Lawyers say judiciary should not be maligned
LAHORE:
President of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) Yasin Azad called for conducting an across-the-board accountability of politicians, media persons, generals, bureaucrats and lawyers to expose those who received perks from property magnate Malik Riaz.
"The legal fraternity is with the judiciary and the chief justice of Pakistan," Azad told a press conference on Saturday.
The fraternity could not support an icon who believes in resolving every issue with money, he said, adding that the judiciary and the chief justice should not be dragged into this case of alleged corruption. By taking action against his own son Dr Arsalan Iftikhar, the chief justice has established the independence of the judiciary, Azad said, adding that the chief justice and the Supreme Court should not be penalised for the blunders of an individual.
People should not be accused on mere hearsay, he said, adding that this has become a trend in our society.
The apex court, in its verdict, endorsed the SCBA's stand that a thorough investigation should be conducted and those responsible – whether it's Malik Riaz, his son-in-law, or the chief justice's son – should be dealt with in accordance with law.
The ball is now in the court of the government and the attorney general and the legal fraternity hopes that a fair investigation would be conducted, Azad said.
The investigating officers should be selected with consensus, the investigation report should be made public, and the guilty should be tried and convicted under the law, he added.
Azad said the media, as the fourth pillar of the state, was also accused in the case and it was the duty of media persons to hold all 'black sheep' in their ranks accountable.
Aitzaz, Bokhari barred from bars
Former SCBA president and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader Aitzaz Ahsan, and Malik Riaz's counsel Zahid Bokhari, are virtual personae non gratae for Sindh's bar associations, after the groups resolved to block their entry to every bar association in the province.
Bar associations from across the province – including the Karachi and Malir Bar Associations, the Hyderabad High Court Bar Association and bar associations from districts including Naushehro Feroze, Sukkur, Khairpur, Tando Adam and Umerkot – met in Karachi on Saturday.
According to Mehmoodul Hassan, the president of the Karachi Bar Association, the bars will be organising a 'black day' on June 18 and will boycott the courts. They have also placed a bar on any lawyer working for Malik Riaz to enter a bar association in Sindh.

Tennis: Aisam, Rojer reach Halle final

Aisamul Haq Qureshi and Jean-Julien Rojer stormed into the final of the Gerry Weber Open with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Lukasz Kubot and Mikhail Youzhny in the semi-final yesterday.
In the singles event, five-time champion Roger Federer will face German Tommy Haas in the final after the two tour veterans clinched straight-sets semi-finals wins.
Federer reached the Halle final for the seventh time after a 6-1, 6-4 victory against unseeded Russian Mikhail Youzhny. Wildcard Haas, a former world number two, defeated compatriot Philipp Kohlschreiber, the quarter-final conqueror of Rafael Nadal, 7-6 (7/5), 7-5, and admitted later it was a mystery how he managed to reach the final.
“The key for me was coming back from 0-40 then holding that and going 4-1,” said Federer. “That was a big 10 minutes for me and then, once in the lead, I played a bit more aggressive and he was missing quite a few shots, making it easier for me.
“Overall, I think I played a good tough solid match, especially after yesterday’s shoot-out (against Raonic)."
Federer’s previous victories in Halle came in 2003-06 and again in 2008, while he also lost the final to Lleyton Hewitt in 2010.
Haas, the 2009 champion when he beat Djokovic, admitted he had been surprised by his run.
“It’s unexpected, it’s a bit of mystery how I got here. But I am delighted to be playing good tennis at Halle,” said Haas. The 34-year-old, who will be playing his first final since beating Djokovic at the same venue in 2009, has won just two of his 12 matches against Federer. Two of his defeats came in the Halle semi-finals in 2005 and 2006.
Cilic to face Nalbandian in Queen’s final
Former Wimbledon runner-up David Nalbandian will face Croatia’s Marin Cilic in the final at Queen’s Club after defeating Grigor Dimitrov 6-4, 6-4 in the semi-finals.
Nalbandian reached the Wimbledon final in 2002 before losing to Australia’s Lleyton Hewitt and 10 years later he is back in the final of a grass-court event for the first time since that memorable run at the All England Club. The 30-year-old Argentine, seeded 10th, drew on his vast experience to subdue rising star Dimitrov and complete a remarkable run of three wins in 48 hours.
After rain caused a fixture pile-up on Friday, Nalbandian showed impressive durability to come from a set down to win against Edouard Roger-Vasselin and then Xavier Malisse. Despite such a gruelling schedule, Nalbandian showed no signs of tiredness against Dimitrov and his reward is a first appearance in the Queen’s final and his first ATP Tour final since Auckland in January 2011.
Dimitrov’s fluid style and shot-making ability have drawn comparisons with Federer, but the 21-year-old is only just beginning to fulfill his potential. He cried tears of joy after surviving a barrage from big-serving Kevin Anderson to reach his first ATP semi-final, but this time he left the court shaking his head in frustration after a nervous display.

Perera hat trick hands Pakistan 44 run defeat in fourth ODI
COLOMBO: A hat trick from Thisara Perera handed Pakistan 44 run defeat in the fourth one day international.
The rain-hit match at Premadasa was moving in Pakistan’s favour with opener Azhar Ali and captain Misbahul Haq shared a 113 run partnership, chasing Sri Lanka’s 243 for the loss of eight wickets.
But after Haq was dismissed for 57, Pakistani batsmen found the going quite tough, and Perera too hot to handle as the team collapsed from 166 for three to 179-9.
Spinner Saeed Ajmal tried to offer support to Ali to the best of his ability. The pair added 20 more runs before Ajmal tried to lob one over mid-off and was caught by Thirimanne to bring the match to a close.
Azhar Ali remained not out, having made 81 runs.
Sangakkara had shared a 110 run partnership with captain Mahela Jayawardene, who scored 40 runs.
Off-spinners Mohammad Hafeez and Saeed Ajmal, and paceman Sohail Tanvir each bagged two wickets for Pakistan in the day-night match.
Earlier, Sri Lanka captain Mahela Jayawardene elected to bat after winning the toss against Pakistan in the fourth one-day international in Colombo on Saturday.
The five-match series is currently tied 1-1, with Pakistan winning the opening one-dayer by six wickets and Sri Lanka winning the second game by 76 runs in Pallekele.
The third match was abandoned due to rain in Colombo on Wednesday.
