Championship, and Jakub Blaszczykowski scored what will surely be one of the goals of the tournament.

With hooligans fighting one another and police away from the stadium, Russia and Poland played out a 1-1 draw Tuesday. The result left Russia at the top of Group A, but all four teams still have a chance to qualify for the quarterfinals.

Dzagoev was first to score Tuesday. He darted past defender Lukasz Piszczek in the 37th minute and sent a glancing header beyond goalkeeper Przemyslaw Tyton after a curling free kick from Andrei Arshavin.

Russia continued to push forward after the goal, allowing Poland to equalize on the counter in the 57th when Blaszczykowski cut in from the right and sent a searing left-foot drive into the far corner of the goal.

At least 15 people were injured in fighting between fans. Polish police also fired rubber bullets and tear gas at a group of young Poles who attacked them with glass bottles.

The violence erupted around a group of thousands of Russian fans who marched in a cordon of riot police across a bridge over the Vistula River to the National Stadium to celebrate the Russia Day national holiday.

The march was seen as a provocation by many Poles, who share a difficult history with Russia, including decades of control by Moscow during the Cold War. Many Poles felt the authorities should not have allowed the Russians to march as a group in Warsaw given the historical wounds.

Russia s football federation pleaded with its fans to behave after video emerged online of supporters beating stewards at the Municipal Stadium in Wroclaw during the match against the Czech Republic, warning that more trouble could cost the team points.

UEFA opened disciplinary proceedings against the Russian federation following the trouble in Wroclaw, including throwing fireworks onto the field and displaying nationalist flags both of which happened again Tuesday.

On the field, Russia s rampant attack in the opening 4-1 win over the Czechs was largely muzzled by a well-organized Polish defense. At the other end, Robert Lewandowski was a constant threat.

Czech fans happy with victory over Greece

To the delight of their supporters in the fan zone in Wroclaw, the Czech Republic kept alive their hopes of progress at Euro 2012 with an initially scintillating but ultimately nerve-wracking 2-1 win over Greece in Group A on Tuesday.

In an enterprising but niggling clash that stirred memories of the teams dramatic 2004 semi-final, decided in Greece s favour by a silver extra time goal, Petr Jiracek and Vaclav Pilar struck in the opening six minutes for the Czechs.

But despite captain Tomas Rosicky s graceful conducting of the game from midfield against a shaky Greek defence, the Czechs failed to add a third and, following the diminutive maestro s halftime withdrawal with a heel injury, had to ride their luck in face of a spirited Greek fightback.

When substitute Fanis Gekas capitalised on an error by goalkeeper Petr Cech to pull one back in the 53rd minute, the prospect of a draw or worse loomed for the Czechs.

But they dug in, survived some torrid moments and secured a first victory over Greece in four attempts as an independent nation.

"It was a nervous match for the fans. But we did play better than last time with Russia," said one Czech fan.

"This was a tormented match. When Bilek (Czech couch) use two forwards, than it would be completely different. This is much better football also for the viewers," said another.

70 killed in Afghan quake landslide

Two shallow quakes less than half an hour apart shook the mountainous Hindu Kush region Monday, starting a slide of earth and rock that smashed into a remote village, burying mudbrick houses to a depth of up to 100 metres (300 feet).

People in the village of Mullah Jan, in Burka district, the worst-hit area in the province of Baghlan, said 71 people were trapped. An official described the chances of survival as "slim or non-existent".

Mohammad Daiem Kakar, the head of the national disaster management agency, said the landslide had moved the entire village 20 to 30 metres down the mountainside.

Two bodies have been recovered from the village and 69 others -- all women and children, as the men were out working on their farms when the disaster struck -- are still missing, Kakar said.

"According to the village elders and relatives of the victims, there were 27 boys, 24 girls and 20 women missing," he told AFP.

"The chance for anyone to survive is very very slim or non-existent. The entire village has been relocated and brought down with earth down below the mountains.

"Throughout yesterday and today there have been no sign of bodies despite digging in some parts up to 20 metres down into the earth."

A bulldozer was at work digging through the rubble at Mullah Jan, according to Rafiullah Rasoolzai, spokesman for the disaster response agency, who said emergency supplies of food, water and shelter had been brought in.

Provincial governor Munshi Abdul Majeed earlier said the sheer volume of soil made digging work very difficult.

"They might be dead as there is a lot of soil and removing this is very, very hard," he said.

"We have sent excavators to the area but I don t think they will be able to do much."

Baghlan Police chief Assadullah Shirzad said around 100 security forces were helping the search.

The first quake on Monday, with a magnitude of 5.4, struck at 9:32 am (0502 GMT) at a depth of 15 kilometres (10 miles) with the epicentre around 160 kilometres southwest of the town of Faizabad.

A more powerful tremor, measured at 5.7 magnitude, hit around 25 minutes later in almost exactly the same place, the US Geological Survey (USGS) said.

Buildings were felt shaking slightly in Kabul, around 170 kilometres to the south, during both quakes.

Northern Afghanistan and Pakistan are frequently hit by earthquakes, especially around the Hindu Kush range, which lies near the collision of the Eurasian and Indian tectonic plates.

A 7.6-magnitude earthquake in Pakistan in October 2005 killed 74,000 people and displaced 3.5 million.
