'FIR against Shahbaz in case of mishap with PPP legislators in Punjab'

ISLAMABAD: Advisor to the Prime Minister on Interior Affairs Rehman Malik warned on Monday that an FIR would be registered against Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif in case of a mishap with any Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) legislator in Punjab.

Taking notice of incidents where national assets were damaged and attacks on residences of PPP legislators, he said that the Punjab government has totally failed to provide protection.

Malik added that Sharif is responsible for sponsored disorder, and instead of adopting preventive measures, he is putting the lives of political opponents at risk just to gain political mileage.

He said that it is also the responsibility of the provincial government, especially the chief minister to ensure protection to citizens but he has failed to deliver in an efficient manner.

Aisam, Rojer bag Gerry Weber Open

KARACHI: Aisamul Haq Qureshi successfully defended his Gerry Weber Open men's doubles title as the Pakistan tennis ace and his Dutch partner Jean-Julien Rojer downed Americans Americans Treat Huey and Scott Lipsky 6-3, 6-4 in Halle.

Aisam – who won last year's title with Indian Rohan Bopanna – and Rojer, the tournament's top seeds, never looked in trouble, easily dispatching off their opponents in quick time.

The win marked Aisam's second doubles title of the year after he also won the Estoril Open with Rojer in May.

'I’ve proved my critics wrong'

Aisam, who lost the French Open semi-finals partnering Rojer, was pleased with the win. "Many people thought that my win was a fluke last year," Aisam told The Pak Sar Zameen. "It's all come together and I'm very excited because it has just reaffirmed our confidence. Switching from clay to grass was difficult and I was feeling the pressure but we did well.

"This win proves that I'm good enough. Both Rojer and I have continued the momentum we started in Estoril, then to the French open and now in Halle. I'm sure I'll be able to improve my rankings by the time the US Open starts."

Meanwhile, Aisam added that his next campaign starts on Tuesday in the Netherlands, the home turf of Rojer. "He wanted to play at home and since he requested, I'm all geared up for it. It's going to be good preparation for Wimbledon."

Wildcard Haas beats Federer

In the men's singles final, Germany’s Tommy Haas recorded an upset win over second-seed Roger Federer 7-6 (7/5), 6-4 to become the ATP’s second oldest champion.

Playing in front of his home fans, the 34-year-old wildcard added to his triumph at the same venue three years ago to take his 13th ATP title.

Swiss great Federer, the second seed, was seeking a sixth win at this Wimbledon warm-up event having booked his seventh final ticket with a straight sets win over unseeded Russian Mikhail Youzhny.

Haas, a former world number two, secured his place in the climax with a defeat of compatriot Philipp Kohlschreiber.

After claiming the title, Haas said, "This has been one of the best weeks of my career, but I reckon I won’t really appreciate what’s happened until this evening.

"If someone had said to me beforehand that I was going to beat Roger Federer, probably the best player of all time, I would have thought they were mad."

Federer was magnanimous in defeat. "Tommy has performed well throughout, I’m thrilled for him," said the Swiss. (With additional input from afp)

The Delicatessen gives something new to Lahore foodies

Grab and go food culture has not really hit Pakistan. The concept of power lunches is still benign and inconsistent, and as far as Lahore is concerned, the only option most working people have is to grab a bakery sandwich from Coffee, Tea and Company or Kitchen Cuisine and, worse yet, a fast food chain. But here's the good news: a conceptualised new eatery that focuses on quick grab and go items has opened its doors. In other words, Lahore opens up its very first deli: The Delicatessen.

Amid haggling, PTI delays intra-party elections

ISLAMABAD:

Differences in Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf's (PTI) party cadres have reportedly led chairman Imran Khan to indefinitely delay intra-party elections, according to some sources.

To justify his decision, the PTI chairman has extended the party's ongoing membership campaign, without setting a clear deadline for its conclusion.

"Imran assented to the point of view of two party leaders, who had asked the PTI chief to first prepare for the general elections," said a party leader while talking to The Pak Sar Zameen.

According to sources, party president Javed Hashmi and Additional Secretary General Saifullah Niazi, as well as some influential members of the steering committee, had recommended 'putting off party elections' for now.

Earlier, Imran had dissolved all regional bodies by constituting regional steering committees in all the provinces, a move that aimed to pave way for holding party elections.

However, the party's top leadership held many meetings to resolve all outstanding issues but failed to generate an agreement to hold intra-party polls before the next general elections.

"PTI is unlikely to hold elections at the council level before the general elections," said one of the sources.

New inductees into the party, especially Sikander Hayat Bosan and Javed Hashmi, had advised Imran Khan to focus on the next general elections first.

While talking to The Pak Sar Zameen, Bosan said that he had opposed the idea of holding intra-party polls first, since that would take the focus away from the challenge of the general elections.

On the other hand, some leaders from the old guard had wanted intra-party elections to precede the general elections.

Party hierarchy

According to sources, there were serious differences among the echelons of the party leadership over the exact framework to be followed in formulating a party hierarchy as well.

Party leaders including Khursheed Mehmood Kasuri, Sardar Assef Ahmed Ali, Sikandar Bosan, Jamal Khan Leghari, Mian Azhar and Mian Mehmood Rashid had conveyed their concerns, highlighting the fact that they had not been given any party office as yet.

They had also opposed direct nomination of seven new senior vice presidents as well as a president without holding appropriate consultations.

"The decision not to hold party elections was based on the fact that the party's constitutional document is still being studied by its legal attorneys," said a senior leader, while talking to The Pak Sar Zameen.

When asked to comment, Khursheed Kasuri dismissed these differences as trivial, adding that all emerging parties undergo such challenges.

"The PTI is an emerging political party so differences are a part of the democratic cycle," he pointed out.
